Though he was already a household name in the literary world in the 1960's, my introduction to him occurred during his past-progressive phase in the 1980's ("I was itching," "I was shirting," etc.) He was like an existentialist crashing the party of structural phenomenologists that the 'Beat' generation was trying hard to pretend not to be, which is to say, his things (poetry? prose? who knows?) were always a delight to read.
