Caroline Hanson grew up in California and moved to London in order to dance and go to pubs. Eventually, she matured enough to marry and imported an Englishman, returning to the United States.

After passing the bar, she had two children and now tries to parent, read, write and play tennis. She's heard rumors that other mothers clean and cook but is putting in serious effort to make sure those rumors don't reach her family.

Caroline grew up listening to Brit pop and reading about vampires. As a teenager her favorite authors were Anne Rice and Jude Deveraux. Now she loves Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Laura Kinsale, Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, Nalini Singh and JR Ward-- that's the short list.

She is also the proud owner of a WWJD t-shirt, (What Would Joss do?) which she hopes is apparent in her books.

She loves to hear from fans and her second book in the Valerie Dearborn Series, Love is Fear, will be published in December 2011.

A free short story called Bewitching the Werewolf was released in September on Smashwords.

The third and final book in a series is often hit and misses. I guess it would be hard for an author to keep everyone happy. The overall story worked for me, I liked the outcome, I liked the twists and turns it took, and I liked seeing different sides to people, that you can be both good and bad. It was really interesting to read, and I liked the whole plot. I was invested in the characters, and was eager to get my happy ever after. However, when I finished it I was disappointed as it was not everything I hoped for. For me the reason that this book was not everything I hoped for is simple. Lucas at times felt like a different character, Valerie lost some of her spunk, the Jack and Rachel relationship is a bit odd, where was the sex and is there a chapter missing? Now let me explain these a little better without giving too much away. Lucas is being held by Cer, so I understand how he cannot be this all mighty tough vamp, but he turns instead into overly sweet Lucas, who old Valerie could have walked over. I wanted him to be tougher and rougher, sure it was nice seeing him sweet, and finding out more of his past, but I felt he needed to take control at times. Valerie is also with Cer, he wants her to be queen, she wants to escape, but is torn between just getting out and saving Lucas too. In addition Valerie also has to contend with Virginia the true Fey queen. So yes I want her to save Lucas, but she just gives up too easily to Virginia, I wanted more of a struggle, and I would have liked for her to save herself from Virginia rather than needing so much from Lucas. However, her character does get that spunk back at the end so maybe i should forgive the rest. The whole Jack and Rachel relationship was odd for me. I never felt anything from them in the previous books so it just felt weird. And finally the sex, ok, the previous books have had some pretty impressive scenes between Valerie and Lucas, and this book, nothing, and there was room for it. I missed it, and I missed the heat between them.

The actual ending was also a little strange for me, sure we get the happy ever after, and a set up for a follow on series with the other characters in an epilogue but the jump that happens from the actual final chapter to the epilogue made me feel like the book was missing a whole chapter.

If you have read the previous books in this series, you will want to read this book to find out what happens to everyone. I hope that you are one of the readers that the author has been able to keep happy.
Will I read it again? No

I loved it, but not as much as the first two books. It confused me a little and made me laugh and cry at the same time like some emotional lunatic. I think I should have re-read the first two books before reading this one because it had been such a long time since I read book 2, I needed a refresher.

WARNING THIS IS SPOILERISH:

Lucas is shackled in a Fae King's dungeon; Valerie, deperately in need of an exorcism, is possessed by dead Fae Queen Virginia; Jack is a werewolf and bound to Rachel, a vampire. The supernatural shit has hit the fan and Lucas has all but given himself up on a silver platter to his arch enemy, Cerdewellyn. The fae bitch, Virginia a/k/a Linda Blair, I mean Valerie, has been carving up and torturing Lucas. Meanwhile the real Valerie is stuck inside her own head teaching history and going miniature golfing and on other "human" dates with Lucas. Rachel and Jack are trying to find the Sard.

Eventually, Valerie wakes up from her "normal" life inside her head, gets her mojo back, saves her man and fights really hard for that happily ever after.

**spoiler..maybe** wow.Although this book was great...I feel a little cheated. This is one of my favorite series, but I feel the ending did not go with the series or the characters.I feel they could of had a happy ending, but the way it turned out made me feel .....blah, I guess. One of the reasons why I loved Lucas was because of his hard edge, but knowing he really felt something deep down. Also I don't like what was taken away at the end.I guess you could say the ending was too good to be true for this series. It was a' fizzled out 'ending.I wanted a happy ending, but not like this.I still loved the book for the most part and I will definetly read the others in the series, but I'm a little sad right now.It still hasn't changed as one of my favorite series, but I wish Lucas and Val would have stayed the same.

For some reason, this book was felt short for me. Maybe I really, really wanted more of Valerie and Lucas, and why not even Jack!

I thought something was missing in the story, maybe that strong connection between the main characters, or that everything ended so fast...I don't know I guess I was expecting more.

