A guide to holistic care for cats discusses nutrition as preventative medicine, dietary supplements, vaccinations, herbal remedies, and homeopathic treatments
“Put bluntly, commercial pet foods may sustain life, but they don't promote health.”
“Eating right is the key to good health and longevity for people, and it's the same for cats.”
The book starts off strong, and I agree with many of the author’s points in the beginning. The information on cat nutrition and some fun facts are particularly interesting and useful. However, the second half of the book takes a downturn. It delves into topics like crystals and natural remedies for cats, which I personally found less compelling.
If you’re like me and enjoy reading studies or researching pet nutrition, you probably already knew most of the information presented. Overall, I’d recommend the first half for its valuable insights on feline health, but the latter part didn’t resonate with me as much.
Disagree re keeping cats inside. Maybe that’s relevant for fancy show purebreds but it’s not best for the health of regular cats. The rest of the advice given is either useful or interesting.
Some stuff was good, especially the nutrition. But she had some absurd claims and pseudoscience going on. I don't know much about some of her claims but I know that homeopathic medicine is at best snake oil and at worst poison. Seriously, I don't mind it if humans buy it cause it is usually just water (water does not hold memory like she claimed), but at least humans get the placebo effect. It is frustrating cause I want a guide that understands the pitfalls of commercial food and some vet practices, but I can't find any without homeopathic crap. It makes me question the other claims like that of cat vaccinations, especially cause she made some faulty claims about human vaccinations.
Most of the stuff in this book is over the top and at times contradictory. If you really followed all the recommendations, taking care of your cat would be as time consuming as having another part time job. Nevertheless, I was able to glean some useful information.
This book was a little too preachy and so I felt like I have been horrible to Cali all this time. Which when I got past that!! :) There were a lot of informative information on how to better take care of her, though a lot of it she won't let me do, but oh well....
Author was an actress (early Star Trek) and then got her PHD in nutrition. This book provides an in-depth look at holistic medicine and its MANY different applications particularly to cats.
