600 books2,063 followersBorn in Visalia, California, I'm a small town girl at heart. I love central California's golden foothills, oak trees, and the miles of farmland. In my mind, there's nothing sweeter in the world than the heady fragrance of orange blossoms on a sultry summer night.
As a little girl I spent hours on my bed, staring out the window, dreaming of far off places, fearless knights, and happy-ever-after endings. In my imagination I was never the geeky bookworm with the thick coke-bottle glasses, but a princess, a magical fairy, a Joan-of-Arc crusader.
My parents fed my imagination by taking our family to Europe for a year when I was thirteen. The year away changed me (I wasn't a geek for once!) and overseas I discovered a huge and wonderful world with different cultures and customs. I loved everything about Europe, but felt especially passionate about Italy and those gorgeous Italian men (no wonder my first very Presents hero was Italian).
I confess, after that incredible year in Europe, the travel bug bit, and bit hard. I spent much of my high school and college years abroad, studying in South Africa, Japan and Ireland. South Africa remains a country of my heart, the people, the land and politics complex and heart-wrenching.
After my years of traveling and studying I had to settle down and earn a living. With my Bachelors degree from UCLA in American Studies, a program that combines American literature and American history, I've worked in sales and marketing, as well as a director of a non-profit foundation. Later I earned my Masters in Writing from the University of San Francisco and taught jr. high and high school English.
I now live in Seattle and Hawaii with my three sons. I never mind a rainy day, either, because that's when I sit at my desk and write stories about far-away places, fascinating people, and most importantly of all, love. I like a story with a happy ending. We all do.

2. 5 stars rounded up. The plot was interesting. The hero was great.
The heroine was awful. She was a poor little rich girl (a princess) who has a chip on her shoulder about being adopted. She never felt loved, she was terrified of her arranged marriage, so she decided to give her virgin self to a playboy who had been stalking her. She's seven weeks pregnant when the story opens. The playboy (who was married and wanted nothing to do with her after the notch on his bedpost) is killed in a car accident.
Heroine traded places with the heroine of book one in this series so that she could slip her security detail and confront the playboy with her pregnancy. They look exactly alike except for hair color. Hero is a Sheikh and the boss of heroine's lookalike. Heroine is useless in the office, throws up all the time, speaks fluent French in her sleep - so hero finally puts two and two together and comes up with four.
When hero takes her back to her verbally abusive royal parents, he decides to claim the baby as his own and asks for the heroine's hand in marriage.
This is a wonderful thing the hero has done - and I didn't get it at all. They hadn't slept together. They had known each other for a few days - with the heroine lying the entire time. What is it for the hero to like? Heroine is a hot mess - and she's not all that nice to the hero before their marriage - or after it for that matter. She doubts the hero at every turn and tries to leave him and it's all so tedious I just wanted to slap her.
Hero makes up for the heroine's deficiencies and I did enjoy the not so-subtle "mystery" of the why the heroine had a doppelgänger .
Don't read if TSL/ethically challenged heroines annoy you. She cheated on her fiance with a married man, she lied to the hero about her identity, she is going along with passing off her child as the hero's, she thinks living in the lap of luxury with a sheikh is independence.

I need to be completely honest when I say that this is probably one of the best recent books dealing with sheikhs out there. The story line was so new, welcoming and full of awesomesauce. I truly enjoyed it and instantly fell in love with all the characters. The hero and heroine are a perfect blend and make everything passionate, cocky and amusing. Not to mention the love and sacrifice described in the book is beautiful. READ IT!!

After reading Not Fit for a King, the first book about two sisters and which I liked http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...
I was looking forward to His Majesty’s Mistake, the follow-up book of Emmeline d’Arcy, the royal princess who had asked a complete stranger, who just happened to be her double, to take her place for a few hours and what happens to her – although I did find Emmeline a bit of a snob and empty-headed in the first book…but hey who knows, she could redeem herself and I would grow to like her.
I liked the first book much more. Hannah was, for me, more engaging and lovable with some spunk and spirit. Emmeline I found difficult to engage with. She was such a winger most of the time that I could not understand how Sheik Makin al-Koury could ever love this spoilt princess. I thought he was a great hero…and fabulous sheik too. He was compassionate and caring and loving and yes so patient. I did however; find it difficult in understanding the reasons for his decision to marry Emmeline. This is some emotionally strung woman. But it’s great when someone gets a second chance at happiness and this is what happens in this story.
A bit disappointed that I never got to see Hannah and Emmeline, after discovering they are sisters, getting together. I found the ending a bit rushed….what happened in the seven months to the two couples who after all have a strong family connection?
I gasped when I read some parts of the story that were a bittttt OTT…but hey I love Jane Porter’s books and this is a world that we travel to where anything is POSSIBLE.
This author is one of my FAVOURITE romance writers and I have read all her books and I can’t wait for her next one.

