Waking up dead was just the beginning of her problems. Lucy’s death is about to become the greatest adventure of her life.
Sarah started her obsession with reading at an early age, often sneaking BabySitter Club and Nancy Drew books into math class. She would read any book she could get her hands on. Her love of reading quickly evolved into a love of writing and stories began to pour out of her.
She grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with a degree in English, and taught eighth graders to love reading as much as she does for several years. She currently resides in Pittsburgh with her husband and daughter.
Sarah's debut novel, AWAKEN, released in January, 2012. Other novels include AVENGE, ATONE, ECHO OF AN EARTH ANGEL, INHALE EXHALE, THE SECRET CRUSH, and NEVER GONNA TELL.
Awaken is one of those books that quietly sneaks up on you and you have no idea what has happened. I want to give a HUGE thank you to AToMR Blog Tours for touring this book and allowing me to be a part of it. If not for them I would have never heard of this book and that is such a tragedy because this book is a MUST READ for the Paranormal Genre.
In Awaken we meet Lucy Donovan. She is in her senior year of college and is excited to be graduating and moving on in the real world. That is until she is killed by a drunk driver. When she awakes she is in a different place and is not sure how or why she is there. She soon learns that she is about to embark on a new life as a Patronus which is a Guardian of Spirits. She will have to deal with crazy ghosts, uncontrollable spirits, angels, and vampires.
Man what is a girl to do with this new life. She did not ask for it but was rather born with it and she needs a lot of guidance and direction. With her team by her side she is able to learn what she needs to to help these spirits along. To add to her growing dose of crazy she has a team mate Max and he is just the perfect set of everything. She soon finds herself having feelings for him. But what is a girl to do when she has so much responsibility on her shoulders. Will she be able to fill her new role? Will she be a good Patronus? What will happen between her and Max?
Come along for the greatest paranormal ride of your life! Ms Ross draws you in and keeps you there to very end!
Lucy is headed out for a weekend of sun, sand and surf before she graduates college. But not long into the trip a drunk driver ends her life in a horrific car crash. Weird thing is she wakes up. But what she wakes up to is not her old life, but a new one. She is now a Patronus and its now her job to help guard spirits until they are to go to their final destination.
Lucy learns that someone she was very close to will soon need guarding. So with the help of her new family; Cassie, Max, James and Adam help her train. Will she be able to protect this person and herself from the soul stealing vampires? Not only that, Lucy keeps wondering why she has such a strong connection to Max. Anytime she is around him, she melts. She thinks the feeling is mutual for him too until he starts pulling vanishing acts. Little does she know that there is history between them that is old as time itself…literally!
Awaken was such a good book. I laughed at times with this book (‘crap on a cracker’ is now a fav phrase for me) and I even cried towards the end of the story (my heart was just broken!) Ross did an excellent job with her debut book and I really look forward to more and more from her. And if you don’t already believe in soul mates, read Awaken and you just might!
I generally like fiction meant for young adults. But this book was not one of them. There were a few typos/grammatical errors which were minor, but bugged me. And the writing wasn't the best. Things that bothered me about the book include: There were too many references to name brands and pop culture. The world they lived on wasn't believable to me and neither were the characters. Plus the main character was frustratingly stupid with her choices.
It didn't make sense to me that the 'queen' was so caustic to Lucy. And then Lucy kept saying things to the effect of 'that is so just like the queen' when she only knew the lady for several hours. Then just the overall immaturity of the tone of the book bothered me. Lucy, the narrator/heroine was supposed to be graduating college around the start of the book - so 22ish, maybe a bit younger if she did things in a hurry - but her attitude and dialogue seemed more along the lines of a young teenager to me.
I could go on, but it's not really worth my time. This book may appeal to younger people, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. I did finish it, and there are books I haven't been able to because they're so bad. So I guess the book could be worse.
Loved the characters and the world she created. Very unique and different. I was intrigued the entire time and never had a dull moment.
I do hope that Max and Lucy can have some together time in the next book. Especially after that ending! Can't wait for them to explore that. Max's protectiveness was awesome.

