Something to Howl About

Something to Howl About takes the story of Little Red Riding Hood to a new level. Granny has been hiding a secret from her granddaughter, Red. She has been keeping this secret to protect her life and the people around her. Red has been a rebel in her youth but now that she is heading toward middle-age, she is looking to redeem her ways and find a better boyfriend who isn’t boring but still is a good man.
Something to Howl About is a perfect easy read for someone who loves werewolves and stories that are twists on older stories. I found it to be a fun read filled with characters that I’d enjoy being friends with. There is no drama or a lot of steamy sex in this story, just a basic love story. Red seems like so many young women these days who have grown up and are looking for that special someone. Granny is a level-headed woman who clearly loves her family and will do anything to protect them. When I was reading Something to Howl About, I pictured the grandma from The Beveryly Hillbillies as granny. She was obviously someone who could care for herself and not get into trouble…at least not of her own making.
If you enjoy short fun reads filled with werewolves and a simple love story, you are going to love Something To Howl About. It will certainly make you think differently about grandmas!

This is a short retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, with shifters. In this version, Red rides a motorcycle and visits her Granny, who has taken care of her since her parents died. She never has guessed anything was different about Granny until she is having a terrible day and goes over to Granny’s without calling first. When she gets there, she is startled to find a big animal heading out the back door and no Granny in sight. Lo and behold, it turns out beloved Granny is, yes, a wolf shifter. When Granny realizes there is an interloper onto her territory, the fur flies. Well, twice actually, one good one, one not so nice one. The good one, Lee, is the one for Red. Well, maybe.
There are some funny lines in the story, such as when Red decides that the beautiful Lee is about to give her a kiss, but that tender moment needs to wait until he’s brushed his teeth. Or when Granny asserts her Alpha status. It’s a cute, updated reworking of a classic story.

This novella is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. In this version, the wolf and the grandma are the same, with Red discovering that her grandma, who has taken care of her since her parents died, is a werewolf. After a bit of adjustment with this new revelation, they discover another new werewolf in the woods and team up to investigate who it is.
It was a short, easy read. The author tries to replicate the same writing style as a fairy tale, with succinct, almost childish language and characterisation. It works in one respect, giving the story an almost lyrical feel, however lessens the impact/relevance of the mature content. In this respect, I don't think the style matched.
That said, it was a fun read, ideal for those that like variations on their favourite fairy tales.

Super simple tale of a 30 something year old "Red Riding Hood". You hit the ground running in this one, and yes it's short. Not very sexy, just kind of to the point with Red and Lee, but Granny is a hoot! I'd take more of Granny's story for sure.