My final book for the year 2017 was not a dud!
It was an wonderfully unrealistic story about a princess who got knocked up and dumped by a player, but was fortunate enough to find love with a multi billionaire sheikh.
Yeah. That happens every day! Lol
You had the suspend your belief more than usual while this Jane Porter book, but the fairytale was wonderful once you did.
The book left you grinning from ear to even though the princess was annoying as hell and the sheikh would have walked all over her. Instead, he was understanding, kind, and caring toward her.
He insecurities drove me nuts. I wanted to shake her. She’s 25 and allowing her adoptive mother to treat her so horribly. Move out! Live your life.
Still, I enjoyed the heck of this book and am so happy that I didn’t finish the year on a stinker. This bodes well for my reading choices in 2018. :D

This was pretty enjoyable. I liked the way the hero was drawn to the heroine against his will, and I loved how protective he was. The last scene was great and dramatic -- I liked how the hero didn't give up on her.

I think I have found a new favorite Author. This is the second book I have read by Mrs. Jane Porter. Both books were really good, and both were packed high with emotions. The story's just drew me in.
In this story Emmeline got her twin sister Hannah to switch places with her. It was only suppose to be for a day or two. Alejandro had told Emmeline that he loved her. Had convinced Emmeline to lose her virginity to him. When Emmeline finds out she is pregnant, she tried to call him. He blocked all the calls, and wouldn't talk to her. Desperate times, calls for desperate measures. She switched places with her sister, and dyed her hair black. When she tracked him down, he was in a bar, making out with another chick. Before she could get him to listen to her, Emmeline was man handled by Makin. It took her awhile to figure out who he was. Makin was shocked. His secretary has called out sick most of the week, and he finds her in a bar. He is so mad, that I think steam was rising and blowing out of his ears. Hanna has always been an excellent personal assistant. She always looked very professional, and bland. Wearing gray, and black suits, with shirts that buttoned up beneath her chin. He doesn't know what to think of finding his assistant in a bar, in a sexy cocktail tail dress. For the first time, he notices her curves, and beauty. Makin never mixes business with pleasure. He is uncomfortable with how his body is reacting to Hannah. Emmealine on the other hand has to fake her way through, pretending she know how to be a secretary. One thing she can't fake is morning sickness. She can't hide it. Oh how she wished she would skip that part of the pregnancy. She does not have time to deal with being sick, and learning a new job, and pretending to be someone she is not. She has no choice. Makin took her to the desert, and switching back is almost impossible without anyone noticing.
I loved how Makin started to care for Emmeline once he got to know her. this was a sweet romance with a lot of emotions. the story pulled me in, and I was not able to put the book down. I stayed up late again... until I finished it. The book was worth loss of sleep.

Beautifully written, fabulous story! I loved Not Fit for a King? and was so excited to get my hands on this title. His Majesty's Mistake is the other side of the story--what Emmeline is up to while Hannah is playing princess in Raguva. When I first started this book, Emmeline was not my favorite person! I thought she was reckless, self-involved, and kind of selfish. Jane Porter manages to bring out the most lovable characteristics so that before I knew it I was rooting for Emmeline just as I had for Hannah. As always, I fell in love with the hero along with the heroine (actually I think I fell for him before she did) and thoroughly enjoyed their journey towards the happily ever after. Pick it up-you won't regret it! It's perfect for some fun summer reading.

It’s impossible to enjoy a book when you dislike the heroine. Emmeline - the secret twin of Hannah in Book 1 is simply awful and her behaviour towards the hero Makin is unbelievable. Why on earth he would marry her, let alone love her was beyond all understanding.
As for the ‘secret twins of a royal princess’ trope - no - it was utterly ridiculous! It made no sense at all in both books.
I understand we have to have External and internal conflict to power the story but it should be credible and sympathetic.
This writer can produce brilliant stories but often the suspension of disbelief is too difficult - and in this case the heroine too unlikeable for me to enjoy it. However I have to say this has a fabulous love scene towards the end of the book which made me add a star. 😉

DEMONIOS.
-No sé.

