Two years ago, Jandra Maxwell walked away from the secret Fairlight Society and started a new life in a quiet Texas town. When her former Ward, the dark angel Zeph, seeks her out and begs for her help, Jandra faces an impossible choice. She knows he can only offer her heartache, but she can’t turn her back on the only man she’s ever loved.
Zeph teeters on the brink of madness, pummeled by emotions his angelic blood once rendered him incapable of feeling. Driven to protect Jandra from a threat he can only glimpse in nightmares, he refuses to leave her side. As they explore the mystery of his recurring dreams, they discover the Fairlight Society has been keeping a terrible secret – one they’ll kill to protect.
Fighting for her life isn’t so easy when Jandra’s also fighting her heart. Her her inexorable attraction to Zeph may save them...or may damn them both.
Nia Shay is a reclusive weirdo who lives in a tiny concrete box in the middle of the Arizona desert. (No, seriously.)
In between dealing with mild OCD and an epic caffeine addiction, she finds time to mold the voices in her head into cohesive sarcastic remarks, and sometimes even a story or two. She has been penning such tales, almost all of them with a decidedly paranormal flavor, since the second grade.
Now that paranormal fiction is the "in thing," Nia has decided to overcome her extreme distaste for trends and jump on the ol' bandwagon. Join her on her harrowing journey through the twisted corridors of her own mind. That is…if you dare.
This book was amazing! I loved every word, every sentence, every chapter! It hooks you from the first page and doesn't let you go. Jade is the perfect heroine for this book. Combine her with Zeph- a seven foot tall Dark Angel Adonis that curls her toes and makes her want to kick him- and sprinkle in some Brax- a dream man turn reality who his own little mystery going on, with beautiful eyes and sexuality that radiates through the pages- and you get the perfect recipe for this novel!
Dark Angels Ward is fantastic. I can't say that enough, and highly recommend you buy this book!
Nia Shay's Dark Angel's Ward has most definitely confirmed my affinity for angel literature, but that being said I'm not sure Shay and I are a particularly good fit.Is it Shay's fault? No. As corny as it sounds it isn't her, its me. I didn't realize how extensively the story would be influenced by sexual tension and desire when I picked up the book and I wasn't entirely prepared to accept it.
I know I'll probably get bashed for this, but review is about opinion and the personal experience of a reader with a particular book so at least hear me out before you start judging. Sex in literature doesn't bother me at all, I read and enjoy romance as much as the next person. The thing is, I found myself increasingly frustrated that Jade's hormones overshadowed the themes that attracted my attention in the book description. I wanted and expected Zeph's madness, his intense devotion to Jade, the background on the Fairlight Society and Jade's internal conflict to take center stage. While all these elements are present, they were not as prominent as I imagined they would be. My rating is indicative of that disappointment, not Shay's talent nor the sexual nature of her story.
The telling itself wasn't what I expected, but it wasn't the only aspect of the piece that rubbed me the wrong way. The dialogue, both spoken and internal, left me wanting. Shay has a great sense of humor and I found most of the exchanges entertaining, but I also found that the steady stream of sarcasm spewed forth by Jade painted a very contrary, bitter and one-dimensional character. There really is something to be said for moderation and I think a lighter hand may have helped make her a more relatable and compelling protagonist. It might also help if such crass terminology as 'angel jizz' was avoided altogether. Maybe.
Nitpicky? Yes. Sorry folks that's just the kind of reviewer I am. I really liked the premise of Dark Angel's Ward. The role of the wardens, the nature of angels, the incorporation of incubi, Markus' mad experimentation with genetic manipulation and Jade's innate fear of losing herself to Zeph were all very well imagined. I wasn't sold on the execution, but the story itself is more than a little appealing.
On a basic level this is a big girl's 'Hush Hush'. Don't all rush at once though! The story is pretty cool, we've been here before but there are a few tweaks that really work - the problem is the delivery. The pace is all over the place and I think we are overloaded with plot in the first few chapters then left to tread water for the next 150 pages. The biggest issue though was our emotional, erratic and damned annoying heroine. We have a phrase her in the UK - Think cockerel, drop the 'erel' and add 'tease'. You'll know what I mean? So after the on/off/on/will she/won't she? When we actually get there the sex was about as fun as taking down the Christmas Tree!
