Never before (in either recent or past memory) can I recall enjoying such an entertaining, smile-inflicting, well-written piece of literature! The stories that unfolded within it's pages immediately transformed this Baby Boomer back to the 50's from whence I came, all-the-while laughing, cringing, relating to ALL the actions, emotions and fresh air simplicity of those pre-computerized, pre-technical days of (my) youth! The shenanigans of the Wood boys brought to mind on numerous occasions, my ma ...more

Rob Wood writes an outstandingly witty story of the shenanigans of three rambunctious brothers in the 1950's. I brought this book to read on a recent airplane trip and I laughed so hard that I had passengers and flight crew stopping in the aisles to inquire what was so funny.

When I returned from my trip, I passed my copy on to my husband to enjoy. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer earlier this year and has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiology. It gave me such pleasure to hear his unbrid

my type of humor with a smooth and direct writing style as if one was listening to a talkative friend telling about his youth escapades.
At the same time it reflects brilliantly the recognizable ambience at the time, me having grown up as a kid just a bit later in the late fifties.

What an amusing short story. I call it a short story because this is not a novel length book, but rather just snippets in time of a family that seemed to be pretty wild. And humourous, despite the trouble that Rob Wood and his three brothers got into, this book was definitely laugh out loud funny.

Rob Wood and his brothers had a penchant for getting in trouble. And with that trouble usually came the "lickins" from their father. Today we

I can't remember the last time I read a book that made me laugh til I cried. Which is what happened with each new "greatest" spanking. As I was attempting to finish it before book club, I was forced to re-apply my cried off mascara. I felt compelled to read an excerpt from it at book club for my friends to enjoy - which they did! Anyone who grew up in the good old days when children were disciplined, i.e. there were consequences to their bad actions/behaviors/choices will appreciate this book. I ...more

Boy, did this bring back memories! As I shared excerpts with my husband we were laughing and nodding in acknowledgement of similar experiences when we were in our "formative years." We thoroughly enjoyed the boys' exploits and could see the writing on the wall of their outcomes; I think our parents were all in the same club! I will say that I could empathize with Bullethead and Betty as we have two boys, now grown, who also had their fair share of adventures... I'm looking forward to Let's Scare ...more

Very, very well written. This story touches a wide range of emotions and summons up many memories of my own childhood. I could see it all unfolding - excellent. Thank goodness I read it before putting on makeup - I literally had tears streaming down my face I was laughing so hard. Your poor mom and dad!

This is a small book with big impact. A look back in time to the 1950's through the eyes of a now grown man. As a child Rob grew up living on a 365 acre ranch with his mom and dad, Betty and Bullethead, and his 2 younger brothers, Randy and Rich. At that time it was not uncommon for children to get a 'lickin' when they had misbehaved. Kids then didn't have video games and didn't watch hours of television. They actually went outside and played, usually games that were made up on the spot or based ...more

I was home in bed with a bad back and thought I would start reading the book. I couldn't put it down until it was completely finished and it left me wanting more. I could relate to the characters and their mishaps through my own family experience with my brothers growing up. I found myself laughing out loud and had to be careful due to my back issues. Rob sent me a copy of this book, and I must thank him! Rob, this book has become my 'happy place'! If those were the 5 Greatest Spankings of All Time, I'd hate (or rather, love) to hear about the ones that didn't make the cut for the book! While reading this book I yearned for the simpler life of days gone by - when kids played outside and made their own fun without the stagnant video gaming, mind numbing activities that kids worship today. Having 2 boys myself, I can just imagine what antics th ...more

First of all, I was offered this book to review. I read an awful lot, an inordinate amount; that's why I'm here. This has helped to tarnish my reading experience making me particularly critical, maybe you could say that I have become a book snob. I grow impatient fast because I expect a lot from a piece of work. Having said that, "The 5 Greatest Spankings of All Time" grew from promising to one great read. This author, Rob Wood, can write! He can tell a story and make you live it and be glad tha ...more

Thank you, Rob Wood, for sending me a copy of your book. What a perfect little gem! From the moment I began reading "The 5 Greatest Spankings of All Time" I had a big smile on my face. I truly enjoyed the misadventures of Rob and his two brothers as I could relate to them in many ways. I grew up in a family of six with two very daring brothers who would fit in perfectly in Rob's family. Rob cleverly describes the carefree nature of a time when children would use their imaginations and plan adven ...more

Great book! As I was reading, I was imagining that the author's children had just gotten into trouble and before receiving a punishment that the author's father stepped forward saying "Now wait just a minute, let me tell you what all your dad did when HE was a youngin'!" I wish I could have heard these stories recited outloud in real life. These tales went way beyond my expectations of typical childhood mischief.
The book reminds me of how my grandfather used to tell me "You're itchin' for a lic

I had to stop reading this book last night because I was laughing so hard. My wife was trying to sleep and I was shaking the bed with laughter. I don’t think I have ever had that happen before.