I adore Jane Porter's writing style and I love, love, LOVE this book. While I really enjoyed book 1 of this twin swap duo, book 2 had Sheikh Makin Al-Koury in it - sigh..... Princess Emmeline was a bit precious, however, this was a result of a horrible upbringing with truly nasty parents. After being pursued by an Argentinean polo player for years, she finally gave him her virginity, only for him to lose interest immediately after - leaving her pregnant and alone. Along comes Makin, the boss of her lookalike Hannah. Hannah and Emmeline agree to swap places, with Emmeline's intent being to confront the polo player to tell him about her pregnancy. Creating a scene in a nightclub, Makin drags his assistant (now played by Emmeline) onto a plane, heading for his private island where Hannah has organised a weekend event with VIP guests. Of course, Emmeline doesn't know the first thing about being an executive PA, coupled with her morning sickness, her subterfuge comes undone quite quickly. It just gets better from this point on. The only thing missing from this book is a longer epilogue. Can't wait to read it again!

I like a good surprise !! Turns out that the spoiled, selfish princess was an unhappy & insecure girl who just wants to be loved. Her adoptive parents always belittle her & make her feel worthless.
Enter Makin, our sheihk hero. I really like when a hero turns his alphaness into tenderness and his power & strength into caring & protection. Makin was that & more. He was what Emmeline really needed to find her inner strength & fight her insecurities.
My only complaint : everything happens in less than a week. No time is given by JP to build the relationship between Emmeline & Makin. I understand love at first sight, but this isn't the case here, thou, the attraction is there from the beginning. The morning when Makin discovers that princess Emmeline is pretending to be his assistant Hannah, he despises everything she represents & doesn't shy from letting her know his opinion of her. He insists on taking her home to her parents, on the flight, he discovers he is wrong about her. During the confrontation with her parents, he pretends to be the father of her unborn child, and ask her hand in marriage. The next day, he marries her and discovers that he loves her. On the first day of marriage, Emmeline discovers that she loves Makin & all her insecurities are back with vengeance. On the second day, she decides to hurt him & call the marriage off. When do they stop & think ? it is too fast to be really convincing.
The epilogue is heart-warmingly cute.

Super Alpha Sexy Compassionate Sheikh + Sassy Pregnant Emotionally strung Princess = WINNER!!
You will instantly fall in love with Princess Emmeline d'Arcy and Sheikh Makin Al-Koury and will be emotionally vested from the get go. I love how protective Makin is of Emmeline even though he is drawn to her against his will.
Jane has a style that is uniquely her own. What really takes this book from good to truly amazing is the storytelling; not only is it vivid and descriptive but it is mainly told from Makin’s POV; you immediately get an insight into Makin’s emotions and his conflicting feelings towards Emmeline.
His Majesty’s mistake is truly an amazing story; funny at times yet intensely emotional at others; a story about second chances and looking beyond the surface.
His Majesty's Mistake definitely stands out as one of the best ‘Sheikh’ books I have read recently. Highly recommended and my Top Pick!

Posted on What I'm Reading
I can't remember if I read this or I just bought it because it intrigued me. Looking back on my blog it looks like I just bought it on a Walmart trip planning to read. Here we are almost 10 years later finally getting to this story. I wanted a quick read, and Harlequin Presents is great for a quick read. Today, I bring you His Majesty's Mistake by Jane Porter.
We have Princess Emmeline d'Arcy she always felt "unworthy and impossible to love." You find out the reason why. Then we meet Sheikh Makin Al-Koury, and believes Emmeline is flighty, self-center princess. Now you wonder how could he be around her when he can't stand her, glad you ask she's masquerading as assistant. Well, his assistant looks alike and so they traded places so she can meet with the father of her baby and tell him what was going on. Anyway, he finally figures out what's going on, and since it's a short story we are going stop there.
I like the story, I felt bad for Emmeline, because she was looking for love in all the wrong places. We have a handsome Sheikh wanting to save her once he got the full background. Great little quick read. In need a quick pick me up, or escape you might like.
Not sure where I got this little gem, it's been almost 12 years.

Princess Emmeline finds herself pregnant and suprned publicly by the father of her baby. She runs into the restroom at the airport and comes face to face with her look a like and they trade places and phone numbers. Emmeline becomes Sheikh Al-Koury's personal assistant. Read through to see how it turns out. This was a second read for me on this book as I read it years ago. Enjoy the book.

