I'm not a fan of moralizing Biblical people, and that's the premise of this book. It does occationally show how the people reflect Jesus, but... *Shrugs half-heartedly*

Used with Liberty University Online ICE exam: Survey of Biblical Literature.

What an awesome intro into the unlikely heroes of the Old Testament! I would recommend this book to any new Christian or someone who wants an overview understanding of the Old Testament in an easy way to understand. I had the pleasure of hearing Ed Hindson speak at Calvary Chapel in Chino Hills (Jack Hibbs church!) while I was visiting. He has a way of explaining, expressing, and helping Christians further understand God's word. This book is free on the Logo App if anyone is interested in reading :)

My most enjoyable and accessible textbook from my Bible class this sub-term (basically, it's a half-semester course . . . kind of hard to explain xD). I really liked how applicable it was and how engaging and down-to-earth the writing style was. It provided a unique perspective on different Bible characters, and it packed some powerful truths inside its meager number of pages.

So overall, I enjoyed it, but it's just not something I would normally read. It earns 3.5 stars, just for personal preference. ;)

I really enjoyed this book! It was for my Bible class at college, but it wasn't like a normal textbook. It was a very easy read but had wonderful lessons. I would actually buy this one to read it again and share it with everyone!

Who doesn't enjoy a relatively entertaining textbook?

This was very entertaining, especially for a text book, outside of schooling I usually like to read similar books to this. The writing style is fantastic. The only downside is that it's slanted towards adults, so there were times when I personally had a disconnection. But I passed the course with flying colors!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book of Bible stories. It read like a grown up's version of children's Bible stories and would perhaps be more valuable to newer Bible readers.

The authors down to earth style brings these wonderful lessons to us in an easy, entertaining way.

The theme is that these Biblical heroes were very unlikely choices but with faith, and sometimes a lot of encouragement from God, they lead their people through treacherous times. The stories encompass the entire Old Testament and will be very familiar to anyone who has read their Bible.

I really enjoyed taking a deep look at some of the old testament heroes of the faith. I was able to learn a lot from their lives and see that deep down some of them struggled with the same issues that I do today. They were able to overcome those fears and struggles and with God I can too. Dr. Hindson also did a good job of showing how God's promise to His people was kept alive throughout the generations. God was faithful to His people despite their unfaithfulness to Him.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! Diving deeper into the lives of some of the Old Testament greatest heroes, seeing not only their faith, but their humanity, and vision under God's direction was inspiring and motivating. This is a simple easy read with only 13 chapters, each chapter focusing on a different "hero", I'd recommend a chapter a day as a devotional if you're not an avid reader.

I definitely will recommend this to all my friends and family.

This was a book I was required to read as part of a required theology class for my college. It is pitifully weak in terms of legitimate scholarship, and very disappointing in its depth. If you are a new born again Christian fundamentalist, it will probably be helpful for you. If you were brought up in the church, there's nothing new here.

Not a fan of the paraphrased "updated" portions of the Bible that also seemed to read between the lines and assumed a lot of information. There seemed to be some stretching and pushing a certain message that we need to be these people.

People who write self-help books are never really good authors. They always feel uninspired. The juxtaposition between much more severe events and then saying "Hey, this is just like you when you were worried and stuff" was amusing.

Uplifting

I enjoyed the narrative of each Old Testament saint was given. I also like how Dr. Hindson related the past to the present struggles we face today.

What a simple, to the point book with great illustrations and very convicting stories using OT heroes.
Quite possibly the most convicting book I've ever read.

Ed Hindson is a great teacher. Not only is he very knowledgeable about the material, he has interesting stories and jokes that parallel to the text. Would read just about anything from him.

Extremely basic, dry, and easy. No challenge. Pretty much just rewrites Biblical accounts of specific stories.

Many of the lessons presented in this book are true and good. However, I don't really this book engages with the Biblical texts in a way consistent with the intent of the Biblical authors.

I understand it’s meant to be a devotional but it literally borders on heresy.

This is a wonderful book I first read as part of my course material for class, but then read it with my son, and then again for family devotions. This is a true staple to have for any Christian home. It shares some of the stories of the Bible giving a more in-depth look at the stories, struggles, and triumphs, turns it into something practical and relatable, then each chapter is ended with discussion questions about how the ready can improve their faith. I also plan on using this with my youth group at church. Every time I read it, and from every story, I get encouragement to grow my faith.

I LOVE THIS !!!! I probably would have never picked this book up on my own just because the title seemed so pretentious. However, working through this book as part of my degree has been amazing. As I looked deeply into the lives of these Heroes and looked at the good, the bad and the ugly, I was required to consider how and why I might relate to them. I could write a book on the benefits I received reading this book however I'm not going to try and explain.... read the book.

This book is a highly-readable and fully-researched telling (in chronological order) of the stories of Old Testament heroes figured into the fulfillment of God's promises to His people. I saw in a new way how many of the well-known Bible characters filled their particular places in the genealogy of Jesus. One of the great quotes: "an excuse is nothing more than a lie packaged to look like an explanation." Another good one: "Living for today doesn't prepare us well for tomorrow."

Such an amazing, simple look at the lives of those in the Bible.
Read with The Promise and the Blessing by Michael Harbin, this book opens your eyes to history in a way you never would have imagined.
It's easy to understand, and put into terms that today's generation can relate with.
Five stars all the way.

I loved this book and it was easy to read. I liked reading the seperate stories of the examples of courage from men of the Bible. It helped me understand the stories I was already familiar with in a realistic context instead of 'just another story.' Being able to understand how their courage could apply to my life gave me better visualization and encouraged me in my own walk with faith.
