Illumine #2

Obumbrate

Rate this book
The second book to The Illumine Series.

Essallie Hanley just wishes her life could go back to normal. But what's normal when you carry the burden of knowing you're a half-angel created for war, that the only person who can help you is a demon still waiting to kill you, and that your only chance for salvation lied in a boy who died in front of you?

If Essallie had turned her back on everything she'd learned, she could have made the most of her fractured life. That is, until Kayden told her that she's a ticking time-bomb; that at any given moment her blood could betray her, her veins burning her alive from the inside out until nothing but ash remains.

Desperate to find answers, and possibly find her only chance for survival, Essallie heads back for New York City, back to the place where it all began. With every answer comes a price, and with every price the risks and rewards become greater. But when Essallie soon finds herself the target of an unknown hunter determined to kill her, she's at wits' end. That is, until a fellow Nephilim named Ari steps in. But is Ari a piece of the puzzle to her salvation, or the promise of her demise?

I had an absolute BLAST writing this. Jumping back into Essallie's world, mingling with Kayden and newcomer Ari, it's been one heck of a rush, and I'm so excited you all finally have a chance to read it too!
And with that, I'll leave a little quote taken from the final copy of Obumbrate.

"And one more thing. Do be careful." Her voice sounded almost resembled something of sympathy and genuine concern. "When it comes to the race of Nephilim, the world reacts in two ways. None will take kindly to your angelic blood; there will be those who will seek to harvest your blood for their own gain. Others will want you dead, no matter the cost."

Wariness crept over my skin. "Why would you tell me this?"

"Because one of the last Nephilim was killed at the hands of a madwoman. A woman who tried to harvest the blood of Nephilim to create the perfect race."

This is the follow up story for Illumine by Ms. Anders and what a treasure it is. Amazing is the best way to describe the writing of her book.
Essallie is still coming in tune with her powers and what she is capable of. Losing people that she cares about seems to be following her. Kayden and Ari seem to be vying for her attention and when the two come together, what more can one ask for? But with Essallie coming to terms with what her fate is, is she willing to give her heart to anyone? Fighting off demons that are trying to kill her seems to be her biggest worries right now. Her heart will have to wait if there is time.
My biggest complain about this story is, why did it have to end so soon Ms. Anders? We as your readers are not patient people and can’t wait to find out what happens. I smell another sequel to this story.

Alivia delivers for her readers once again in the second installment of the Illumine series! I couldn't wait to jump right back into Essalie's world and get back to where book one left off and I wasn't disappointed! I was captivated from page one and couldn't stop reading until i finished the very last page..I hated to see the book end..it's like having to say goodbye to really great friends.. you never want them to leave.. you want the fun to continue on! i absolutely can't wait for the next book to find out what's going to happen next! I love "Obumbrate" because it has really great characters, awesome action scenes, and i love the way it makes me feel inside!

In the second book in the Illumine series, we follow Essallie after the traumatizing experiences she faced in Illumine. Obumbrate is a perfectly weaved story which highlights the pain and discovery that Essallie goes through.

Combating the loss we feel in Illumine, Obumbrate brings forth a gain: the character of Ari, who very easily becomes a favorite.

As Leo was a character that lured me as I read Illumine (I'm still #TeaLeo, btw), Ari does the same for me throughout Obumbrate. I am yearning for more of him, for more of Essie, and even for more of Kayden, though I'm still not sure what to make of him.

The fact that I care even more for the characters now than I did when reading Illumine, attest to my new infatuation with everything Alivia Anders.

Watching Essallie in action, witnessing her relationships with Kayden, Ari, Serena, and the other characters is an exhilarating experience.

Anders' managed to weave paranormal, romantic, and fantastical aspects into her novel with seemingly perfect balance. As I have said before, she has made a fangirl of me, and I'm sure others would be just as entranced.

While reading this novel, I became so immersed in the plot that I didn't realize I was nearing the end. I ended the book with a gasp and a rush of adrenaline, like emerging from a fall into a deep body of water, or awakening from a never-ending slumber.

