Light has always been confident in his ability to out-think everyone, but L's protégés are proving to be more of a challenge than he anticipated. The more Light mentally maneuvers, the tighter the net around him becomes. And now Near and Mello are working to break the task force apart and expose Kira from within! Light has always held up under pressure in the past, but will the stress of this new line of attack and the strain of maintaining three different personalities be the beginning of his end?

Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

Ehm, I really really want Mello to point his gun at me. And I know that that's not a healthy obsession.

If it were Mello vs Kira for the win, I would be supporting Mello! And can I just say that his new look is awesome? The scar is the bomb!

I don't like Near, he is boring very childlike, and he reminds me of a monkey. I sort of expect him to scratch his head with his toes — not a fan.

I think the series is starting to drag a bit for me. I like it, but I'm not as compelled to keep reading the volumes as I was with the first 7 volumes.

I can’t help but feel like this is dragging on unnecessarily. The sense of urgency in this story has depleted. This could probably be because there is no one I actually care about now. I couldn’t care less who lives or dies. I really miss L.

I really enjoy this series, but the plot is starting to drag. It was a touch too boring and complicated for my taste. Except for the last chapter or two, this felt like a set-up for the next book; nothing much happened.

Didn't enjoy this one much, it was a little too dull and convoluted for my liking.
Light, Near, and Mello trying to outsmart each other wasn't all that entertaining, and the various notebooks/owners/rules were difficult and irritating to follow at times. Also, there wasn't enough Misa Misa, she was the most fun character in the series and she was barely in it.. Matsuda was pretty great though.
Hope the next one isn't such a dragged out mess.

TW// murder, mention of heart attacks, gun violence, suicidal ideation

Volume nine was a lot more action packed and interesting than the last several volumes in this series. There were lots of twists and the story is even more intense now because it seems that Light might be really close to being caught. I still stand by liking Near, so I’m interested in seeing if he can make it out of that cliffhanger alive.

Re-read
It's surprising that I liked it more in my second read which happened after a long time.
Tip for all readers: Never get distracted or keep a gap between two Death Note volumes. You may end up forgetting it all leading to a re-read of all the volumes.

Light, once again is battling single handedly with multiple foes here - Near, Mello, SPK and Japanese Task force. It's quite surprising how strategies run through his mind and he keeps fooling almost everyone!

However, like in my last review, the Japanese Task force should have identified Light had they been half as smart as him.

This volume again highlights on the part where the evil within Light has taken up a new form when he doesn't think twice about sacrificing his own father !

This volume is more of an appetizer to an upcoming wholesome battle between Kira and the child Prodigies - Mello & Near!

-------

Death Note isn't Death note if it doesn't end on a cliffhanger !

Kira just used the power of people to protect him from Near's suspicion and at the same time trying to subdue him.

This volume was a bit boring as compared to it's predecessor's. This volume majorly displayed Mello's power and his capabilities, all the while pinning Kira.

Unfortunately, this volume saw the end of Detective Yagami. One flaw i noticed in this volume is the way Japanese task force has been blindly trusting upon Light inspite of his lack of emotions post Detective's death.

It's getting a bit confusing now with the book changing hands and the ever increasing rules, both fake and real, gonna have to hold the seat tight!!

I preferred the plot with Ryuzaki much more, don’t know why I can’t get myself to enjoy this series anymore

Its turning out like that cryptic maze, that you entered in with so much of enthusiasm.
It was fun for a while... and now I'm feeling frustrated being lost in that maze!

Brilliant.
Better than the previous volume. The manga is more dense and intelligent than the anime. What bothered me in the anime too is that Light is not as smart as with his nemesis being Ryuzaki. His cleverness seems to have some lacking.

The scope that this Kira war took in this volume was quite entertaining. It's nice to see how much tolerance individuals can have to his judgment and how society evolves according to his agenda.

Mello's and Near's hunt for Kira's identity was also quite nice here. The strategies they use are impressive.

The worse about this volume is the death of that one character which I found much more powerful than the other series-changing death.

Yours truly,

Prince Zuko, is that you?! 🔥💥⚡

All jokes aside, Mello is my new crush thanks to this amazing fanart 😰

When did Light become so stupid? What an awful plot hole. Only two volumes ago he was this evil mastermind, now he doesn't have two brain cells to rub together.

Also, without L it just isn't the same anymore.

Likes: I liked all of these books especially the last one. I love the action and adventure to this book.

Dislikes: Also, this book again was confusing. As I said in my overall section. I just feel that this book is very forgetable.

What mood should you read this book in?: Emotional, Adventure

Pace: Fast

Likable Characters?: Light my true love

Overall, I feel that this volume and volume 7 and 10 were all mushed together and I couldn't really understand the difference.