Review 5 out of 5
Lucy Donovan is on her way to celebrate her upcoming graduation from college, when a horrific accident with a drunk driver ends her mortal life. She wakes up in a strange place to find out that she has a new destiny: to become a Patronus (a guardian of spirits). Trying to adjust to her new environment, Lucy will find herself going up against spirits who don't want her help, vampires wanting to steal the souls she and others are guarding and even a stuck-up British royal. To further complicate matters, she feels a growing connection to one of her team mates, Max. His behaviour leaves Lucy confused and intrigued to say the least. Waking up dead is the least of her problems, but it is the beginning of the greatest adventure of her life.
I'm extremely grateful that I won this book in a swag competition! I wasn't sure what to expect, but boy it didn't disappoint! I loved it! As I began to read Lucy's story, I became immersed in her world. Sarah has created a fantastic adventure/romance. I love her style of writing, and I could easily imagine the characters in my head. Lucy is mature for her age, which is understandable as you get to know her. She is definitely feisty, and does not back down from situations. This tends to get her into trouble, but she just keeps coming out swinging! Her team mates are a great ensemble, and compliment her hot-headedness. Hmm Max! What can I say! He's gorgeous! *fanning oneself!*. Mind you, James and Adam aren't too far behind either! There is only one other girl on the team, Cassie. She's just as feisty as Lucy, but she is more experienced, and is the first friend Lucy makes in her new life. I recommend this book if you want to go on a fantastic adventure. I am now looking forward to reading book two: Avenge, which is due to be released in late summer/fall this year. - Lynn Worton
Lucy Donovan is a college student out for a fun weekend with friends to celebrate her graduation right around the corner. A celebration that never came thanks to a drunk driver. She was happy and excited one minute and the next, waking up only to find out she was actually dead and that she had a whole new destiny ahead of her! One more important the she could ever imagine possible! When Lucy wakes up from her life and into another realm she learns that she has been chosen to be something bigger then she could of ever imagined...Something very few are selected for, to protect the souls of the dead from the evil of Vampires and werewolves! These souls have to be protected until they're judgment day at all cost! As if that was not enough for her to cope with and try and understand she also has strong feelings for a member of her team, Max. She can not comprehend what it is she's feeling or why she has such a strong pull towards this man she just met! When Max approaches Lucy with the news that a very important soul to her is about to be released Lucy must quickly train and meet the requirements made to allow her to guide and protect this soul...But, the vampires already know who she is and find her a serious threat. She has powers beyond what most do in the realm that have been there for hundreds of years but will it be enough to save the most important soul in the world to her? Will she learn what it is she feels for Max or why she feels it?
Review: This book captivated me from the very first couple pages! I instantly thought hmmm...well this is a interesting start...and I could not wait to finish it! I loved the twist in it and the fact that even there was a little romance it was not the only story in this book! The reason behind they're amazing pull is captivating on it's own!!! However this book leaves you wanting more and your mouth hung open at the end wanting to know what happened next! You may even find yourself trying to make the next pages appear even though they don't exist! I really look forward to the continuance of this story to find out how well Lucy will grow and where her relationship will lead her! Thank you Sarah M Ross for this wonderful book! 5 Stars!
When Lucy dies and wakes up to find out she is now a Patronus, destined to protect the souls of the dead from vampires, werewolves and fae, she is a bit apprehensive. She warms up to the idea fairly quickly once she meets Max, with whom she has an instant attraction to, and the feeling seems to be mutual. She trains hard, and is determined, stubborn, hardworking and sometimes rash, but a fantastic female character. This book isn't like anything you have read before, it will make you laugh, cry, and cringe. I was in love with the characters almost instantly. You get to meet some of the other Patronuses, such as, Queen Elizabeth (kind of grumpy and uppity), Amelia Earhart (awesome and very nice), Anne Frank, I mean it's fantastic how she incorporates these iconic figures into her story. A lot of old legends about vampires, werewolves and fae are also changed up in this book which made it all the more interesting to me. As Max and Lucy become closer, she knows that him and the others aren't telling her something and it turns out it's a biggie. Lucy also finds out she is super powerful, maybe more so than anyone else and they haven't tapped into all that she is capable of yet. But, her rash decisions will get her and the ones she loves into some bad situations that may not be easily resolved. I love that she is still a flawed character, she is strong, but still has her human attributes. This book was a no put downer for me. I read it cover to cover in one sitting. First 5 star review for me in a while. If you haven't read it, get it now, you are missing out on a FANTASTIC book.
