Hipster Hitler
In a competition of the most hated memes of modern times, "Hipster" has now caught up with "Hitler." Artists James Carr and Archana Kumar thought, why not combine the two? After all, Hitler was indeed a hipster of his time, a failed artist in Vienna scrounging up extra dollars or kroner painting quick architecture scenes for the tourists. In their heavily trafficked website, "hipsterhitler.com," these comic artists posit a new sort of history in which Hitler, wears Silverlake-trendy glasses, thrift store sweaters, and outspoken T-shirts, and the reader begins to quickly understand the history of Hitler in a new and strangely engaging way. The Feral House book of Hipster Hitler includes a few dozen pages of comics heretofore unseen online.

Știți gluma aceeaa despre românii care au pungă cu pungi? Nu? Dar tocmai v-am spus-o... Cam așa am văzut eu cartea asta. Poate pare că sunt pornită împotriva ei, dar nu e așa. Pur și simplu, umorul nu a fost genul meu deloc. Am privit-o ca pe un număr de stand-up comedy, iar eu nu suport acest gen de divertisment. Să plătești doar ca să vezi pe cineva spunând glumă după glumă e ceva ce nu prea pot înțelege. Mă rog, eu nu aș face asta! Nici la comedii nu mă uit, excepție făcând Friends și The Big Bang Theory, care sunt geniale. Ce m-a deranjat tare a fost asocierea asta cu oamenii care luptă pentru drepturile animalelor, de parcă ar fi niște scrântiți. Nu pot da importanță cuiva care face pseudogluma asta. Las mai jos primul paragraf din carte, ca să vă faceți o idee despre ce fel de umor veți descoperi. Dacă râdeți sau măcar zâmbiți, ignorați ce am zis și vedeți că au reduceri pe site-ul editurii! O investiție ratată făcută de editura ART... 64 de note pe goodreads - nota finala: 3.67
Update 26.05.2014: Am vorbit cu un prieten duminica (25.05.2014) despre această carte şi i-am zis că m-a scos din sărite şi că nu am priceput nimic din ea şi că nu am râs deloc. Prietenul ia cartea în mână, se apucă să citească şi, minune, începe să râdă... Am rămas siderat. Şi l-am întrebat ce naibii vede de râs că eu nu văd nicio legătură care să mă facă să râd între acest Hitler şi Hipsteri. Concluzia lui a fost dezarmantă:
- Măi, această carte şi aceste comic webstrip-uri nu sunt pentru oameni care citesc şi cu pretenţii la umor. Sunt pentru cei care butonează net-ul tot timpul, se lovesc de hipsteri pe stradă şi au o vagă idee despre nazism. În locul lui Hitler putea să fie orice altă figură istorică sau din lumea mass-media, doar că Hitler este mai interesant şi poate foarte uşor să cadă în sfera hipster datorită mustăţii, a vegetarianismului şi arianismului. Putea la fel de bine să fie şi George Clooney, dar ăsta este încă în viaţă şi nu e neapărat amuzant să faci bâză de un tip care încă e pe Pământ.
- OK, am înţeles de ce au făcut legătura cu Hitler, dar care-i faza cu hipsterii? Cine-i urmăreşte atât de îndeaproape şi dă atâţia bani pe ceea ce fac ei? Sunt la fel de deranjanţi ca şi cocalarii?
- Sunt tot un fel de cocalari şi ei. De hipsteri e la modă să te iei aşa cum acum câţiva ani a fost la modă să te iei de EMO. Mai ales că foştii EMO sunt hipsterii maturizaţi de azi. Deci, un grup la îndemână care este enervant pentru că vrea să iasă în evidenţă cu orice preţ.