Grabbed this book as I had just discovered Book 1 of the series, Not Fit for a King and wanted to read Emmeline’s story. I did enjoy Hannah’s story a bit more, but His Majesty’s Mistake is a good read. Loved the hero Makin, went back and forth on Emmeline. Wonderful descriptive writing as usual for Jane Porter. Perfect quick, fun, romantic read.

Princess Emmeline d’Arcy of Brabant, who was engaged to marry King Zale Patek, was storming through Mynt Lounge, one of South Beach’s trendiest night clubs, in search of Alejandro Ibanez, Argentina‘s star polo player. Pregnant, unwed and engaged to another man, Princess Emmeline was on a mission to get answers from Alejandro. For five years he had chased her and she had turned down his advances. In a state of weakness she succumbed to his advances and gave up her virginity. All it took was that one night. One night of empty love making and losing her virginity for Princess Emmeline d’Arcy to get pregnant. Alejandro had been avoiding her calls, but now she wanted answers. She was sure that once he saw her he’d remember how much he’d said he adored her. However, when Emmeline spotted Alejandro in the VIP section of Mynt Lounge, he was not alone. Sitting on his lap was young model, Penelope Luca. Penelope was not just sitting on Alejandro’s lap, he had his hand seductively up her short, red skirt. Witnessing this, Emmeline sharply called his name. Alejandro didn’t even acknowledge her. Suddenly a deep voice spoke behind her and Sheikh Makin Al-Koury was leading her out of the club. Sheikh Makin Al-Koury couldn’t believe that she was in a club and dressed like … sex! What the Sheikh didn’t know was that who he thought was his assistant, Hannah Smith, was really Princess Emmeline d’Arcy of Brabant. A few days prior, at a polo match in Palm Beach, Princess Emmeline had asked Hannah if they could switch places for a few hours. Emmeline was amazed at how much her and Hannah resembled each other. She had asked if they could trade places for a few hours so Emmeline could go out in public and not be recognized. What she really had planned was to find and confront Alejandro. In keeping up the charade that she was indeed Hannah, she accompanied Makin to Kadar for a large conference he was hosting for two dozen dignitaries and their spouses. After arriving to Kadar, Makin had gotten a call that Alejandro was in an automobile accident and in surgery. He knew he had to tell Hannah, but he knew it would be hard.
Will Sheikh Makin Al-Koury find out that Hannah was really Princess Emmeline, who he disliked? Will Emmeline and Hannah be able to switch places before everyone finds out about their charade? Will Emmeline keep her unborn baby and risk humiliating her family?
I really enjoyed this story and the characters. Emmeline, although a princess, showed real emotion and concerns. They were characteristics that anyone could relate to. Makin was a big, handsome, wealthy man full of power. He put on a tough persona, but really was a loving and caring person who only wanted to do good and help others. Makin was the type of man that you could fall in love with. This book was very well written and had you believing in true love. I only wish that there was a sequel to it. I would highly recommend this book and gave it a 5 star rating.

In Not Fit For A King?, Emmeline is portrayed as a snotty, stuck-up, selfish Princess who only cares about herself. Because of this, I wasn't too thrilled to read a book from her point of view, but I'm really happy I did! Because literally everyone in her life has misinterpreted her. She's not a spoiled princess, but a helpless girl who just wants to be happy and loved.
When Emmeline had switched places with Hannah, it was to find Alejandro, a notorious player, and tell him about their baby that she's pregnant with. Unfortunately for her, Emmeline had no idea of Alejandro's reputation until it was too late. Left with no help from her baby's father, Emmeline is lost and still stuck in America as Hannah. Just when she can't take any more, Makin, Hannah's boss, comes and whisks her away to his castle in the desert.
Makin knows something is different with his assistant and he can't understand why he has become so aware of how feminine she is. Their relationship is definitely heating up and you can't help but feel for Emmeline as she opens up to him after being so hurt by Alejandro. Things got a little slow as Emmeline stayed with Makin in his castle, but you were always left with anticipation of seeing how things would unfold when people figured out that Emmeline actually isn't Hannah.
This was a cute romance that cleared up any unanswered questions in Not Fit For A King?. It was a quick read and perfect to read on a summer day. So if you want a romance that is quick and light, read Jane Porter's Harlequin Presents novels! You won't want to put them down!