This book is hard for me to rate, I'd like to start that way. The premise is great, the author's imagination lovely, and the afterlife of course is fascinating. The first half of the book had me. Lucy is a bit immature but dying and being thrust into another realm can cause even the best of us to devolve but by the time we get into what is to become her first mission I was grimacing in parts. The way the other Patronus (spirit guides to some) take her juvenile tantrums is unbelievable. I won't say more for fear of spoilers. Don't get me wrong, the book was an entertaining read and there was a part that brought tears to my eyes which tells me Ms. Ross is a talented writer. This particular book, maybe her first, felt rushed and where we might have believed some of the hard to stomach details with some more fleshing out of the story she chose to blow past in her hurry to get to the end. The second one (cliffhanger so yes, there will be another) would be a curiosity for me as we all get better with experience and I would love to see Ms. Ross take that one next step from solid to impressive, I know she has it in her.
Wow...I can honestly say that this debut book by Sarah M. Ross caught me completely by surprise! I was a hesitant buyer and reader...but wanted to give this author a chance to show me a different view of the paranormal genre. The "Patronus" aspect really gave me pause, because all I could think of was Harry Potter knock-off.
Well-this author presented a surprisingly new outlook to paranormal books and hooked me right in! The characters, the various realms between the living and the dead and the cliffhanger of an ending definitely has me anxiously waiting for book 2 in this series.
If you like paranormal books that throw in vampires, the alpha and omega, Patroni and religion...then this book is for you! Great job Sarah M. Ross!
Holy cow! I settled in for this book after setting up an Author Event with Sarah & figured it'd be a normal 'review' book. I didn't expect to give up sleep to finish it, & immediately download books 2 & 2.5 so I could keep going. Awaken was unique, fast paced, action packed, intriguing & full of heart. I was very pleasantly surprised and can't wait to read more! -Full review to come
One of the best books I have read in awhile. I received a ebook copy to review and I couldn't put my nook down. Great characters and the plot was genius. The ending was fantastic...I can't wait for the next book.
What a great story! I love the idea of our souls being transported and having a guide, then to them being protected until a decision is made. Plus add in some supernatural beings and a love story of true soulmates! Can't wait for Avenge!
I was completely sucked in by this book. It's well written and engaging. Unfortunately, the end (which leads into book 2) wasn't my cup of tea. Others may enjoy it though depending on their tastes.
This is a great book! Lucy is a girl on her way for a weekend away with her best friend to celebrate their upcoming graduation from college. Her last memory is of being in the car singing and thinking about her life and the next thing she knows she opens her eyes and has no idea where she is or what happened. She looks around and sees a small group of people in the room that she does not recognize. She questions who they are and where she is and they introduce themselves (they are Max, Cassie, Adam and James) and explain what happened to her. It turns out a drunk driver hit the car she was in and she was killed. They explain that her soul has been chosen to do a specific job- to be a Patronus. A Patronus’ job is to protect the souls of people who pass away and to help them reach their final destination. They explain that souls must be protected from evils such as vampires and werewolves. As the story unfolds Lucy learns what is needed to do the job of a Patronus (the training involved) and she takes on the job of protecting one soul she does not want to lose- her sister’s. Even though the training is exhausting both, physically and mentally, Lucy trains hard and does very well. She takes on vampires in a fierce battle to save her sister. From the start, she is drawn to one of the other Patronus- Max. Max is gorgeous- his hair, his eyes, his dimple- Lucy loves them all and cannot stay away from him. She feels drawn to him and so happy and relaxed in his presence and she does not understand why. When he pulls away, she feels empty and lost. It is evident that Max and Cassie know why this is but they keep from telling her. At the very end of the book, we find out the reason.
