I missed this one years ago - and finally put it in my TBR 'comic stack' - that just seems to grow and grow! Batman (B) and Hulk (H) take on the Joker (J) and the Shaper (S) for the fate of the world. S is a supremely power cosmic entity who can grant the power to make dreams come true (think of a genie). When he becomes stranded on Earth he makes a deal with J: help me and I will grant you the power to shape reality! Of course (after the obligatory 'get to know you' fight) H and B have to team up to take J down! Best part of the book are the 'worlds' J creates - a must read just for that! Don't try to figure out the DC/Marvel continuity - suspend belief and go with it!

Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk is a stupendous Len Wein 1982 offering that should delight comic fans and art critics alike. With its learned references, classic artwork, and deft dialogue this is truly a hidden gem that has retained its radiance some 30 (almost 40!) years later. I could never have imagined such an atypical dyad ensconced within two covers would be such an enjoyable read.

Intentionally or not, there's some definite Freudian stuff going on here. With Batman representing Ego (The rational), the Hulk - Id (The irrational), and Bruce Banner - Super-Ego (The third eye's middle-man), I'm sure that coke fueled Viennese would have had a field day with this. And I'm definitely sure that this adds an intriguing psychological dimension not usually seen in comics. All the more interesting is that Banner himself is a feeble Super-Ego at best, perhaps depicting the author's opinion on us hairless apes and our feeble attempts to control our reptilian hind-brains. Dismal or not, the addition of the Joker as well asks a lot of questions about this trifurcated model of human nature.

As great as the psychological questions this comic asks on a not-so-explicit level, so too are equally great and explicit interpolations of great art. I would never have expected to have seen such stellar reduplications of Dali (The ever famous, Persistence of Memory) and Picasso (Guernica) in such an otherwise plebeian work of art as a comic. The learned references are great, the classic depictions of the characters are great, and some words have to be definitely (d/r)eserved for the great paneling. In true comic book fashion, the omnipresent quadrilateral ensconces most of the action however, Len Wein made some great choices depicting numerous scenes within totally open fields unimpeded by the box, as it were. These freedoms of movement added a lot of fluidity to the story and really added another solid dosage of drama in certain scenes.

Overall I was very impressed with this cross-over. The sands of time have done little to detract from its veneer and given the more often than not deplorable state of comics lately, has almost served as a buffing. As above, the facade remains well - preserved at worst, and as below the currents that support it are intriguing. Intentional or not, the psychological underlays are obvious, and add a very thoughtful dimension to an otherwise ostensibly puerile art-form.

Two well preserved thumbs up

The odd pair of Batman & The Incredible Hulk collide in this rare DC/Marvel Crossover story. Batman & Spiderman crossover comics have been common but this pairing has been rare.
The story was good & some decent
graphic work. Not the best of either Batman or Hulk's adventures but together with Joker, there are a few fun parts. Overall a good read to refresh childhood memories.

I scored this on Shopgoodwill after no one else bid on it. It's actually pretty good for a crossover. The Joker teams up with the Shaper of Worlds and Batman and the Hulk get entangled in the machinations. I was not surprised how good the art was, however, since JLGL is consistently great.

Another DC/Marvel crossover, starring Batman and the Hulk!
Apparently part of this story inspires the Emperor Joker story line which is cool.

Overall, this comic was pretty well-done!
There were a few times where I thought ‘why is he doing that?’ but mostly, there were just some sweet comic book actioney moments.
Moments like the sequence of Batman trying to evade Hulk’s fists then the Hulk defeating a monster made specifically to capture him.

Good story by Len Wein and some very nice artwork. This was, I believe, the first DC / Marvel crossover to not feature Superman.

Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk by Len Wein is one of those classic crossover stories that feels like a fun “what if” moment for comic fans. Seeing Batman and Hulk in the same story is exciting from the start, and the book really plays with the contrast between them—Batman’s calm strategy versus Hulk’s raw, unstoppable power.

What I enjoyed most is how the story doesn’t just focus on fighting. It also shows the human side of Bruce Banner and the thoughtful, detective side of Batman. The mix of action, mystery, and classic comic storytelling keeps things moving and makes it a really entertaining read.

