Sam #1

One of those sweet and at the same time, sad stories about a dog and the family who take him in. A dog finds Kix and his sister Emelia. Of course, they invite him into their lives only to find out he has an owner. Will they be forced to return him?
Fans of Shiloh or books by Patricia MacLachlan should like it.

van de Vendel, Edward A Dog Like Sam. 111 pages. CHAPTER BOOK. Illustrated by Philip Hopman. Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, 2016. $13.00. Content: Language: G Mature Content: PG (cigarettes and guns) Violence: G (although there are guns, they are not used)

A big white dog wanders into the yard while Kix and Emilia are playing. Although they discover that the dog belongs to their neighbors, it keeps coming back to their house. Kix’s family feeds and plays with the dog and names him Sam. From his scrawniness and cautious personality they conclude that he’s had a rough life. They also learn that Sam makes a great watchdog and loves having his fur brushed. All is well until their neighbor’s son returns and wants his dog.

Translated from Dutch, this book is based on true events. It consists of short chapters with simple illustrations. It is a heartwarming story that will appeal to any animal lover.

Meile meeldis. :)

Good book about dog loving kids who help learn about all the emotions of loving a dog that isn't really there dog but loves them as well as his actual owner. Could be a good discussion book for kids.

Ontroerend.

Kix and his sister Emilia are playing quietly outside one day, when they spot a large white dog in their yard. Over the next few days and weeks, the dog becomes part of the family. Where did the dog come from? Why did it choose them? Should they keep it? Those questions are all answered, and they are all related to the unfriendly neighbor and his mentally ill son. There is some discussion of mental illness, and the young children use some terms that might not be preferred by those involved with mental illness, but those instances are used by the parents as teachable moments and insensitivities are corrected. A touching story, with examples of different types of families, but with the dog as the driving force not only of the story but of the choices the human characters make. Recommended for readers who like stories about animals and families. Gr. 4-7

A Dutch book for kids of appr. 8 and older. I saw the author at the library, when I received him and some groups of children from school who came by to see and hear him. The author told an exciting story about his trip to family in Canada. When he was there a large white dog appeared on the farm of his family. Though he wagged his tail, he was afraid to come near them. The only way to approach him was to get down to his level. That way he would come close and allow people to stroke him. Preferably all day long... Who was this dog, where did he come from? Would he stay? It certainly looked that way. He even attacked a dog that trespassed, convincing the Dad in the family that this was a dog worth keeping, since he had demonstrated he would defend each and every member of the family, human and animal.

The author made a book about this and the dramatic events that followed. Though slightly altering some things, like making the main character a little younger. After hearing the author talk I just had to read the book and it was certainly worthwhile!

A Dog Like Sam is a very beautifully written book and I am sure any young reader who loves dogs will love this book. At first I was hesitant because I was worried it might be a sad book like Where the Red Fern Grows or Old Yeller, you just never know with books about dogs. It took me awhile to read it because the more you read of the story the more it seems like something bad is about to happen. When I was 12 years old a dog appeared at my bus stop and when I got home that afternoon he was still there. I got lucky and my birthday was coming up so I was able to convince my mom to let me keep him. I had Bailey for 14 years and he was the best friend I needed during all those awkward growing up years. I was able to identify with the children in the book very easily. I feel even if a child reading this book hasn't been through a situation like this they will still be able to easily identify with the characters.
The illustrations for the book are very well done. There are a few that are a little creepy which I think fits perfectly with the story. It does have some sad and difficult situations that arise in the book but they are handled well and work out to have a really great ending.
I think my favorite part of the book would be the note from the author at the end. It gives background to the book that makes the story even better! I really hope they keep it at the end because I feel it is more powerful at the end. If they put it at the beginning I just don't think it would have the same effect.
Thank you Eerdman Books for the ARC of this book. I really enjoyed reading it!

This is a great children's chapter book to read to kids at night. The chapters are really short (like 1-2 page on average). It's got a good story, and there is actually character development in the main character! It is also based on a true story that actually happened to the author. I originally picked this book up because I like dogs, but this is not bad for adults either.
Very cute story about a white dog who visited a home and decided that he belongs to them now. What about the original owner of the dog? What if he came back for him? Read and find out!

Heerlijk.
