About the author

Jacqueline Wilson was born in Bath in 1945, but spent most of her childhood in Kingston-on-Thames. She always wanted to be a writer and wrote her first ‘novel’ when she was nine, filling in countless Woolworths’ exercise books as she grew up. As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her!) before turning to writing novels full-time.

One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. This was also the first of her books to be illustrated by Nick Sharratt. Since then Jacqueline has been on countless awards shortlists and has gone on to win many awards. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award.

Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award.

Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!

In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. In 2008 she became Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

This is a good book , though it only had extracts from other Jacqueline Wilson books , I would've preferred it if would've been just one book instead . I still enjoyed it thoroughly and was fascinated by the amount of description it had.

Pretty good

I liked big day out because it was rather adventurous. All the books in this book I had read later on and I liked how she took books and writing a little extra and the main character or characters.

Didn’t like it, easily the worst book I've ever read.
Every story in this collection is the same. Main character of each story is a girl of around 10-14 years of age with a whole lot of siblings and step-siblings. One of the parents is a step-parent and the main character dosen't like them, and wish to be alone with their parent. But the step-parent takes them out on a holiday and the story ends some of the main girls liking it and some of them hating the day out.
What's the point of short stories, if they are all the same?

I love this book because of how four different girls had their "big day out". If you have read Lily Alone and The Worst Thing About My Sister, this is like a sequel to these books.

This book written by Wilson for World Book Day 2012 is appropriate for most children although 7-10 year old girls will probably love it the most. It is a book made up of four short stories about four different families going out for the day and having different experiences. The stories which are written in the first person, are narrated by the main characters Lily, Hayley, Laura and Martina or Marty. I would say it is quite a versatile book as it can be read to a whole class (not sure if the boys would be so keen though as all the main characters are girls)or read independently. It can also be used for curriculum support (literacy) to help improve reading skills as it is very easy to read. I loved this book and would have given it a five star rating had it not been for the fact that I believe having only girls as the main characters will put boys off from reading it.

I've just finished reading this with one of my year 7 reading groups. They all really enjoyed it and desperately want to read more about the individual characters. The short story format worked really well for a reading group and the vocab was a good level for struggling readers (plenty of tricky words for them to practice sounding out, but enough they could already read for the stories to flow).

I think the final story was my favourite and I like that it highlighted the work of Battersea.
