2.5 stars. Shortly after buying this book I read the description more closely and thought it sounded dark and grim. And while Quinten has been spending years wallowing in bitterness and self-pity, it actually was not dark. However, it was not light, romantic, or action-packed either. The beginning of the book introduces us to Quinten, and Caff/Saff joins his ship. Then we start getting the flashback chapters, which were too many for me to enjoy. I prefer no more than a very infrequent 1/2 page o ...more

Quinten’s Story is a bit of a change for KS Augustin. Her books are usually romances but while Quinten’s Story has a romance in the past the book is pure Science Fiction/ Space Opera. Here is the Blurb from the book:

Quinten's Story is a pure Science Fiction/Space Opera that takes place far in some distant post-first contact future. Quinten was once the leader of a small resistance, but has lost his idealism, his direction, his friends, and almost everything except his will to live.

At first I felt like part of the story might have been told in a prequel I had missed, but I soon realized that much of the first two-thirds or so of the book is spent in flashbacks explaining how Quinten came to be the man he is,

Quinten's Story is that most unusual of science fiction books in that it is very much character-driven instead of hardware-driven. Quinten and Caff become increasingly complex as we learn more of their backstories as the book progresses. The main story itself moves quite quickly, with plenty of action, and the resolution leaves room for sequels. I enjoyed K.S. Augustin's writing style, which in many ways reminds me of C.J. Cherryh. All in all, a very good read. I received a complimentary copy of ...more
