I can’t say I “finished” this book, per se, because it’s not that kind of book, but this is the book i used with my drum instructor and found it fantastic for the intended purpose.

A stupendous book reviewing the very fundamentals of Jazz, from melodic accentuations, to comping and embellishments. It is a tremendous guide to improvisational techniques, and reviews numerous styles: breakbeat manipulations, Afro-Cuban 12/8 Polyrhythmic Bembe, and even Samba. There is fantastic sheet music, virtually always implementing the triplet subdivision.

An excellent book for the drummer interested in jazz. Of course, nothing substitutes for pure experience in playing the music itself, and listening as well! Luckily, Riley covers these in here.
The exercises he writes are great and have multiple applications because they are simple.
Covers all the basics, a great starting point.