Overall, it’s a short but memorable comic that feels like a special moment in superhero history. If you enjoy old-school crossovers or just love seeing two legendary heroes share the same story, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Another adventure from the tale end of the silver age of comics. A seemingly odd pairing of characters actually seems quite logical once you think about. Marvel's big green giant of Brawn up against DCs mightiest and brainiest of heroes. You can't match the Hulk punch for punch, you'd have to out think him and that's exactly what happens when the two Bruce's (Wayne and Banner) end up pitted against each other by The Joker and The Shaper of Worlds (Ok. I'll bite. Who?) more fun reading.

The story is about how the Joker needs to help a powerful alien being to "ease" his physical pain, in return for having absolute power over everything. In order to "cure" the alien, he needs to blast the alien with a huge dose of gamma radiation. And what better source to use than the Hulk himself? Among the action in the book, we get to see how Batman takes down the Hulk. Wonder how he did it? read the book to find out; I won't spoil the story here. Overall, the book is fun to read

The Batman vs The Incredible Hulk!

I haven’t bought this particular comic book per se, but I did buy the “DC vrs Marvel” Omnibus Vol 1, and this story is featured there. I’ll do a review of the omnibus later, but I want to make individual reviews of each crossover stories contained there.

Creative Team

Writer: Len Wein

Illustrator: Jose Luis Garcia Lopez (with assistance of Dick Giordano as “embellisher”)

HOLY SMASH, BATMAN! THE MEETING OF TWO BRUCES

The Joker never knows fear. The Joker simply is fear.

There were already two crossovers between DC Comics and Marvel with Superman and Spider-Man in both cases, now it was turn to change the roster and in that moment, the next most popular characters in both houses were Batman and The Hulk, so it was kinda logical to choose them but it’s kinda odd pairing Batman and The Hulk, even taking in account that on each crossover the writes always find an excuse to put them fighting.

This comic written in 1981 should be quite impactful on certain creative teams later since I found some stuff that easily can inspire comics events that happened many years later. In a moment, The Hulk grasps Batman and the latter fears that may got break his spine and not being able to move anymore, that it’s basically the peak moment in the Knightfall event when Bane breaks the spine to Batman. In other scene, the Joker is imbued with god-like powers naming himselg “King of the World” and able to change reality, which is basically the same idea of Emperor Joker. And other curious thing is that The Shaper of Worlds (the other guest villain) is in reality a cosmic cube, in other words, a tesseract, that it’s something quite known recently in this new millenium thanks to the MCU films.

In other things, while Len Wein is a writer with experience in both houses, DC and Marvel, it seemed like he wasn’t that experienced with The Hulk in comics format but more the TV live action version of the character since Bruce Banner is walking across America finding a cure for his condition but more than that it’s that he uses a fake name using “David Banks” and it was usual in the TV series that Bruce Banner doesn’t use “Bruce” but the name “David”, with only that the comic is quite adamant to specify that Bruce Banner isn’t “David Bruce Banner” like in the TV series but that his full name is Robert Bruce Banner.

In any case, Bruce Wayne meets Bruce Banner! The two Bruces of the two comic book houses meet at last!

Dr. Bruce Banner is under the fake name of “David Banks” and working on the Wayne Research facility (that at first I thought it was a branch operating in New York but later Commisioner Gordon appears so it seems that the action is happening in Gotham City) and there, they are developing a “Gamma Gun” that it was supposed to help to cure a wide variety of illnesses, but soon enough The Joker appears stealing the gadget but provocking that Bruce Banner transforms into The Hulk (In this crossover, like the two previous ones, there isn’t a dimensional separation of DC world and Marvel world, so The Joker knows who The Hulk is and even Batman is aware that The Hulk is Bruce Banner).

The Joker confuses with Hulk’s mind (that it’s not that hard anyway) putting the Green behemoth to battle agains the dark knight. I won’t detail the whole fight but it was curious that Batman is able to put to sleep Hulk with gas but The Huls remains as the monster even slept, and it’s not until he awakens again that he’s already calm that he turned into Bruce Banner again (I found odd that he remained as The Hulk being slept, but I am not expert on The Hulk).

