This short book is all about the perils of young Jack as he tries to master the art of bike riding. Some early follies keep him from enjoying things, though his dad tries to show him that practice will help. After some wobbles and a little fall, Jack picks himself back up and begins the process again. Eventually, things work out and he wants the world to know that he is a great bike rider. Never have I wanted a short piece to end so much as I pushed Neo to read the entire book on his own. Phonetics and tried to remember sight words had me tugging on what little hair I have. However, while we both ended up frustrated, we made it. It can only get better from here, as I seek to create the next generation of Goodreads participants.
The topic is so relatable for young readers. They'll fill in the human interest that otherwise is (to me) conspicuously lacking from this formulaic reader.
Next, my disclaimer. I don't find the series of "Bob Books" to be pedagogically interesting. Not impressive as tools for learning. Maye worse, I really-really dislike the simplified style of illustration here. No soul!
Yet Jack does become a bike rider.
And the kids are reading... So, even though Shakespeare it ain't, FIVE STARS.
This level 1 reader from Scholastic is a great read for children. First I have yet to meet a child who has not wanted to ride a bike, second the book will help them with their reading and gives some good ideas for learning to ride. Join Jack as he wants to take off the training wheels and his father teaches him to ride.
There are so many great books in the BOB Books series from the leveled readers to the word kits. They are all loved by children and great tools for teaching and helping to stretch and strengthen young readers and their progressing abilities.
About the Level Readers The Leveled readers from Scholastic are a great way to introduce your child to reading. The levels are:
Pre1: ABC's & First Words Level 1: Sight words, words to sound out and simple sentences. Level 2: New vocabulary and longer sentences. Level 3: Reading for inspiration and information. Each book has a level rating, a grade level, a reading level, a lexile level and a word count on the back.
