God is The Way of Islam offers clear and comprehensive knowledge about Islam for readers curious about Islam, and willing to move past barriers to mutual understanding. The author directed the Office on Christian/Muslim relations for the National Council of Churches for nearly 30 years. He advocates for strong relations between faiths through better understanding of the multivalence of Islam. This book makes Muslims and their religious worldviews accessible in a concise, informed, and respectful manner.
I read this book in preparation for a Road Scholar trip I will be taking. I was aware of the many similarities in the beliefs of Muslims and Christians and Speight does a good job of pointing these out. Truly both faiths are looking to the same God. I feel that radicals in both faiths are probably unaware of their similar backgrounds. One drawback of the book is that it is quite out of date, written in 1989, so many statistics mentioned are probable inaccurate.
This was a very well written, informative book for Christians wanting to learn more about the religion of Islam. I gave it four stars rather than five only because it was outdated, despite an afterword written post 9/11. Because of recent world events I read much of the cultural context info with a historical lens, but the sections on beliefs, origins, etc were fantastic.