Anyhow, the book was good (not as good as the other two in my opinion, but still good).
:)

ok. so I really really do not like Valerie at all. I want to slap her in the face and almost believe she should be alone forever with her own self righteous attitude. I mead its ok for jack to try to kill him in a moment when it actually matters, but because he defended himself he is the jerk. whatever no one on this planet including her would have let that go with out hurting him. I still love Lucas, but I do not like her at all.

While I really enjoyed this final installment in the Valerie Dearborn series, I have to say that it wasn't my personal favorite. The middle third of this book was extremely dark, and while I understand why from a plot development standpoint, it didn't make that portion of my reading experience pleasurable. And I would have personally loved more info at the end.

Either I read this one much too quickly, or it was much too short. Guess I'll just have to reread it. I was counting down the days for it's release and I'm not ready for it to be over.

Can't wait to see what Hanson has in store for the future!

I really enjoyed this trilogy and finished all books in 2 days (don't judge me, my eyes hurt!) The author leaves you with one hell of a cliff hanger at the end of the first two books, and I stayed curled up on my couch like an addict jonesin' to know what happens with all the characters.
Jack... oh poor, confused Jack. He was really one of my favorite characters, although I was never rooting for him and Valerie to end up together. I didn't like him in the first book, thought he was quite the d-bag, but boy did he grow on me. I saw that there is a novella the author wrote giving a little more background to Jack, and I can't wait to read it.
And then there's Lucas. The ultimate bad boy/ anti-hero type that ends up not being so terrible. I liked how much backstory we got on him in this third installment and your heart starts to break for the guy. I don't blame him for not wanting all the emotions, who would want to remember 1600 years of awfulness?
Valerie was a great heroine I thought. There were times I wanted to reach my hand through the page and slap her when she would start getting a little too whiny/self indulgent, and then there were times where I wanted to shake because she was taking too much shit from one of her boys.
Okay, so now why I only gave it 4 stars when I gave the first two 5.
I didn't like the ending. I felt a little let down and fell asleep thinking of all the other ways I wished it had gone, which was just tiring! I feel like I was so invested in these characters and their stories, and it was just like plllp(mouth fart noise). Done. I think it's set up for another series to start from it focusing on the new character Molly, but I wanted the ending now. And the ending we are given... just no. I'm all for the redemption/ bad guy turned good, but c'mon. I feel like so many of the characters were just stripped down into completely different people, and then it was over. No explanation, no look into their new lives, nothing. *le sigh*
Also, TONS of typos (at least in my Kindle version). It was almost confusing at times because of misplaced and missing quotations as well as missing or incorrect words used (ex. it said "the" a few times when it should have been "her/him" and just little things like that. Not huge, but had to re-read to make sure I understood). That's more of an editing thing though, and it doesn't really bother me, so I didn't take that into account for my review, but I'm sure it will drive others crazy.
All in all, what a great, entertaining series to read. Thank you Caroline Hanson for putting a free version of the first Valerie Dearborn novel on Amazon for Kindle. I'm very happy to have been introduced to your books and am definitely looking forward to reading more of your work.

I seriously can not come up with another adjective to describe what I believe is the final book in this series. I have loved this series since book one and was so disparate to get my hands on this book. It felt like I waited forever for it to be released. I was seriously worse than a kid waiting for their birthday. I had absolutely no idea that this book would blow the others out of the water. I can not remember a time when I have been so impressed by a concluding book. I have read almost 300 books this year and this is most definitely in the top 5. I know there is no way I can do this book justice, but here are some of the things I loved about this book:
*We finally get in Lucus's mind. I will not give spoilers away, but I can tell you the author really created a very deep character and discovering who he was was simply magical.
*This is dangerously close to a spoiler, but here goes. The scenes between Valerie and Lucas when... Never mind I can not figure out how to say it without giving it away. Let me just say there are some very revealing moments between the two that really brought the story full circle.
*The book takes place where the other book ended. The author does not spend half the book retelling the whole series. This is just a continuation of this amazing tale.
*I could not put this book down. I had to find out what was going to happen next both in their thoughts and in the plot. I actually am planning to reread the whole series because it was just that good.
*Caroline does not write vampires that are men with a special diet. She understand the hardcore evilness of their nature and really plays on that darkness. In fact her exploration of what is good and what is evil is fascinating.
In a nut shell:
If you have read this series, you need to read this one. You will be floored in an awesome way. If you have not read this series and love paranormal reads with some darkness, I suggest starting with Love is Darkness. This book is not intended for those under 18.

***THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER FREE***

Let me start off by saying that I effing loved this book!! I have been a huge fan of the series since the very first book. I read Love is Mortal not knowing that it was the last book in this series, so I was really blown away when I got to the end and realized this was it. I stood staring at the last page for at least five minutes. But after I got over my shock and let everything that had transpired in Love is Mortal sink in, I sighed and smiled because this book is really a great closing book.

I will admit that even at the end of Love is Fear (book 2) I still maintained hope for my Jack. Lol! I hoped that he’d get over whatever draw he had towards Rachel and steal Val back. I was a diehard team Jack. Not that I didn’t like Lucas, but I just completely loooooved Jack. Love is Mortal completely changed my feelings for Lucas.

“He wanted to warm himself by the fire of her soul.” – Lucas speaking about Valerie.

I fucking love that quote. I had to stop and catch my breath when I read it.

Halfway through LIM, I started to really see Lucas, to understand him and yes, even hope for a HEA with Valerie. I still love Jack but seeing into Luca’s world, I saw him in a completely different light…and I loved what I saw. Love is Mortal was a hard book for me to read. Being attached to the characters and watching them go through difficult situations was not fun. This book broke my heart, but then mended it again. It made me laugh (a lot) with its humor and it made me hungry to know more on Cer and his world.

Although I am sad that this series has ended, I see a lot of open windows for future stories that I cannot wait to read. Caroline Hanson did an amazing job at writing Valerie Dearborn and the rest of the characters an exciting, but difficult journey with an amazing ending.

I gave Love is Mortal by Caroline Hanson 5 stars.

We catch up with Valerie while Cerdwellyn is busy trying to coerce her into becoming his queen and he is refusing to take no for an answer. Valerie is a lot more conflicted in this series dealing with being betrayed by Lucas and Jack so her love life is in tatters and she is wishing that she was just a normal woman without all the vampires, werewolves and Fey constantly trying to ensnare her in their world. Plenty of action and Lucas seeks redemption by offering himself up on a platter to the Fey King for his past transgressions. Taking ownership of her choices and feelings will lead her down a dangerous path that once traveled, she may not survive but it will take all of her strength to fight for what she believes in before it is too late.

I was a little anxious reading this book due to the conflicted reviews about the ending and unfortunately I do have to agree with them. I am a huge fan of the series and the ending felt like it was stilted as there was no real explanation or flow for the way the events unfolded. It is almost like you need a disclaimer in the book going "2 years later" and then a summary of the ending. I do understand that there is a certain pressure to end the series well and it is sometimes to the detriment of the series when the author bends to pressure whether internalized or external to please the masses but I do feel that it lost the perspective we had all enjoyed in the previous novels. Having said that I would recommend this series as I have loved the roller coast ride and it is sad that it has ended.

3.5

The conclusion of this trilogy was a bit lackluster. I was wanting more. There is a lot of crazy stuff going on, what with dealing with the Fey. What is real? What is illusion? Sometimes as the reader I couldn't even tell. Then there were a few other parts that just were eh and boring. I wasn't sure why we had those parts I'm not sure. The ending was rushed. And then there was the epilogue which ill used to more stories set in this world and I checked the authors goodreads page and have yet to see those stories/books. I was very interested in them. In the long run the series is interesting, engaging and sucks you in. You aren't sure where it's going to go either.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series ... even though I have hated some of these characters at times. What I enjoyed most was the darkness and chaos in these books. This third book in the series did seem to have a different type of chaos. It seemed to lack the depth of the other books, maybe ... Anyways, it is the chaos that kept me on the edge of my seat through all of these books. I was not expecting a happy ending, since none of the other books really ended that way. But I was pleasantly surprised and thought this book as well as the prior two (and Love Is The Beginning) were all excellent reads.

Love is Mortal is the final book in Caroline's Valerie Dearborn trilogy. She took the book in an entirely different direction than I would have expected. For that reason, I will not be including a recap of the story. I don't want to spoil it for other fans of the series.

For me, the best parts of the book were the most painful for the characters. This was not because I wished them harm or enjoyed seeing them in pain. But, it did give us more much needed insight into their lives. Actually, while nothing like I'd anticipated, Caroline managed to give me exactly what I was hoping for in a unique manner.

I was so disappointed in the ending of this book. I won't get into details because I would hate to ruin it for someone, but basically my problem with the ending is that the author gave the main character what she wanted, not what she needed. I absolutely was a huge fan of the previous books, including this one up until the last chapter.
I feel just so disappointed with it, and I feel extra horrible for giving a bad review of something just because of one chapter. I am still a huge fan of the series and I really do highly recommend it. I'm sure that some people will be fans of the ending, but I personally was highly disappointed.

Ignore the publication date.. this book is out now on Amazon.

