Summary: A book for spiritual those training to be spiritual directors focusing on developing discernment and using a number of case studies to guide spiritual direction training.

The Discerning Heart is a book that was hard to track down. It is out of print and when I finally found a copy for my classes, I was sent (and charged) for two. I am ambivalent about the book. "Discerning Heart" is a practical, Ignatian guide to spiritual direction written with the director in mind. The first part of the book is an exploration of movements and counter-movements in Ignatius's own life, illustrated through re-tellings on his spiritual journey. The heart of the book is a series of case studies (including "verbatims") that helpfully illustrate St Ignatius's "rules for the discernment of spirits."
