Dragons and Nightmares is different in style and treatment than anything Bloch has ever written. Here, a sardonic sense of the absurd has been added to the author's unique kind of fantasy. In this book you will meet such rare beings as Sir Pallagyn of the Black Keep, Herman the Eager Dragon, Simpkins the Toothless Vampire, Jory the Werewolf, who wears dark glasses to count ...more

Bloch's works have often a note of humour to them, but the pieces included in Dragons and Nightmares focus directly on the comical. I'm going through my shelves, adding book to Goodreads, and I stumbled across this long forgotten signed first edition of an obscure Robert Bloch book. And I'm have not even read it! It appears to be comic fantasy written in the style of Damon Runyon and Thorne Smith. In other words, quite a departure for Bloch's usual mysteries and horror. Need to read it soon!

Wasn't expecting this to be a comedy. The young Horror Hound in me was disappointed by that, but I still liked the book.

Grandi racconti dove il sarcasmo e l'ironia la fanno da padrone. Impossibile negarlo: qualunque tematica o genere affrontasse Robert Bloch, e per qualsiasi media, gli riusciva alla grande.

Robert Albert Bloch was a prolific American writer. He was the son of Raphael "Ray" Bloch (1884, Chicago-1952, Chicago), a bank cashier, and his wife Stella Loeb (1880, Attica, Indiana-1944, Milwaukee, WI), a social worker, both of German-Jewish descent.