I'm going to start this review by saying there was NOTHING I didn't like about this twisted little tale. From our smart, super snarky and fearless heroine; her amazing, somewhat frightening and complicated love interest/assignment, Zeph; her dream stalker (you'll just have to read it!); her co-workers and friends, the Twins, to the secretive and manipulative Society, where she serves as a Ward. Dark Angel's Ward is a fast paced thriller with non stop action, unpredictable twists and lots of romance...very complicated romance. It's hot and sexy...keeps you on the edge of your seat and always guessing and is full of dark humor- mostly courtesy of Jandra and the Twins. Throughout the story, Jandra isn't sure who to trust and as the reader, neither are we. This makes for a great game of cat and mouse, where you're not always sure who's the cat or the mouse. Add in the paranormal and you've got me hooked. I loved Nia's writing style. It flowed beautifully and had me enchanted start to finish. I didn't want it end. I got a bit snarky myself whenever I was forced to put it down. The characters are engaging, fun and refreshing. It's not all fun and games, there are some terrifying and graphic scenes, but Nia- and Jandra handles them with style and grace. At times like the train wreck you can't help but peek at, she keeps you entranced and emotionally bound to the very end. And lucky me...the journey continues in Ugly Like Me. I'm already diving in to the sequel...I'm so glad I didn't have to wait long for more of these amazing characters. I was missing them as soon I read the final page. This is a book I'll recommend again and again. I'm trying to keep this short and sweet. Ha ha, I know, but I could easily go on and on about Dark Angel's Ward...and Jandra and Zeph...and Brax...and...well, I think you get the idea. Race to your kindle, PC...whatever reading device you have, and get this little gem NOW.
It's amazing books like this that remind me why Paranormal Romance is my favorite genre. Dark Angel's Ward is a delightful, well written story that is absolutely gripping. Nia Shay is now a must have on my shelf- or E-reader, in this case. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and wished that I hadn't zoomed through it. It is an addicting book though; it's not one you'll be able to put down!
Dark Angel's Ward is a unique tale that is both interesting and entertaining. The plot focuses heavily on paranormal aspects- Angels, Nephilim, Demons, and Wards, complete with a secret society- and stands out among other angel stories. A lot of action takes place during the novel (don't worry, there's romance too!), so it feels more like a movie than a book. The book is suspenseful and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Each of the characters are fascinating and have the reader experiencing some strong emotion. I'd love to read more about them all. Of course, the two best characters are the two main ones. We have Jandra, or Jade, who is badass, intelligent, and strong. She's delightfully sassy and funny, making her the ideal female character. She's the female lead that most of us crave in a good story. Then we have Zeph, oh Zeph, "Mr. Hottie McHot Pants" himself. He's the tortured hero that every reader will fall in love with. The pair have explosive chemistry and have some rather steamy moments.
It's impossible not to fall in love with this story. I can't wait to read more by Nia. I highly recommend this book to any PNR lover that is looking for the next best thing!
A big thank you to the author for providing a review copy!
An amazing start to a new paranormal series from a new (at least to me) author. I was so engrossed in this book, I read it in less than a day (yes I slept a few hours-lol). It's a wonderfully written, emotional, exciting, adventurous, sensual and fun read that surprises you at every turn. It's the furthest from predictable that I've read in some time and I really enjoyed all of the surprises.
To believe or not to believe. That is one dilemma Jade finds herself in once Zeph returns into her life again. It's been two years and she has a different life. But cannot deny herself the feelings she still holds for him. They are a strong combination of love and hate. But she sees and senses changes in him that should not be. Could he be for real. Or is this a hoax to get her back into his life and his bed?
Together with some assistance from some great friends. They find out many truths about the Society and other paranormal's out there. There are still some things left to investigate. But together they will conquer all!
I'm looking forward to the rest in the series. I fell in love with many of the characters on the pages. The twins Cara and Sara are snarky, smart and funny. Also extremely loyal friends to Jade. Zeph is one hot dude and is determined to prove to Jade that he is for real. He has his own feelings and his heart belongs solely to her. Brax is another character that grabbed at me. Who can resist a good looking incubus? Not me that's for sure and the fact that he was on Jade's side gave him more brownie points ;)
Loved this book! It was written by a friend of mine and it was a very good read. At 586 pages it only took me 5 days to read and that is good speed for me. I loved the fact that it had adult scenes in it and they were very steamy. It had good twists and turns, many I could not see coming so that is great. I love Jandra and Zeph. I love the fact that they have a strong bond and would go to the ends of the earth for each other. I also liked the twins Cara and Sarah. I even liked Brax although he was creepy. It was a very intense love story and I cannot wait to read the next one. This was my first novel that I have read involving angels and it makes me want to read more. Good job Nia!
I absolutely loved this book, and had a hard time putting it down once I started it!!! The story was amazing and I loved getting to know the characters and seeing how the story played out. Nia is a very talented author who can pull you in, and make you feel the story and emotions as they unfold. I am so grateful that I read this book, and now consider myself a lifetime fan of Nia Shay. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience a great story, you won't be disappointed.
Angel novels are going through a popular phase right now, but Nia Shay throws out all the rules and redefines the word 'angel'. Her world and characters are incredibly well developed, as is the relationship between dark angel Zeph and his warden Jandra. I don't want to offer any spoilers, but I love all the main characters, one in particular who I hope will later get a story of his own. This is one series I'll be following from start to finish. A wonderful paranormal/romantic read! Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed this book. Had several twists and turns I did not expect and by the end of the book was thinking I'd love to have the second one ready to read. Great job Nia :) Keep on writing!!! You got yourself a new fan :)
Wow, this book is really entertaining. I laughed out loud on more than one occasion. The main character Jade reminded me of Fred the mermaid. From the MaryJanice Davidson series. This was a quick read for me, but it's because I didn't want to put it down.