Rob Wood paints the picture of his childhood, growing up on a ranch in the 1950's. His tales of causing havoc provide a glimpse into the past and different time to be a child. The way he writes, builds you up to the point of each "Licken" and for each one I had to laugh out loud. My favorite “Licken” has t

I absolutely loved this book. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time, and would love to know how much of that was fiction and how much was based on actual events. It says in the beginning that all characters and events are fictitous but then goes on to say it is a memoir. I enjoyed this book so much, the children were outrageous in coming up with ways to entertain themselves which always ended up in a "lickin". My favorite being the chapter titled Cowboys and Indians, but I won't give anythi ...more

I was sent this book free from the author. It came in the mail yesterday, and I sat down to take it from the package. I opened the book to read a little about it, and before I knew it I was half finished. Finding it hard to put it down and leave those 3 mischievious boys, I had to sit there and finish it. it was well written with believable characters, and plot. I was brought in for a ride with those boys. It took me back to a time when I was growing up in the 40's and 50's. I remember the razor ...more

Wow! I can't believe these kids actually survived their childhood! I can understand why Rob and Randy got their "lickens," but poor little Rich seemed like a sweetheart.

There is something I don't understand though. The forward states that this is a memoir. Yet on the copyright page it reads:
"This book is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents are products of this author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons living or

I received this book from Rob as a gift.

Growing up in the '50's I certainly identified! What a simpler time, and we certainly could get away with a lot more ~ but some of antics of Rob and his brothers were a little more daredevil than I ventured!

This book was laugh out loud funny, and I laughed until my stomach hurt! I'm surprised his parents survived some of their shenanigans!!

I loved the stories that Rob shared in this book. But, what I'm wondering . . . there of course had to be more adventu

Pretty darned hilarious, if you ignore the fact that these men are all lucky to have survived their childhood - more due to their own shenanigans than from the lickins they earned because of them.

I wonder if the fact that they lived on a ranch helped them get into trouble as much as it prevented them from getting into it (with neighbors)... Just one of the great mysteries of the universe I guess. Regardless, and fun, quick read, that made me appreciate the relative calm of raising 4 girls - only

I absolutely LOVED this book. If you grew up in the 50's or 60's...ok even if you didn't grow up then, you still have to read this book. I was born in 1961 and being a girl, I didn't get into that much mischief. But...when all the cousin's got together, well, let's just say there were plenty of "Lickin's" to go around.

Thank you Rob Wood, I have spent the day enjoying your book and my own memories.

Reading "The 5 Greatest Spankings of All Time" totally took me away from the world we live in today. It was like a pleasant vacation to the place and time where I grew up. It made me laugh time after time while reminding me that our existence on this earth is precious and finite. Very well done! Magnum

I really loved this book. It was a very easy, light read but it had me smiling the whole time. Mr. Wood's stories of his brothers were so entertaining and frequently laugh out loud funny. It was a joy to read and one I'm pretty sure I'll read more than once.

It certainly brought back memories of the days when parents could discipline their children without some stupid agency calling it abuse! The tales of these kids, the hellraisers, I am suprized they lived thru all their adventures! It is a quick fun read and recommended to anyone who defied the normal well behaved route in childhood.

I have not laughed so hard in....oh, I can't remember when! This is a lovely little tale of brotherhood and growing up in a time where boys could just be boys, and catch the leather for it! I recommend this if you need a good laugh or just to reminisce about life of yesteryear. You wont be sorry.

this was a really fun book to read. it tells the true story of a kid and his 2 brothers during the 50's and what it was like to get a spanking and having had a great many adventures that caused havoc around the ranch they lived at wich caused his dad to give them the spankings. i hope rob writs more about the adventures of his childhood, the stories are charming.

Absolutely delightful! Having come of age in this time period, I was pleasantly surprised at the author's ability to transport me back to the era. I felt as though the characters were my childhood frineds and I eagerly shared their sense of adventure and resulting mischief. Bravo!
