I remember this book fondly from reading a copy from the school library some 22 years ago, and now that I at long last have a copy of my own, I found that it held up well.

Asimov entertainingly narrates in 18 chapters the history of Greece from the Mycenean Age (i.e., Bronze Age)--though a brief mention of the still-earlier Minoan Period is made--down to the present at the time of publication (1964). The book, as one might expect and possibly desire, is heavily weighted towards coverage of classi

Wonderfully readable, and given Asimov's quite humanistic worldview, still tremendously insightful.

One of the 500+ reasons to be awed by the knowledge of Isaac Asimov that cuts across all disciplines.

The title is justified by the book, as the reader is never left unmoved by this adventure ride that spans thousands of years - from the Bronze age Mycenaean era to the current crisis in Cyprus. Of course, the sheer number and variety of characters in this saga is difficult to keep track at times. But the splendid and passionate narration of Asimov helps one to make the necessary linkages and to

Yes, it would be nice to have listed sources but I'm not going to really hold that against Isaac. The book goes through the entire history of Greece up until 1964 when the book was written with the greatest portion dedicated to ancient Greece. Not being up on my Greek history this book was a great way to start and set a foundation to build on if I want to delve a bit deeper. It's fascinating with how much we owe to the Greeks. I also had just finished reading the book on the Crusades which were ...more

The Good Doctor presents the history of Greece, the birthplace of Western Civilization, from 3,000 B.C. to modern day Greece's disputes with Turkey in 1964; delivering it with his usual inimitably lucid and witty style. This is another one of the Good Doctor's many enjoyable and informative narratives covering the history of civilization.

They each share his entertaining style and reveal his appreciation of the sweep of grand events, as well as his enthusiasm for the intimate and obscure details

I have listened to the audiobook version a couple of times - and keep going back.
Some quarters have judged the book superficial in its treatment of the various periods and key characters, but it is really meant to be no more than an introduction to the world of ancient Greece.
Asimov goes out of his way to make connections between events, characters, technology, culture, as well as explain the meaning of quite a range of Greek words - e.g. Plato's academy was so named because a grove near the pla

Excellent history of Greece from 3000 BC until 1965 (Just before Greece and Turkey sent troops to Cyprus).

Fascinating. Ties all of western history together very well, and highlights the contributions that the ancient Greeks made to modern thought.

Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Alexander, Hannibal, Skippio, Tamerlane, Caesar... Athens, Sparta, Rome, Byzantium, Alexandria. All tied together in one great story.

I've read the pieces of the puzzle, but hadn't seen how it all fits together.

Can't wait to s

This book is a narative survey of Greek History stretching back from the ancient Minoan Civilization to present day Greece. The focus of the book is predominantely on Pre-Roman Greece; nevertheless, it was a pretty encompassing attempt at describing the full history of Greece. For anyone interested in learning about Greek History this book would be a pretty good introduction to it. It does not go into great depth, but Asimov provides a sweeping narative that gives the reader a broad understandin ...more

I was skeptical that the history of the Greeks was really going to be "A Great Adventure", but I was pleasantly surprised. Since Asimov is not encumbered by the scruples of an academic historian, he feels free to editorialize and speculate as tells the story of the ancient greeks. The result is a much more engaging book that anything I've read previously on the Greeks.

Before I read this, I barely knew anything about Ancient Greece. It's a very good introduction to it, and it shows how it barely scratches the surface. Made me more interested in the subject, which is what a good introductory book should do! You've done it again, Mr. Asimov.

Asimov is a great writer, and makes it easy to read. Yet this book is 46 years outdated and the dates falling short durng human time line. Its like a bible that says there was 5000 years of history of our planet.

This is a rather straightforward account of the many ups and downs of the Greek peoples since the dawn of their civilization (of our civilization?) to the time Isaac Asimov wrote this book (ca. 1963).

If you’re looking for an overview of that long history, this book probably fits your bill. Given the scope of the subject matter and the inherent complexity of all the events, characters, and developments of such long history, Asimov makes a great job in keeping the narrative streamlined and cohere