- Deci, ca să gust sau să înţeleg glumele astea trebuie să studiez hipsterii? Nu sunt astea nişte glume făcute de hipsteri ca să râdă de hipsteri tocmai pentru a fi ei cei mai cu moţ hipsteri? Şi cartea o să fie tocmai citită şi cumpărată de hipsteri ca să fie ei ăi mai cool şi deştepţi hipsteri? Aşa cum cocalarii comentau la pozele cu cocalari şi râdeau cel mai abitiri de cei ca ei?
- Mie aşa îmi pare. Dar nu e cazul să-ţi baţi capul prea tare cu ei sau cu comics-urile astea. Glumele le poţi pricepe doar dacă ai habar de trend-ul ăsta. După cum poţi vedea, nu are nicio treabă cu adevărul istoric.
- Aham. Adică unii se pot crăcăna de râs aşa cum o fac eu când citesc glume cu filosofi, logicieni şi oameni de ştiinţă... E umor de nişă cică. Îi bun. O fi având şi asta un sens pe undeva prin cotloanele neştiute ale contemporaneităţii, ştiu eu. Şi chiar îţi pare amuzantă?
- Într-un fel uşor idiot, da. Mi-l imaginez pe Hitler cu tot felul de chestii bio etc. Dar grafica este destul de nasoală dar specifică online-ului.
- Mda... Cred că e pentru prima dată-n viaţă când simţul umorului şi imaginaţia refuză să mă ajute...
Citeam Iepurele Mizantrop când am văzut că a apărut această carte. Bineînțeles că am vrut să pun mâna pe ea.
Și am citit-o în 40-50 de minute după care m-am pus pe drăcuit.
Grafica este sub orice critică. Glumele sunt... ei bine, nu sunt...
Intenția autorilor și ideea lor o fi bună inițial, dar îți trebuie un dram de umor și puțin mai multă inteligență ca să faci ceva ca lumea din ideea asta că Hitler a fost/este Hipster sau se aseamănă cu aceştia. Sau aceştia se pot asemăna cu el. Sau au ceva, orice, în comun. Ei bine, se pare că, ici-colo, au câte ceva în comun.
Prin urmare, concluzia mea este că această carte este tocmai scrisă de hipsteri ca să râdă de ei, pentru că fac glume pe care un om normal nu cred că le pricepe, pentru ei, cu ei, alături de ei etc.
Când am aflat că o să apară cartea, am făcut ceva cercetări pe net. Și nu mică mi-a fost mirarea când am văzut cât de prost și puțin este notată pe goodreads. Am căutat, mai apoi, și siteul de unde a plecat această cărțulie. Și... am așteptat să văd, totuși, cartea.
După cum am spus mai sus, foc și pară m-am făcut.
O dată pentru că nu mi-a venit să cred decizia editurii Art de a scoate un astfel de roman grafic în loc să publice orice alt roman grafic mai de doamne-ajută. Apoi pentru că nu am înțeles cum de s-a ales acest roman atât de slab din punct de vedere grafic și al textului... Mai bine i-ar fi publicat pe Fredo & Pidjin care sunt incomparabil mai amuzanti si inteligenti daca tot s-a vrut publicarea unui webcomic in stilul Iepurelui Mizantrop de la Humanitas...
Ca să nu mai zic de timpul pierdut ca să citesc o cogeamitea porcăria.
Ca și concluzie: dezamăgit rău de editură, cartea este o pierdere de timp, jalnică din punct de vedere grafic, fără pic de umor, nici urmă de inteligență și stupidă până-n măduva oaselor. Tricourile lui HH mai salvează puţin din senzaţia de frustrare care m-a încercat de-a lungul volumului dar e mult, mult, mult prea puţin pentru ca acest volumaş să fie mai mult decât o adunătură de glumiţe spuse la un cocktail bine afumat cu ceva etnobotanice.

