I think it is really good and illustrates reality for many families. Before this book, I read the book before 'The Mum Hunt' so it was really nice to read this straight after the other one. Esmie is a lovely little girl and all she wants to do is help except it does not always go to plan. However, when Lizzie joins the family she finally has someone to tell her problems too.

Aug 5,2023 ( done reading at a hotel fujrah, it took me 4-5 days i was really busy)

Based on the title, I thought the mom is the defective, but the book is about investigating missing mom and her suspicions to-be stepmom.

I like this book it’s easy to read , I also like Esmie she’s really snoopy in everyones business, she is very curious and honest and also likes to confront with no hesitation, Like asking if Lizzie is having a baby when she saw her belly (but shes just fat) , or if she’s having another boyfriend (but shes just going to her therapist) . She also asks about her whereabouts . Lizzie is a wonderful person who cares alot about Esmie but she has so much patient with her. I would have been so mad at Esmie for being so nosey in my business . Esmies friend Holly is so annoying giving false hope to Esmie about Lizzie having an affair but she’s also trying to help out which is good.
I just wish we know what happened to Jennifers mom . Iwas patiently anticipating if she ever get found , but at the end they only managed to contact Jennifers aunt…

Summary: Esmie is a thirteen year old girl who has a brother who is sixteen names Matthew , Mathew has a girlfriend named Jennifer, Jennifer had a fight with her dad because her mother separated from her dad when she was younger, and now Jennifer is looking for her mother with the help of Mathew. Esmie snoops along. Since Esmies dad is a detective, she also pretends to be one, to look for clues.

Mathew got into an accident and in trouble, because he went to Jennifers house to help her look for clues for any information about her mother, but he fell down from the loft and Jennifers father caught them snooping a round. Jennifers father wants Mathew to stop going out with Jennifer, so he wrote a letter to Mathews dad.

Jennifer had a letter from her mom, but when Esmie examine the letter she recognized the handwriting is similar to the one that is send from Jennifers dad (The one that is written for Esmie dad to tell him not to have Mathew hangout with Jennifer) once Jennifer knows the truth she got really upset she went to live with Mathew. But when Esmie overheard her dad in the car that theres a murder in the allotment (the body description is similar to Jennifers mom, a broken arm) Esmie assumes that Jennifers mother was murdered by Jennifer dad, Esmie went and told Jennifer , Jennifer got scared and run away with Mathew.

Meanwhile , Esmie remembered that Jennifer told her that she has an auntie named Helen who studied at a university to became a doctor . Esmie went to the library and looked for the medical register .Since there’s multiple Helens , Esmie wrote the same letter to multiple Helen to contact back if they know Jennifer. Later on Esmie got a call from the real aunt Helen telling her to let Jennifer to call back . Esmie told Mathew and this persuaded Jennifer and Mathew to get back home, Esmies dad also persuaded them to stay , by planning to invite Jennifers dad to come over to tell Jennifer why he wrote the letter ,Jennifers dad wrote the letter because he didn’t want Jennifer to leave him.
Jennifer said she would go back to her home, and will continue to contact Helen.
Lizze(to be step mom/dad’s girlfriend ): During that time, Esmie thought Lizze is having an affair with a man named Andrew, Esmie followed her to the bus in disguise and saw her going to his house. Esmie told her dad about it, and Lizze told the truth that she went to therapist named Andrew. She couldn’t tell her dad because her dad would be weird to tell a complete stranger all your personal struggle instead of someone you will marry.
Lizzie is going to therapist because she is unsure to marry her dad because her dad is not ready to have another child, since her dad doesn’t like to go all over the baby nappy and crying cycle again.
Later on Lizzie will start living together and will start to work on there relationship from there, they also adopted a cat to take care off.

I like this book because Esmie's brother and his girlfriend had ran away from home and his girlfriend yelling at her dad that she was not his proprotey and that it was not the Middle Ages.

This was fine. I liked the detective aspects, but Juliette and her fun French accent only had a couple of brief appearances. This book wasn't quite as fun as the first.
