James Fenton's collection of soldier stories from the Burma Campaign of WWII, in his excellent book, The Forgotten Army, makes fascinating reading. The title of the book is based on the historical reality that the British XIV Army fought in the most difficult and demanding conditions of the second World War against a determined and very tough Japanese Army.
