This to me was a Beauty and the Beast type story, rich city girl from privileged life meets poor Latin immigrant. Any way you put it, its a MUST READ!! It tells the story of an aging, walking Vogue catalog, Jewish-American princess that is competing for the coveted spot (her dream job!!)--a buyer for her place of business. But a chance meeting turns her world upside-down when she allows this Latin lover to "Strong-Arm" and sweet talk his way into not only her day, but her home, BED and soon she' ...more

I have been reading "An Unexpected Exile". I must say again that Sheryl Sorrentino is a GREAT writer! Arturo makes me so damn angry; the man is, in my opinion, immature and irrational, and just plain nuts. Ms. Sorrentino has made him so real that I have wanted to transport myself, and a few of my more powerful characters, into the author’s book in order to snatch this guy and work him over. I believe that a character is great when the reader is motivated to want to lay hands on him.

As for Risa,

An Unexpected Exile by Sheryl Sorrentino

I really enjoyed “An Unexpected Exile”. It’s a story for every woman who has ever gotten caught up in a magnetic love affair where sensuality is so rewarding that nothing else matters. Her lover’s allure overrides the warnings from her realistic father and friends. She disregards the signs that her lover is abusive and lying to her. It takes the ultimate betrayal from her lover to awaken her long-clouded better judgement.

It's also a profound story of cultu

This book was so well written that no matter how annoyed and frustrated I became with the characters I could not put this book down. It drove me crazy that Risa would acknowledge that Arturo was abusing her and treating her poorly over and over again and then find ways to excuse or justify his behavior. It was a shame to watch Arturo take advantage of Risa's search for love and passion as he repeatedly manipulated and abused her. The whole story I was routing for her Father and Friends to find a ...more

I will actually give this book a 3.5.. the subject can be a bit much for some, since it does involve a sexual attraction that hinges on abuse, but it is well written, the characters are very good, although frustrating & annoying.. Risa is a single woman hoping for love, along comes Arturo, a younger man escaping from political life in Nicaragua, settles in SanFran. CA, meets Risa on the bus, follows her, kind of like a lost puppy & it all unravels from there...It is intense, distrubing to some, ...more

A great follow-up to Later With Myself... I find Sorrentino's characters to be deep yet amusing. She's clever without being pretentious. Another worthwhile read from this author. I can't wait for her next novel!

An Unexpected Exile is a mostly lighthearted story about a mismatched couple who indulge a mutual sexual obsession while embroiled in a politically-charged culture clash. But it also deals with a much more serious issue: Domestic abuse.

The protagonist, Risa Weinberg, is not your stereotypical abuse victim. Self-centered, attractive, and financially independent, she is under no economic or social compunction to remain in a relationship with (much less marry) an abusive man. And yet, she stays wit

This is the second book I have read by this author. Again, I am very thankful she was able to send me a copy! This was a quick read for me. Right away I was drawn into the story by Risa who is a twenty nine year old hoping to someday be promoted to fashion buyer of Nordstrom where she works. She meets Arturo on her way to work one morning. They quickly become involved and their romance spirals out of control. I can not wait to read the next book from Sheryl! :)

Sheryl Sorrentino is the author of six very different novels: Later With Myself: The Misadventures of Millie Moskowitz (which recounts a neglected twelve-year-old’s devastating pregnancy); An Unexpected Exile (a romantic ride with Risa Weinberg, a 29-year old Jewish fashion merchandiser who is relentlessly pursued by a charismatic and slightly "off-kilter" Sandinista rebel); The Floater ...more