This is Sarah’s first book and I was very impressed. It was well-written and easy to read. Lucy is such a sweet, strong, determined girl and Max is so sweet to her. She could have very easily not dealt well with the path that has been chosen for her but she accepts it and handles it well. I loved the attraction/pull between them. Since we do not know the nature/reason for their attraction until the end and I couldn’t wait to find out what it was, I could not put this book down. My only complaint about this book was that it is too short!! I am patiently awaiting book 2. I want to learn more about the connection between Lucy and Max and I want to see where their relationship goes. I also want to read more about Lucy’s job as a Patronus as the story goes on. A definite must read!!
Awaken by Sarah M. Ross is a fast paced book that begins off strong. From there, it only gets better. Lucy Donovan is a head strong female character. She is stubborn and determined to succeed. That is probably my favorite thing about her.
It's hard to determine the most appropriate way to describe this book. One thing I can say is that it is a fresh take on vampires, guardians, ghost, and angels among other paranormal beings. Because the Patronus are unlike any other type of fantastical being that have been frequently explored as of late, it would be unfair of me to compare Awaken, book one in the Patronus series, to other books in the genre of YA Paranormal. Another thing I can say about Ross' book: It's definitely exciting. The 195 pages of the book were not used in vain. As I delved further into the novel, each page left me wanting more and more, and the unsuspected cameos of historical figures left me filled with laughter and intrigue.
Besides the actual plot of the novel, another aspect I enjoyed was the back story. Awaken revolves around Lucy Donovan, a young woman at her prime. What I like about it is that Lucy starts off the story in her last year of college. More than often authors of books in the young adult genre set their characters in a stereotypical high school environment. Sarah M. Ross does a good job of portraying a relatable YA character, who while still young and filled with vigor, has a bit more maturity; one that everyone can feel for.
Besides Lucy, there is a huge array of characters to love. Max, especially, is crush worthy, and faithfully loyal, but mysterious at the same time. Cassie is animated and brings fun into the novel, while Adam and James, though very different personality-wise, contribute widely to the reader's opinion of the novel.
In order to truly understand the role of the supernatural squad of the Patronus, you'd have to read the novel, and I'd definitely recommend it.
Awaken is a novel that will send you from happy to worried in just minutes. It's a book that will leave you aching for the next in the series. If you have read my entire review, you still wouldn't get how good this book is. I can not seem to do it justice. Lucy's death certainly made for an exciting afterlife.
If there is something about this book that struck out at me the most, it would probably be its similarity to Croak by Gina Damico. Many of the details of the world build in Awaken are either identical or very similar to the hilariously snarky Croak. Although I love Croak with a burning passion and can't dream of a single book about reapers comparing to its gory grim reaper glory, Awaken has its own quirks and charm that made it a fun read.
Awaken begins right off the bat with Lucy dead. Yup, no lag time between car accident and resurrection as angel, it's a smooth entrance to allow the story instantly grab attention, and it works. As I was reading Awaken, the fast-paced, exciting pace of this book instantly hooked me and left me dangling while I was away. It's just one of those reads that keeps a person pacing back and forth for what decisions and revelations will come out to add to the already daring plot.
Unfortunately, what also struck at me was the ridiculous love story between Lucy and Max. By now, as a YA reader, I'm used to insta-love. But this was too much! The lovebirds go on a "should we admit that we like each other" by page 40. My feeling was like, "what in the world did I miss in the past 10 minutes?" The extreme insta-love was too much for me, causing me to kind of roll my eyes over all of the so-called romantic moments and Lucy's mooning over Max.
When compared to Croak, this book isn't as satisfactory of a read. The romance is rushed at such a fast pace, the characters felt a bit unreal and unrelatable, and the book, overall, felt a tad bit immature for a book with a college student protagonist and many characters well above the 500 year old line. Perhaps if the book was longer than 206 pages, then it would be able to gradually build up intensity and emotions better. Despite my complaints, I cannot deny that I really enjoyed reading Awaken to my surprise.