This collection of comics chronicling Hitler as a 'hipster' is truly hit or miss in tone and humor but where it truly delivers are the clever and hilarious t-shirt witticisms that he wears with each strip. My personal favorite - 'I control the French Press.' Hipster indeed!

I mean, yeah, it's funny. Hipster Hitler's "Vegetaryan" shirt, Broseph Stalin, Hitler leading the Beer Hall Putsch because they didn't have PBR...it gave me the chuckles.
However, this book suffers from a weakness that most books that are just a compilation of comics do: the sense that you're trying to enjoy a good joke that's gone on for too long. Hipster Hitler is an idea that's fun for a minute or two, or in short bursts.
On the other hand, the book includes historical contexts for the jokes. I could see this as a great learning tool for those who want to learn history but have a hard time doing it (I'm really thinking about high schoolers). For instance, I never knew Ghandi wrote letters to Hitler. So it's not even necessarily the stuff that we all know (although that's included too).
Also, if you're a hipster--even just a tiny bit, like me--it might make you cringe. Hipsters really come off as annoying in this book, for obvious reasons. But if you hate hipsters, or are perfectly cool laughing at yourself, you might enjoy it more.

Maybe a bit of poor taste given Hitler, in essence, isn’t meant to be funny. Using satire as an educational tool, however, works here. With fine-tuned cultural references, maybe too obscure for some, the Hipster stereotype is totes relatable, and laugh out loud funny. The t-shirts paired so well with the storylines too!

Did I learn some history? Absolutely no idea. It was impossible to untangle fact from cringey fiction. I didn’t finish it and thank goodness I got it from the library and didn’t actually spend money on it. I honestly don’t know how it got published. Maybe it was funnier when it was published a decade ago

The "hipster joke" was not that funny and nothing particularly noteworthy about the drawings. The text and the messages were misplaced, for such a topic I would expected at least a footnote with links to the real historical facts.

I've read this book a few years ago, but I must say that, this book may have been the okay-est funny satire and comedic representation of Hitler's life and ideas. The perspective is indeed chuckle-able as, well it shows Hitler being the judging creep, his in-hand coffee entering the frame every few scenes. I guess that's how James Carr wanted to portray Hipsters. And now that I think about it, he was indeed a judging creep. Oh yeah, this book is a comic, not a novel. So, if you enjoy looking at photos of Hitler being a hipster, this book is probably worth shelving.
What made me buy the book?
- Well at first, when I saw the book, which was about 4 years ago, during the time where being a hipster was at its peak, I was curious to find out what's in it. It just so happens that in Sixth Form, I took History as one of my subjects; and we learned about Hitler. Of course, you learn nothing about his comedian side in History; but you can very well imagine it in this book. Another reason why I just bought the book without much thought was that it was covered in protective plastic, at the moment, I didn't know that customers can request the employees to open the plastic cover to take a look at the book. At least in my local bookstore, you can. So, I just bought the book. And while it is not the funniest book, it is quite okay.
But if you have $15 to spend for a book, I suggest going through your wishlist first before buying this book. Because that $15 may be more worth it spent on your wishlist.

This is a collection of comic strips based on the supposed parallels between AH and today's hipsters - the comic strip or graphic novel both criticizes/pans hipsters because of their supposed tweeness and so forth but also tacitly acknowledges that they are a segment of the population, probably a key segment leading to gentrification etc. I suppose this book represents a sly demonization of hipsters - drawing such an analogy - however, it's also humorous, in its own way, in portraying AH and his cronies as weak-minded, or crazed, hipsters of their era.
This is a simply, but effectively, drawn book, which is more of a running joke although it is roughly organized to trace the "career" arc of AH, his rise, and fall, and continues to a brief section likening Stalin to a present-day bro - that is, having the ethos of a perpetual frat boy. This is also humorous.
I suppose the entire concept is tasteless in a way, but it is somewhat successful in being humorous - anything that pokes fun at the Fuhrer, like the show in the "The Producers" or Chaplin's "Great Dictator" you know is going to elicit laughter. How could it not?

Witziger als erwartet – wobei der Comic auch viele negative Rezensionen erhielt. Sicher, das Buch ist kritisch, heikel, satirisch und der Humor speziell … aber ich musste mehrfach laut lachen, und das kommt tatsächlich beim Lesen nur selten vor.
Besonders gefiel mir die Garderobe von Hipster-Hitler, ebenso die versteckten Mini-Texte wie etwa in einem abgebildeten Zeitungsartikel abseits der klassischen Textblöcke.

This is funny as hell. Considering that both Hitler and hipsters have annoyed the shit out of a lot of people, this is a must read. In no way does this glorify/condone either, as it simply pokes fun at two nuisances. Now, where do I find a "Triumph of the Chill" t-shirt?

James Carrin "Hipster Hitler" hymyilytti kyllä hetkittäin, mutta vitsi hipsteri-führeristä kävi melko nopeasti vanhaksi ja alkoi toistaa itseään. Nettisarjakuva-tausta näkyi puisevana piirrosjälkenä, eikä taustoihin oltu viitsitty panostaa lainkaan.