The cover is classic and simple and ties in with the previous cover almost perfectly. Just the title itself, which I admittedly had to look up is perfect.

Obumbrate, which means to darken, overshadow, or cloud, is the exact opposite of Illumine, which means to brighten or to enlighten. Alivia's picks for the titles of her novels are exceedingly perfect as the encompass the traits of each novel exactly.

I'd definitely recommend this novel, and like it's predecessor I rate it 5 stars. I will be awaiting the third in the series even more anxiously as I awaited Obumbrate.

Leaving off where Illumine ended, with such tragic events that Essalie had to endure, I am amazed by how she has such a strong will and seemingly never ending faith that obviously helped her get through the loss she suffered in Illumine. In Obumbrate, things still haven't yet slowed down for Essalie, and she powers through every obstacle thrown her way. It's obvious that Anders has a great passion for writing with the power withheld in Obumbrate. She has created a character that you can't help but fall in love with and feel so emotionally for.

Essalie has remained so unbelievably strong throughout everything, but when she learns that her life is dwindling away far faster than expected, she finally let's everything catch up to her. I can't say I blame her, and to know something that is inevitable is going to happen far sooner than realized, it leaves you full of sadness, depression and great sorrow.

Luckily, an idea forms that not everyone will like, and her friends will try to stop. But hey, if she's going to die soon, why not take a wicked queen down with her? Right?! It's when she learns that the Queen knows far more about her and all of the mysteries about her life and powers that might stop her plans dead in their tracks.

I received this book from the author to give an honest review.

Obumbrate took over where Illumine left off and let me tell you I was HOOKED! Obumbrate is fast-paced and full of action. I loved the way she described when Essallie was kicking a..
When we lost Leo in book 1 Illumine, I wondered if there was ever going to be another character to love. And thankfully Alivia wrote the character Ari, he is a character that you can fall in love with especially considering that he is a Nephilim just like Essallie. He has a past that he does not like to talk about, and he has learn that you need to live life even if you are on death's doorstep.

Kayden is still the cocky demon that he was in Illumine but in Obumbrate you can tell he is starting to get feelings for Essallie and also why he does not like the Queen.

In this book you will see the character's relationships evolve and Essallie struggle with her feelings of losing Leo, to having feelings for Kayden and Ari.

Essallie is just wanting to finish school and push those away that want to help her. She is still devastated after losing Leo and is not wanting anything to do with being a Nephilim. But little does she know that there is someone out there that wants her alive so they can have her blood. That person is the Queen which you will learn more about and her story. Essallie is wanting to kill the Queen since she caused the death of more people that Essallie cares about.

My favorite quotes in this book were: This was said by Ari to Essallie " You can't just give up and quit life. That's not how living works, sorry to piss on your pity party. When a cancer patient gets a diagnosis, they don't simply just stop living life. They fight. Essallie, fight like hell against every mutant cell in their body. From the moment I met you I knew you were a fighter, now I'm not so sure someone so weak and pitiful could have ever been a fighter."

Quote 2: Essallie arguing with Ari: "Oh? Pardon me, I thought I was all sparkles and sprinkle." I just laughed at this quote because how many times do we want to say this to people when they like to comment on our attitudes.

Alivia, has done it once again to me left me wanting more of Essallie and her journey. I want to know what is going to happen to her since her clock is counting down. I want to know about her feelings for Ari and Kayden. I also want to hear more about Jessica and her full part in all this and why the Queen has her.
I can not wait until December to read book 3 in this wonderful paranormal series. Wish December would get here quicker.

Ever felt that life couldn't get any more complicated, for Essallie Hanley being told she is a weapon and can be used that can put one big strain on life. Just days after the attack her ex had orchestrated, getting back to normal can take some time. Esepcially when you lose someone you felt a deep connection with. Not wanting to do anything with being a Nephilim and pushing away those who helped along the way, Essallie just wants the school year to end and go back home. But when the queen wants something she usually gets it, this time she is after the one Essallie can't give her, thats her power. So when attacked Essallie ventures into the last place she wants to go, Charon. Since the place gave her insight before, maybe the same person can give more of an idea of how much time she actually has.

