In this practical guidebook, today's most innovative garden designer shows us how to take a fresh look at how we use our gardens and encourages us to choose the kind of styles that we find appealing. Then, ten, easy-to-follow stages explain the basics of good design, from assessing the plot and considering its shape and situation, to using plants to achieve particular styles and effects.
This is a great book for beginners, especially those who have not quite decided what kind of a garden they would like. With lots of photographs, Diarmuid Gavin leads you through making choices about what you need and what style you like. While many of the photos show lots of expensive hardscape and mature plantings, this is still a great book for visualizing where you want your garden to be in 10 years. I loved his suggestion on using photographs to sketch ideas on as well as his suggestions for various shaped yards (long and thin, wide, corner, etc.). Unlike many garden design books, he does not shy away from pets and children who are both critical considerations in garden design and plant selection.
