Not a bad read. Introduced some good info but I felt it was a bit scattered and difficult to follow at times. I almost wished, on occasion, for some of the charts and graphs that the author made a point of avoiding.

Most of the book is written from Britain's perspective, thereby rendering it uninteresting for non-brits. However, the author has made good attempts to explain many complex theories such as how incomes and spending fit into GDP, how government's spending can boost the economy, the way markets function and many such perplexing concepts in an 'easily digestible form'.

The book also gives you an outline of evolution of the 'Political Economy' into modern 'Economics' , it also presents interesting fa

Nice introductory book to layman's economics though it's very much a taster of subjects you'll want to read further into. The author writes well and often explains some fairly complex models and theories in a clear and concise way but it would have been nice to to have had some topics explicated more vigorously or placed in a more relatable context. There's lots of name dropping of famous economists and periods of great economic interest so I'd definitely recommend this book to someone looking t ...more

I started reading this a while and gave up because I didn't like all the food analogies at the start. I picked it up 6 months later and persevered and found that he soon drops all the culinary metaphors after the first chapter and it turns into a really interesting overview of economics and its history.

Would definitely recommend it as an introduction to economics.

Good subject introduction

I have recently started studying for an economics module at university and not knowing anything about this subject previously I wanted a book that would give me an introduction to the subject in an easy read away. This book did exactly that and actually intrigued my interest in the subject. It gave reference to real life events that made the language easy to understand and grasp.

34. After a call out on Twitter for an introduction to economics, I was recommended this. It is an excellent, broadly non-partisan guide to the big theories and concepts of the subject, and it is a sobering way of thinking about the current crisis we are facing, as the descriptions of the 2008-9 financial crisis feel like a walk in the park

Started reading this book with a huge excitement to know about economics, since the cover says
"easy digestable economics". This would be a great book for people living in European Countries. Because the entire book explains economics concept by showing examples happened with Britain.
Got to know some basics of economics, now I should look up to some book explaining indian economics.

Some books suck the joy out of reading, so much so that you stay off books for a few days or weeks, remembering the pain of getting through one single page. I initially picked this book up to learn more about economics for work, as I was working with financial clients at the time. This was over three years ago. I read about 50% of it but I can’t remember any of it. Free Lunch is supposed to be “easily digestible” economics but it was too dry to be digested. There are economics books for those wh ...more

A very good place to start for anyone interested in learning more about economics but not sure where to begin. Though it won't be giving you a detailed explanation for anything, it's rather short and still manages to give the required context for you to get a decent idea of where to go and what to read next. ...more

Rather outdated, but good for some basic understanding. The economic situations being outdated I can forgive, but the notion that was unforgivable however was on page 260 where it talked about luring married women back in to the work force as though married women do not work?! It was published in 2003, not 1953!

I was prompted to read this book by a class teacher of mine as something supplementary to deepen my understand of economics and support my studies.

I’m disappointed to say that there really wasn’t much that was ‘easy’ or ‘digestible’ about this book. I was determined to give it the benefit of the doubt and finish it, but it got progressively worse. The first six chapters (appetiser to main course) were the only chapters that were easy to follow and broken down so those completely new to economic