This was a fantastic end to the gothic paranormal meets chicklit weirdness that was the Valerie Dearborn trilogy. I have no idea why these books aren't chattered about on Goodreads along with other indie gems like Easy and From Rags, as they deliver the same freshness and plain and simple readability shared by the best reads.

Give them a chance!!!!

This is a really good, really creative book. My favorite parts were the Vanilla Sky-esque things. I'm happy with the ending, but tend to be a pro-supernatural reader, so maybe I would have preferred something else. Valerie has her hilarious moments and it was nice that the reason for Lucas being so evil in the past is revealed. The author promises a spin-off series which I look forward to.

So Valerie redeemed herself in this one, she grew into her own person. And Lucas finally learned to open up...

The ending was not something I saw coming, so that was a first for me in paranormal fiction. The jump from the last chapter to the epilogue was abrupt and this book could have used more Valerie/Lucas time.

Overall I liked this series.

Meh. Not sure what happened because I really enjoyed book one. The characters didn't ring true to me, and they totally seemed drastically different to me in a way that seemed more then just a natural evolution. One of my stars is for the reference to "The Princess Bride". I know...right?

I reaaally wanted to love the end of this trilogy but it was just kind of all over the place and I'm left feelling like WTH just happened? The ending seemed really rushed and i felt like the novel didn't give the characters the closure they needed also there were a couple of continuity mistakes which I felf should have been picked up - Valerie stabs a character but later on says she bashed their head in which is it? there was no head bashing mentioned at the time.

Finally the last chapter of the book feels like there is a chunk missing theres a final battle then we skip forward 2 years for a very brief glance at our characters lives now. Hell no I want to know how it all went down!

Twists!!! So many that I wondered over and over 'this is how it ends?' Alas, I can say that the fine line of Alpha Male dominance and emotional but strong heroine was masterly tightrope with this series. I loved the series and thought it was slick how the series can be continued on a more 'up to date' level, if you will. I especially loved the complexity of the characters and the reasoning behind the existence of the magical world. Hanson made it difficult to choose one person to be the victor. They all had suffered, they all reacted to that suffering in their own way and in the end, it was all because of love that anything happened at all. The symbolism and detail was fantastic.

If I can say anything negative at all was, and it may be because I missed it, I am confused by Lucas' beginning and what actually happened to his family. Also, what brought Marion and Lucas together that he love Margaret.

Super Supernatural Romance

Valerie did it. She fell in love with a vampire, Lucas. Because Valerie is an empath she can feel emotions more than others. Because of prior wounds Lucas and Valerie have exchanged blood giving them a bond where they can understand each other emotionally at times. Lucas has decided that he wants to bring other supernaturals back to impose order back to the Vampire covenant. This decision stirs up a lot of crap. It just goes to show that even this author believes when things seem to be falling into place we usually are our worst enemies.

Valerie Dearborn Series

I finished this book two days ago. I have been trying to decide what to say about it. I have read all three books in this series and the only thing I can think is that I did not like it...at all!! First of all I M highly resistant to published works with bad grammar. There is simply no excuse for this.... one....EVER. second, the story line was so predictable. You know, one can live with that, but this story did not have drama, it had chaos. I am going to stop here. I read three books. I wanted to like it.

This episode in the "Valerie Dearborn" series was non-stop action and adventure. Valerie and Lucas' struggles were constantly in emotional and physical distress as they battled through detritus from their pasts. I was kept off balance as the plot constantly and unexpectedly veered into different directions. This was an outstanding story and Val and Lucas were both engaging characters that I won't forget soon. Thanks for such a wonderful adventurous tale with just the right amount of mythical fantasy. Great! Great! Read!!!!! :)

So does that ending mean there are going to be more books in the near future? Because Molly seemed pretty pissed off but seeing as she never got to use her powers for evil why is she so evilish? (okay I know evilish is not a word but if you got to the end you know what I mean that girl is freaking NUTS). Caroline I cried so hard when he gave her his memories on how he has "hurt" those he has loved dang that was a heartbreaker. So more books right?

better than Book 2, only stuck around for the ending

The series was TOUGH to get through. This book was slightly better with a more thoroughly thought out plot, less excessive intimate moments (including it is one thing, having it be the primary focus of a book is another), and a better sense of story redeemed this book slightly. I can’t say I’ll search out more Caroline Hanson books but it definitely ranks higher than the books featured on the the social media book apps.

After reading all three books I liked the storyline behind these books and loved the main characters. Lucas and Valerie are good together.
But the writing was very rough in general, the transition hard to follow occasionally and too many things left untold or just skipped. In my opinion the author needs to slow down and develop her plot and smooth out the rough edges between the scenes.
