Think of an early David Sedaris.... Love this slice of history from the Soo. It helps that it is my home town :) Remembered this book after reading Chaim Potok's, The Chosen and was able to track it down on eBay some time back. Love his description of Bayview, as it was the neighbourhood I grew up in. Explains a lot as to the reputation it had back in it's heyday. Highly recommend this to other's from the Soo or for those just looking for a good memoir. Apparently the CBC did a short run by the ...more

Morley Torgov's reflection on growing up Jewish in the relatively small centre of Sault Ste. Marie in the 1940s makes from a enjoyable read, doused with the humour and pain of someone looking back and wrestling with identity and destiny. Torgov's relationship with his father is particularly dominant as he finds his way with a dour faced father, which leaves the reader impressed with the impudence of the child and with the tolerance and patience of the father. ...more

Morley Torgov BA, LLB, DLitt is a Canadian novelist, humorist and lawyer. He remains a partner in the Toronto-based legal firm Olch, Torgov, Cohen LLP.

He studied law in Toronto at Osgoode Hall, formally becoming a lawyer in 1954. Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 1990.