Jane Porter is known for her endearing romances and His Majesty’s Mistake is no exception. In this book, we get to know Princess Emmeline, as she impersonates her sister as Sheikh Makin Al-Koury’s personal assistant.
And, just as you might think, Emmeline makes a complete mess of things, leading the sheikh to suspect things are not on the up and up.
Hannah has been the sheikh’s personal assistant for five years, and in all of that time he has never been attracted to her, so why now does he suddenly feel an unexplainable attraction.
Princess Emmeline and Sheikh Makin have you falling in love with them immediately and you continue rooting for them throughout the book. It is a fairytale romance that young women fanaticize about, and the reader is immediately caught up in the antics of Princess Emmeline.
Then, you have Sheikh Makin, a very proper sheikh who has his life perfectly mapped out, and doesn’t understand his sudden attraction to his personal assistant.
But life has not always been a bed of roses for the princess and as her secrets begin to tumble out, she finds comfort and support from the sheikh.
In true Jane fashion, the book has an incredible story line, wonderful descriptions that bring you into the story, lovable characters, and a fairytale ending.
When I am looking for a quick, fun, romantic read, I find myself looking for Jane’s books. If you are a fan of Jane Porter, you will enjoy this series. If you haven’t read Jane yet, this is a great series to begin with.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.

Okay, so this is not as great as the first book, Not Fit for a King? And got a glimpse of Emmeline in the first book and how her idea got Hannah (and her) into trouble made me think of her as a selfish and impulsive princess. At some first pages reading this book, I still did. But then, just like Sheikh Makin Al-Koury got to know her better, I did too.
I gotta say I like Makin character better than Emmeline, although most of the time I refuse to read any romance with Arabic hero in it. Any title with the word 'sheikh, arabic, dessert' or synopsis with arabic name, I used to leave it without giving a try. But I gotta say I was drawn to Makin, just like I was drawn to Zale. I liked them both. :)
Anyway, it felt a bit silly for me reading his name, Makin. And it's a good thing I read this in English, because if it's in Indonesian, I might found some trouble differentiate it with Indonesian word 'makin' which means 'increasingly, more and more, progressively'.
So when you say 'makin handsome', we Indonesian might understand it as 'increasingly handsome'... ^^
I was hoping to see Zale again in this book, sadly he didn't appear at all. Well, perhaps he's busy being a king. :)

Maybe 3.5 stars. I shouldn't punish the story for the fact that I was asked to review it for the Booksellers Best Awards, and it happens to be the second book in a series. Of course I haven't read the first, and didn't have time to hunt it down before I read this one.
It was a nice twist on the "princess and the pauper" tale, with twins separated at birth and raised on different continents, who decide to switch places based on their remarkably similar looks. They don't figure out that they really are twins until the very end of this book. It was entertaining, and romantic, and the male lead is truly a prince charming.
Emmeline was a bit too high strung for me - I prefer stronger heroines. She would seem to know her own mind, then collapse in a fit of self-doubt and self-pity.
Since the book was only 192 pages, the action moved at a breathtaking pace. I guess there are people in the world who are this rich and can do things so swiftly. I guess. Completely not part of my reality!

3.5 stars -- well, Ms Porter accomplished it...I really wasn't sure how I would feel about Emmeline after the previous book, but I really liked her. She was so completely different from Hannah, and raised in completely different circumstances...and at least her behavior was totally explainable... The reason I rounded down for the 3.5 stars instead of rounding up like Not Fit For A King? was because her insecurities dragged a little too close to the end of the book...it was hard, like "not again" ish. But I still enjoyed the dynamic with Makin and Emmeline...

As the companion to "Not Fit for a King?", I knew that I would like this romance, if only for any slight continuation of Hannah & Zale's story I could get, which I did. Unsurprisingly, I really enjoyed this tale as well. I liked the difference in tone, and it's more tender and tentative love story. Specifically, I liked Makin's protectiveness and Emmeline's embrace of maturity and responsibility.
If I ever come across a Jane Porter novel that I don't recommend, I'll let you all know. Until then, Five Stars Always.

Accustomed to being waited on hand and foot, Emmeline finds herself having to jump to the click of her boss’s skilful fingers – day and night! But once the Sheikh uncovers her shameful past will his touch be nothing but a scorching memory?

This was a great book. The best hp I have read in a long time. I really enjoyed it. Sheikh Makin was a wonderful alpha hero. This was the second book in Porter's Royal Scandal Series. I really liked the first book, but liked this one even more. After reading the first book, I didn't think I would like Emmeline very much, but I was wrong. I was so glad she got her happily ever after.

Sequel to my enjoyable surprise beach read - I didn't think I would like Princess Emmeline, but there is always another side to a story. She had a great romance with the Sheikh, and these are fun, quick reads.