In Awaken you’re thrown straight in to things when the main character, Lucy dies on the first page! It’s quite an introduction to the story!
I loved Awaken. For me it was one of those books that I just wanted to keep reading because I was just so engrossed in reading about Lucy and her new (after)-life. There was always something happening, a lot of action, and I just didn’t want to be left hanging to find out what
What I liked is that the author really took her time to set up the story. We got lots of detail about Lucy’s new world, the people she met who were to be her new friends and her work team and also about Lucy’s role in all of this. It was really interesting to read the author’s take on all things related to the after-life in Awaken. It’s not something that I can recall reading about in a boom before and I enjoyed it.
I loved Lucy. She was so strong-minded and handled everything that was thrown at her so well. She did have the occasional wobble and maybe wasn’t so strong in those moments but without throwing a spoiler out there I think those wobble moments were justified.
Max was the love interest in Awaken and he was just a sweetheart. Completely devoted to Lucy pretty much from the moment she recovered from her death and woke up as a Patronus. I could totally see why Lucy would feel so strongly for him so quickly, even if it wasn’t for the other connection they had.
Some of the things that happened to Lucy in Awaken were C.R.E.E.P.Y!!! Yikes, when a certain something happened about a quarter of the way through I was nibbling away at my nails wondering what the hell was going to happen to her and what the outcome would be!
So, all in all I really loved Awaken. It had great characters, great story, romance, action, and an original (for me anyway based on what I’ve read before) take on after-life. It was well written and has made me eager to read more of Sarah M. Ross’ work in the future.

Waking up dead is the least of her problems, but it is the beginning of the greatest adventure of her life.

So for a number of reasons, this book just kept on getting pushed back on the list. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Ross this past weekend at a local book signing event. She was super nice and signed a book for me. I felt like after such a really cool meeting, I owed it to myself to read this first book in the Patronus series.
Let me start by saying that this book has one of the STRONGEST female characters I have ever seen. Lucy is so determined, so strong, so everything!! I admire how she was written to show that side of her, while also still be emotional and connected to people.
I felt like I couldn't stop thinking about this book - even when I had to take breaks from it for those mundane LIFE things like sleeping, eating, working, cleaning....LOL. This book was amazing with a slice of awesomesauce on the side!!
Lucy's support cast was amazingly written and brought to life as well. Cassie - the bubbly roommate...I have such visions of what she would look like in my head. Her quiet, but obviously caring, boyfriend, Adam...such an interesting pairing!! James, the "boss" as I refer to him in my head. But...the boss that cares about his team so greatly!!
And then....there's yummy Max. What else can I say!??!? His physical appearance is described oh so beautifully. His obvious feelings for Lucy were so vivid....just wait until you see what happens with them!! The explanations of that alone are worth the wait.
All in all - I truly enjoyed this book. I can't wait to tackle Avenge!!! Especially after that oh so lovely Cliffhanger that we were given.
This book was definitely unique. the plot is something i haven't ever heard before. If you think this is going to be centered on angels and heaven you are mistaken. this book is about the patronus, the guides for souls. they make sure everything runs smoothly so that the souls can get to heaven without interference from werewolves, vampires or fae. the main bad guys in this story are the vampires, they collect souls to stay alive. When our main character, Lucy, wakes up from a car crash she meets Adam, Cassie, James and Max. when they tell her she's died and has been chosen to be a Patronus she thinks there crazy but after somethings happen that she can't explain any other way she believes them. While training to start her career as a Patrouns with her team she has a run in with a vampire that ends in tragedy. through out the whole novel she has a instant connection to Max and he is a constant source of comfort when things go wrong. The ending was intense and when you finally got answers to some questions new ones would come along. This book was fantastic and i highly recommend it. I can't until I can get the next one.
