My son read this book to me as part of his AR reading for school. Dixie goes to a track race with her owner, Emma. Emma tells her that she can't run the race, and that she must behave: sit, stay, cheer. Dixie follows these directions to the letter, mostly. When it's Emma's turn to run, Dixie starts howling and distracts everyone, including Emma, causing her to trip. Emma runs and picks up the baton and wins the race for her.
Such a cute and good doggy named Dixie. I really like illustrations, soft and bright watercolor. The story is about the relationship of a girl and her filial dog.
My daughter has come to love Dixie, which we have as a Nook Book and she reads it over and over again so we were delighted to get a new Dixie book in Dixie Wins the Race. I was confused at first, but then realized it is the same character but a different illustrator artist. I think both illustrations are great and I really do like this one. This specific story is a great one for dog lovers, knowing about that excited pup that just wants to help. Another great one for promoting reading with a topic of interest.
Emma is happy girl who loves to run and loves her dog, Dixie. What adventure will happen when Emma takes Dixie with her to her race? Emma told Dixie to sit, stay and cheer... but is that what Dixie has in mind?
This is a simple story which children will enjoy. It holds their interest because most students can relate to running in a race, whether at their annual school field day, or playing with friends. The book is a step 1 because of the simple sentences, but the words in the sentences are not those that are easy to read for beginning readers.
This will be a book you and your child can enjoy together.
This is a cute story, and the first time you read it, you get as antsy as Dixie. The author does a great job building the story with action and a bit of suspense, yet repeating sight words consistently enough to help readers keep going.