The Joker needs the Gamma Gun to use it on The Shaper of Worlds (a character that indeed first appeared on The Incredible Hulk comics, but certainly it’s quite a farfetched option as guest villain for the Hulk taking in account that with Batman they chose The Joker, his primary best known villain). The Shaper of Worlds is able to make realiy the dreams of others, he doesn’t have imagination of own, but he needs the imagination of others to make his powers to work, but currently he’s unstable and he needs the Gamma Gun to do that (a weak plot but it works fine).

There is a cool moment where Commisioner Gordon talks by phone with General Ross (having a cameo of Doc Samson).

It’s an odd pairing for crossover, but as I said already, it seems that it was quite impacful with the following generation of creative teams. Cool crossover.

´Nuff Said!

At a first glance you might think that Batman and the Hulk have nothing in common. But I think this was the right call for Batman’s first crossover with Marvel.

Again, another five star crossover event. This time we begin with Bruce Banner working in a Wayne Tech faciligy under a pseudonym, Wayne enterprises is producing a Gamma radiation machine and he hopes it could be a solution to his Hulk-related issues.

It all goes sideways when the Joker attacks the facilities trying to take the device for a mysterious contractor. Hulk rages and takes on the clown prince of crime’s forces and Batman arrives just in time to face the Emerald giant to avoid unnecesary destruction.

The contractor is a creature, I think it comes from Marvel, that wants the Gamma radiation to cure itself from madness.

Most of the story is dedicated to Batman barely fighting the Hulk or giving a helping hand to Bruce Banner. The Joker is the perfect chaos that forces both characters to cross paths.

I think Batman knows how to approach the Hulk due to his precious experiences with another great monster in, Solomon Grundy… maybe I’m overthinking it.

We do see a sort of proto Emperor Joker in this story, so that’s cool.

Anyways, these two characters coming together is an interesting sight to see. While at first they seem completely different and impossible to join in a story, the writing is strong enough to show the deeper emotional connections they share.

Also, It will never not be hilarious seeing Batman using a life-like costume over his Batsuit.

A simple but effective story however it is the art by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez that is the draw here. Inked by Dick Giordano Jose is in top form here and it is one of the best examples of his art I have seen. Too often he is inked by inferior inkers but Dick (as he did with many others including Neal Adams) elevates Jose's pencils so that every frame is a masterpiece.

The story involves Shaper of Worlds going mad and needing a cure (don't worry if you never heard of this character before - he is one of those cosmic Marvel Gods that flits into a story from time to time) and he tasks the Joker to find it - it ends up that he needs the gamma radiation from the Hulk. While it is not a story that stays with you - I did think the impossible task of having the Hulk and Batman interact was handled well. I have never been a fan of the Hulk for the reason he is too powerful and obviously it is odd to see Batman go up against him but their fights are staged in such a way that it isn't too silly.

In the end, this is the second classic Marvel DC team up and the art is much better than the first one and I would even say the story is a bit more clever and the reason for the inevitable super-hero fight makes more sense than the Superman Spider-Man story. Glad I got a chance to read it.

2 stelle e mezza.

This one is a great deal more ambitious than its predecessor and for that I appreciate it. I like the abstract ending and the consistent build. Having Batman face a cosmic threat with the Hulk is a really fun place to take a crossover, and in a lot of ways I like this better than the Spider-Man and Superman crossover. I do have one major gripe though, and it’s that Batman beats the Hulk by knocking the wind out of him. Batman is my second favorite superhero after Spider-Man, and I’m sorry, there is no way he should be able to knock the wind out of Hulk. It’s the Hulk

I guess it’s reasonable to have a reality warping machine doofus be the thing that bridges the power gap between Batman and the Hulk but it’s just a stupid meeting. I don’t really care. It would’ve been more interesting to see Bruce Banner try to thwart Batman than to watch Batman try to fight the hulk.

Ultimately it’s just a Joker story again.

The art was, well, colorful, I guess. Lots of bright colors and big muscles. But it was all so busy, and sometimes I couldn't even tell what was happening in the action scenes. But I guess that's what people like in these kinds of comics.

That was pretty good!
There were a lot of interesting team-ups in this issue: The Joker and the Hulk against Batman; the Hulk and Batman against the Joker; there was even a team-up with Batman and the Joker against the Hulk. That was an interesting subplot.

2 of the heros going head to head! Oh my!

Kind of spoiler- its like the comic version of the famous romance plot line enemies to lovers…but not.

As expected, Joker has things go off the rails.
