This was a bit darker than I was expecting it to be but it was a whirlwind of an adventure nonetheless. Right from the start, I was sucked into a vivid and magical world and I was with Cedo every step of the way on his incredible journey through it. Erus was an enigma of a man; often brutal but then in the next breath equally kind. Just when I thought I had him figured out, he would do something that would make me pause and think again. Emotionally, this was not an easy read and the cliffhanger ...more

Mars on the Rise is the epitome of the classic steampunk novel with a male/male romantic twist. It contains all the hallmarks of steampunk: steam (of course), marvelous mechanical inventions, airships—all wrapped in the standard pseudo-Victorian sensibility. It’s also a very dark and sometimes disturbing novel where the price of progress is a very high one indeed. Rae Gee’s narrative voice shines brilliantly and her descriptions of places and people are so well done that they literally leap righ ...more

DNF - I read up to 40% of this book, before putting it down for about a week. Read a few books in between, then decided to start again, and read up to 60%. Had to put my Nook down every 5 or so pages, because I just couldn't focus. I kept telling myself that I could do this. I could finish this. It's steam punk. It's dark. There's a character with an abused childhood, with a history of failed relationships with people he loved. All the things I would normally like.

So what went wrong?

I received a free copy of this for review.

This is certainly not a read for everybody, but I really liked it. This is the first steampunk novel that I have read and I found it very different than what I am used to. Its a completely different world set in Victorian times, full of fantastical machines.

This story is told from Cedo's point of view. He's a local storyteller that is discovered by the wealthy, mysterious Erus. Erus takes him in and tells him that he sees great potential in his talent.

Wonderful tale of intrigue set in a vibrant world of victoriana & 'steampunk' fabulous interpersonal relationships written so you feel as if you are in the story with them.
Such a good read I'm already reading it again!

The first Steampunk LGBT Romance I've read, and it didn't have a dull moment. Storyteller Cedo's personality gave the reader an insight into his life and Erus Veetu, the mean weapons and machines manufacturer. I thought Billy's character was a contrasting inclusion in the story.

Cedo's stories were always worth heeding. There were a lot of imaginative steampunk ideas in Mars on the Rise that highlighted oppression and technological progress. Perhaps more steampunk ideas could have been developed.

"In the depths of his dream world, the sounds rose and fell, haunting cries and screams coupled with the sounds of machinery. In the waking moments, they stayed with him, refusing to die with the night, as cold and clear as the night-time air". - Mars on the Rise

Mars on the Rise is the first book in the Veetu Industries series by Rae Gee. In this story we are introduced to Erus Veetu and Cedo Reilly, two very different characters, and their dark and violent steampunk world. Erus picks Cedo off t

3.5 really. I love what Mars on the Rise is trying to do. (view spoiler) is pretty classic stuff. Gee's description of the environment is such that the reader is easily able to imagine it. The characters of Cedo and Billy are fairly well rounded, though Cedo does seem so innocent that you wonder how he even survived at all. Erus' character isn't as clear, but s ...more

What is it with the odious MCs this week? I mean, really, isn't there such a thing as a good guy any more??

This book has good points. It is never boring; the prose is atmospheric and graceful, with imaginative and often disturbing imagery; and the characters, however incomprehensible they may be, aren't cardboard.

BUT --

The MC Erus is absolutely despicable. He is a mass murderer and torturer and experimenter on humans, he beats the other MC, Cedo, to within an inch of his life on several occasio

A friend sent me this book to read as she knows the author and so I wasn't sure what to expect.

There were some aspects of the book that I enjoyed. The story idea was sound and interesting and it has great potential as a continuing series.

What fell short for me was some of the character development as there is little justification for Cedo's sudden love for Erus and that made it hard to accept his decisions as the book progressed.

Still, the writing was strong and I think there is room to develop

Erus Veetu, the cold-heart, the enigmatic ...

I lost myself with great delight in the labyrinth of Rae Gee's extraordinarily dark, twisted and fertile imagination ...