What's a girl to do? I drew back my foot and kicked him in the stomach.
Well I can say that I wasn't quite expecting that.
This wasn't a horrible little book. I was quite happy to read it. I did like that things kind of just happened without much prelude to the actual happenings. But at the same time, it lacked a lot of explanation and character development. And in short: I'm still a little confused as to how things came about. Jandra was a tease. I did not approve of this; and I never do. She starts shit, gets Zeph all hot and bothered, acts like she wants him...and then stops. More than a handful of times. I was okay with the first couple, because she had a decent reason behind it. It was understandable, even if it is fucked up. But the reason this shit annoys me so much is because if it were to be the other way around, you know how women act. They get all butt hurt at the rejection, and can be down right nasty about it. But men are expected to be gentlemen about it. Wouldn't bother me if women were understanding about it too. And then there was this: Not that I'd been waiting on him to agree on anything--the heated response of his body told me all I needed to know. So...only men need to make sure it's okay to proceed, then? If he has a boner, then clearly, because all men are the same, it's all go! But not true for her, is it? He had her body screaming out for him, but he better be sure that's what she actually wants. Double standard, don't you think? For the most part I liked Jandra's attitude. Though she was a bit full of herself and bossy for my liking. For someone who didn't like to be ordered around, she sure had no problem bossing around others. And she wouldn't shut up long enough to hear a word from anyone else. Not very attractive. But she was funny. And a lot of the aspects of this book had me chuckling. It was just missing a few back stories, and elements to draw certain scenarios into place, and failed to give you a decent understanding of what was really going on in the book, and between the characters. I didn't know what to make of Zeph. I guess he was supposed to be eye candy or something. But I didn't get a real feel for what he really looked like, or what he was like as a character. Here's what I saw: A whipped little bitch. So, not very appealing. And Brax? He was unnecessary love triangle...that flopped hard core. There was not enough involvement with him. So she damn near fucked him in her dreams--not enough to make him worth the while of being in the book really. And the corruption wasn't conveyed enough to really accept. It was a great idea, the whole book was--it was different to most of the angel novels I've read yet--it just wasn't executed in a way to make this a fantastic read. But, like I said, it wasn't horrible. I liked it enough to see how the next one plays out.
i haven't read a fallen angel book in quite a time, and this book makes me want to read more.
i never been into a lengthy review, so this is gonna be quick. the book is about jade and zep. jade is a retired warden and zep is a fallen angel and her former ward, her only ward. when jade left the warden service, zep was assigned another warden but it didn't worked out and since then he was left without a warden. a fallen angel without a warden is quite dangerous, they could become unstable and gone 'crazy'. which is dangerous for them and humans. the story started with zep suddenly showed up in the shop where jade worked, in a bad state, which forced jade to help him by once again become a warden, very reluctantly.
the storyline runs smoothly, the background and past histories laid one by one as the story went on. there's several surprises a long the way and left dangly by the end of the book, which considering it's the first book of a series, it's perfectly normal and acceptable. there's several bumps along the way that i hope will be explained further, like jade's 'possesed state', ryphan and father marcus, but i assumed it'll be explored more thoroughly in future books. all in all, it's a good start of a series, with lots of potentials to explore and expand.
I'm actually struggling with what to say here. Its taken me a few days to finish reading this, but that has more to do with my family life rather than the readability of the book.
Nia Shay is a new to me author, this is the first time i have read anything she has written and now that i have i can honestly say i will be reading more of her work. In fact the next book i read will be her Ugly Like Me.
From the moment I started reading I was hooked. Jade and Zeph's relationship was awesome, I loved that she beat the cr@p out of him when he first showed up even though it was painfully clear that she still loved him, and their back story was revealed gradually rather than being dumped on you all in one hit which would have been too much to deal with. I really liked Brax and I really hope he shows up in later books, even if I'm not sure whether he his a 'good guy' or 'bad guy'.
As paranormal romances featuring Dark Angels/Fallen Angels go this is rather superb and is a definite must read.
Jandra is a manager for a gothic clothing store. One day her ex Zeph walks in and turns her world upside down. We quickly learn Zeph is a dark angel who is hell bent on repairing their relationship. I loved the characters and story line, but wish some of their habits were better explained. (This part contains spoilers, the drinking of blood really had me confused). But I loved the book overall! WaAR
I'm not liking the male character in this book especially when he starts of all whiny and stuff but don't get me wrong I love it when a guy falls on his knees in front of his woman but with Zeph...it was kinda lame.
