Catty Jane Who Hated the Rain

Rate this book
Catty Jane hates the rain, A LOT. But her spirited friends love almost everything about it. Piggy frolics through the rain in her designer boots, twirling a matching umbrella. Froggy speaks poetically of the droplets' effect on the river's surface. And Goose splashes through the storm with verve and gusto. Can Catty Jane's friends help her overcome her aversion? In this satisfying story about friendship, Catty Jane learns a thing or two about having fun.

Grades Pre-K to 1. Cats hate rain and Catty Jane is no exception. It's a rainy day and she is in a grumpy mood until her rain-loving friends come over to her house for a rainy day party complete with cookies, music and "dancing." Catty Jane hates the rain, but perhaps she'll enjoy it just a little bit more.

Catty Jane can not stand the rain. Her mother tries everything to take her mind off the storm outside and Catty Jane responds with a "No, Thank You" to each attempt. Her friends, that are too good for her, come and do everything to cheer her up. They finally succeed but at that point as a reader you are wishing they hadn't tried, her negative attitude made her an unlikeable character.

Friends can help us to learn and grow. That's the main point of this story, at least to me.

Sure, Catty Jane hates the rain... until she makes friends who broaden her perspective.

This vividly told tale is also illustrated with vivid-and-adorb illustrations.

FIVE STARS for the man who has given us both words and pictures, Valerie Gorbachev!

Catty Jane didn't like anything about the rain. She hated getting wet, she hated the overcast and cloudy skies, she hated the thunder and lighting. When her friends, Pig, Goose, and Frog visit her on a rainy stormy day, they convince Catty Jane, that there is fun to be had inside during a storm.

When rain threatens to spoil Catty Jane's day, her friends come to the rescue. One by one, Piggy, Froggy, and Goose extol the pleasures of walking in the rain and enjoying the rain that falls. But their feline friend remains unconvinced until they have a rainy-day party that brings the delights of a rainstorm indoors. The book's positive message and the gentle reassurances from Catty Jane's friends and mother are sure to alleviate the fears of some young readers when storms occur. I liked the positive message about risk-taking too. The watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations highlight the animals' zest for life and embrace of the wet weather. Clearly, the author/illustrator has spend more than a few moments walking in the rain.

I loved Gorbachev's illustrations as I always do, although the colour palette was less subtle and sophisticated than it sometimes is, and I felt that the end of the book fell a little flat, or ended too abruptly without a full resolution.

This is a cute story to share with students on a rainy day. Catty Jane is not a fan of the rain, but her friends help to show her how to have fun still. We can also discuss the rhyming of Jane and Rain as well as search for other rhyming words in the story.

Catty Jane is very unhappy about the rain. Her friends show her that there is plenty to love about a rainy day.
