Through My Eyes: a story of Hope

4.58  ·  Rating details ·  38 ratings  ·  18 reviews Very few combatants, also known as grunts, have been willing or able to share their view of the life-long memory that still keeps them wondering if the dreams and nightmares will ever end. This is an expensive story to write in terms of personal emotion; to walk through that year again so others can sense, feel and understand what it’s ...more

Book review is due on my website soon. In the meantime, this is certainly a book worth reading, with one caveat. I found Witworth's style of writing engaging and captivating. There is nothing highbrow or literary in his approach to describing his youthful enlistment and military service in Viet Nam. Such an approach is appealing to the reader because it allows us to stop and think about exacctly what has been described, without that experience playing second fiddle to a more literary narrative. I ...more

Engaging, relevant, draws you in so you are a part of what Bob is going through. Gripping in that you feel like you are adjusting to this new and unwanted experience with him. One can put themselves into his situation and you come away imagining how you would have responded in the same circumstances. I like the perspective of an ordinary guy explaining with ordinary language what it is like to live an extraordinary adventure. His honest approach to dealing with the horror of war is inviting and ...more
Bob brings the Viet Nam war to life in vivid detail as he recalls his time serving our country during this tumultuous time. He also tells how he found the hope to face danger and keep on going. Bob's Christian faith is what saw him through and his desire is to share that hope with others.

Reading this book taught me just what a service member goes through when faced with being sent halfway around the world and when facing combat from which they may or may not return. There are some lighter

This book was an excellent read. One that I read cover to cover in just about one sitting. As a 1967 draftee into the US Army I found this book written through the eyes of a soldier in the trenches most interesting and well written. Most Vietnam vets during that period experienced war in many different ways. The author here has been able to document his experiences and how his faith seen him through this horrendous war. I highly recommend this book specially for our younger generation who only ...more

Many of us have loved ones who have served our country faithfully in combat, yet are never willing or able to share with us what it was like. Bob Whitworth lifts the veil of his experience in war: the daily grind, the hilarious and the terrifying.

I appreciate his honesty, his willingness to share the comaraderie, his learning curve as he becomes adept at war, even the heartache - all without playing the hero. It's a true story that allowed me to walk his journey and see war through his eyes.

Excellent book about a man's service to our country in Vietnam. This book will bring up all kinds of emotions, and a new respect for Bob, and others that served in this war. It was so real, Bob did an excellent job putting the reader right next to his side, feeling his emotions, and knowing after reading this book I myself will never be the same. My husband was one of the men in this book, and I now feel so lucky to have this story told. I know what these men went through now, so many wives ...more

This is a unique book about war. There is plenty of action but not blood and guts and profanity like most war stories. It is an honest picture of what being a combat soldier is all about. Very insightful and a great read for families of soldiers (parents, spouses, significant others)who will appreciate learning what happens to soldiers to cause them to come home they way they do after being involved in combat situations. It is also something that young men from Junior High on up will really ...more
I could never begin to imagine what it would be like to be in a war let alone Veit Nam. This book gives you a front line look at what is was like to be there every day. To constantly wonder if you would encounter snipers as you were wading through rice fields with nowhere to take cover. Wondering if you would see your loved ones again. Wondering how through all of the chaos and fear and people all around you losing their lives, you could make it through this day and keep on going. Learning that ...more

This does more than any other book I've read or movie I've seen about the Vietnam War to give a "grunt" or foot-soldier perspective on the horrors, stupidities, fatigues, deprivations, fears, even moments of laughter, and many other matters and issues encountered first-hand in war but not all that well covered by war correspondents and--until recently--not much spoken about by Americans who were there in the 1960s and 1970s. I recommend it and am grateful that Bob wrote it.

Both me and my husband (Ret. USAF) read this and thought it was a really good book, with the map my husband was able to show me where his Dad served as well. Surprisingly my husband read it in 2 days and that says a lot! He usually takes a while to finish a book. I always have had a lot of respect for our troops and I can't even imagine going through that myself and come out of it sane, especially coming home to people who seemed to be against them, I just don't get that!

I really enjoyed reading Through My Eyes: A Story of Hope. As a Vietnam combat veteran, 1st Infantry Division 1968-69, I have read many first hand accounts and this rates as one of the best! If you have served in Vietnam or are interested in Vietnam you should read this book! It is well written and flows well.

This was an excellent memoir of the Vietnam Era. Whitworth did a solid job drawing the reader in and letting them feel the fear and subsequent numbness that strikes combat soldiers. From the '55 Chevy to forging on in a battle line, the events drew the real picture of the kids of America during a strange time in our military history.

Thank you for sharing such a trying and defining time.

Sorry to see that Sonny has such a shallow opinion of what he read, maybe he should have been there to experience it first hand like the rest of us.
Thank You Bob, it brings it home to those who were there.

I did not think that I was going to laugh so much while reading a book on the Vietnam War. I literally laughed till I cried. I passed the book on to my dad who also served in the Vietnam War. He thoroughly enjoyed Bob's account.

Phenomenal book! It was very inspirational. Everyone should read this book and experience the author's story of triumph through extreme hardships as God's hand protected him and his platoon.