Lucy was on her last vacation from college life when a drunk driver took all of that away. Lucy awakened as part of the Patronus world. A group of strong souls that have earned the right to go fight for souls and protect them from other things that lurk in the shadows. Training is grueling to prepare for her assignments. Luckily she has been taken in by some great friends and one super dreamy hunk named Max. Only thing is the closed age gets to Max , the more she feels him pulling away.......and no one will tell her why ! For the moment Lucy must put all this aside because her first mission has arrived.....and it is her baby sister. Different type of guardian angel /spirit guide story. I liked the references to people from the past. Who wouldn't want to meet Amelia or Queen Elizabeth I. The story is also full of action. I would have loved to see Lucy trying to make those and her a little more hip to this century for licks. Overall a great read and well worth your time
Wow what an absolutely amazing debut book. I totally fell in love with the original plot and remarkable characters. Characters that will have you laughing, cheering them on and crying for them. Yes this is a surprisingly awesome book that made me feel I was right along side these people as they battle supernatural beings, fall in love and have heart wrenching moments. Also look for some amazing side characters to pop in that leave you in shock over who they are. I only had one problem with this book. It ended and had me begging for more. Sarah M. Ross has written a book i am sure will be a favorite to many. I look forward to reading more in this series.
I loved this story!!! This story is about a girl named Lucy, one minute shes singing happily with her friend on a trip to the beach and the next she is waking up in a room with people she has never met. They tell her she died and is one a rare few to be chosen as a patronus, a soul guide. Not believeing them at first but determined not to freak out she humors them and quickly learns they are telling the truth. From there her and a member of her team named Max's story spiral into complete chaos. This story has everything from undying love to soul stealing vampires. Its a must read of a paranormal romance reader.
Oh man, this was so good! I actually finished it a few days ago but I had to get started immediately on book 2 so the review has been delayed a bit! Seriously, I would've been screaming and throwing things if I would not have had book 2 (Avenge) ready to go immediately upon finishing this! It was definitely one of those books that drag you into their world completely and you don't even wanna stop reading! The Patroni are very unique and I loved Lucy and her team immediately! And there are so many surprises along the way (some good, some bad) that it will keep you on your toes from beginning to end! Another series I have absolutely fallen in love with!
This book was awesome!!!! The story line takes a different twist on things than the norm. You've got vampires(which are the bad ones and not the hot sparkly ones) and you've got the Patronus which are the protectors(kind of like the guardian angels without wings). I love how Lucy is strong and tries to get through all of her hard training with the help of her friends in her group. Her relationship with Max has a much deeper meaning that you find out at the end of the book. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed this book! It was not what I expected & that I'm thankful for! Many times along the way I found myself smiling, giggling, & yep I even cried once. Sarah Ross offered a great spin on the normal afterlife ideas that I found refreshing, amusing, & action packed!! And ... even though I'm normally rooting for the vamps I was Team Lucy all the way for this trip! ;•} I'm eager to see what's to come for this awesome Patronus team!!! Avenge will no doubt be equally as great as Awaken! =)
Cannot wait till AVENGE comes out!! Page45 The Twilight Ref. was funny and Page53 "Asshat" was silly hilarious. Using Amelia Earhart and Queen Elizabeth was genius. Page124 Triple Shield was awesome. Page 170 made me cry. The ending of the book was just so unique. What a twist and imagination!! I can't wait for the next book!! Why is Marco after her?? Can't wait to find out if there was a set up involved if so who was the leak?? Adam and Eve Amazing!!! I really loved the book
Started reading it and could not put it down. One of the best books I have gotten free from Kindle in a LONG time. I am SOOO sad I have to wait for the next book...that is why I like to read books that have been out a while...I have no patience! lol
The book was interesting, a new take on a lot of standards in the fantasy group and a well done book.
so alot of times I choose to read a book because the cover just looks so good, I don't think this a great cover and doesn't really pull me in so this book has been sitting in my kindle library for sometime... that said... I loved this book. It was intriguing and a different take on angels, vampires and such and I read it in one sitting and am super excited for the next one!!!
Omg is all I have too say. This book had me hooked from the very beginning. I couldn't put it down and automatically downloaded the second one. I couldn't wait to see what happens next and I am in love with Max & Lucy. this book touched me in ways others like this didn't. I really recommend this read.
