Quinlan's first collection of poems is striking for its inventive imagery and sonorous sounds. Of the 32 poems included, a third are bound in the sea where drowning is a way of life, whether in water or voices or words or doubt. These are among my favorite poems because Quinlan has a way of combining sound and sense that lulls you into a poem and keeps you there. A brief example from the sonnet "Do Not Go East":

And dark is where the dreams are; past things, too:
the place we see ourselves unselve
