In This Day with the Master, author Dennis Kinlaw brings a unique perspective, rich with life experiences to the stories of Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Joshua, King David and King Solomon, and others who have looked for God in times of quiet solitude. Through their successes and failures we learn how to spend each one of our days with the Lord.
This is an excellent devotional Dr. Kinlaw shares his heart and knowledge in this devotional. It is the best daily devotional. Dr. Kinlaw was president of Asbury College when I was a student there and I can just see him as he shared so many times in chapel and this book is a culmination of his sermons. He was a Hebrew scholar and loved the Old Testament. He shares deep insights into so many Old Testament scriptures and makes the Bible come alive. This book has Scripture and then a short devotional from that Scripture
Scriptural, Deep, Understandable, Practical, and Very Enjoyable
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have used this as one of my key devotionals for many many years and as a vital key resource in many of the sermons I’ve written. The author is profound, yet deeply practical. And his love for Jesus and for the Word of God spills over on every page. I am so grateful for the privilege of having this book.
Incredible book. It was even more meaningful to me as Kinlaw holds a building at Asbury University, and his journey of faith, dedication, and lifetime commitment to Christ encouraged me in countless ways. This has also been a precious book to connect with others through. My dad and I read this together almost every morning before I left for school.
I like to pick one (or more) annual devotionals to read through each year. Specifically, these devotionals serve as my reading while I brush my teeth each morning, setting the spiritual tone for my day (and keeping me from scrolling my phone at this time). This was my devotional for 2023, and it is an excellent read! Each day begins with a verse or brief passage from Scripture, followed by a page-long devotional that may or may not correlate with the daily Scripture. The readings are theologically rich, pulling insights and application from personal stories and Biblical passages, and Kinlaw’s passion for the Lord and for sharing the Gospel is evident on every page. I enjoyed the diversity of content and Kinlaw’s deep Biblical understanding.
What kept this from being a 5-star read for me was the lack of continuity, organization, or themes; the daily readings are random, and though I appreciated the surprise element that this brought to each day’s reading, I would have liked a more streamlined reading approach. That said, this is a very solid devotional and an excellent choice if you are still looking for a book of this sort to enliven your spiritual life in 2024.
These devotional readings were culled from Dr. Kinlaw's many years of preaching. These wonderful snippets from his sermons bear reading and re-reading.
A sample from the September 20th reading: "The greatest enemy to fruitfulness in my life is my own way. If I let Christ purge me and cleanse me so that I am wholly his, then the Spirit can begin to shape my life so that it conforms to his master design. Do you know what it means to belong to God completely? If you hold on to even a small corner of your right to yourself, you will destroy all that he wants to do in you and with you. Once Christ has given us a clean heart, he can give us the faithfulness and fruitfulness for which we long."
I usually read this at night before I turn out the light alongside the related scripture passage. I enjoy his thought provoking devotions, which for me are fresh and insightful.