Meeting Ari was a plus because another Nephiim couldn't get worst right. Its until he starts to question why she can't fight for herself. Essallie can see that he cares for her, but at the end of the day her time is running out and starting something is just not possible. Unless Kayden of course shows up with nothing more than a what stare. The problem with Kayden is that he just used her for his benefit and he pushes her buttons. With the three of them, figuring out a plan to see why the queen wants Essallie isn't as easy as any plan would go. One thing for sure Essallie puts her feelings aside and does the one thing she knows to do, question everything there is to be questioned.

While reading this I saw that Essallie was really trying hard to push those close to her, and in doing so she prevented any feelings to get in the way of her actions. Of course realizing Kayden used her really help with being on Team Kayden and of course later on he than changed my mind. Kayden is like that always changing my mind at every turn. Meeting Ari at first I was cautious and as the pages were turned I realized wow he actually cares and she doesn't yet see that he can actually see her. Add in a clock and you have the making of an intense ride. The one thing though to put some tears in my eyes was finding out who her watcher was, it hit me like an arrow to the heart. Of course her journey continues later this year, its just the wait is going to be tough. I want to know more of the queen, and who Essallie picks. Anders draws you in and leaves you wanting more and thats when you wish Christmas came faster.

BLEW MY SOCKS OFF! - 5/5 stars

Plot: 5/5 stars
My thoughts are all a-twitter … which is very abnormal for me, as I try to reflect on the plethora of details, sub-plots, twist, turns, and the many passions that this story sucked from me. This book is like riding the greatest roller coaster in the world - it will leave you tense, exhausted, exhilarated, grinning like an idiot and begging for more all at the same time!

Characters: 5/5 stars
I wanted to slap the ever living SNOT out of the main character but in a “child are you blind?!” kind of way. She’s kinda-sorta stuck in a Bella/Edward/Jacob triangle but it’s so much better because it also kind of reminds me of the proverbial “devil on one shoulder, angel on the other” except that they’re life-sized, sexy, and ready to brawl over her. *rests the back of my hand on my forehead* “Oh miss Scarlett whatever shall I do?” But! They’re not all simpy and emo about it. Masculinity is not dead, yay! And the best part of it is that she’s not a whiney, pathetic, pining wimp about it. Despite the obvious temptation, she fights to take the high road - like a post-Ike-Tina-Turner and ‘she don’t need a man’! Love her, hate her, wanna be her … GUILTY!

Writing: 5/5 stars
Those of you that have read my review of book one in this series (Illumine) might be surprised that I’ve gone from a 3.6 star review to a 5 star review but this author EXPLODED into maturity with her writing in this book to a degree that makes me want to search her house for evidence that she’s hiding J.K. Rowling in her basement.

Editing/Formatting: 0/0 stars
I received a proof e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The proof had not yet been edited/formatted for public purchase so I am unable to rate it either way in this regard (note 0/0 not 0/5 - in other words this portion of the review has no bearing on the book’s overall rating.)

Originality: 5/5 stars

I'll tell you what, I didn't know the first thing to expect with Obumbrate. Illumine was such a great read and the cliffhanger at the end had me thinking, "What else could be worse than this." Well, Anders decides to be clever and throw a love triangle, broken hearts, and deceit in the mix! It was hard to believe Obumbrate was a sequel, it was just so different--stronger, in a way--from Illumine. I think Obumbrate was actually BETTER then book 1, and I'm only hoping book 3, RIVEN, will dominate as well.

As promised to the author, I am going to admit that I cried. It's no secret that I'm a total cry baby when emotions start to pour in a book, but Obumbrate hit home when Essallie's life really took a dive in the deep end with Kayden. I like feeling that way about a character because then I know for sure the book is a book to remember. Obumbrate was heartfelt and mythical, enchanting and very well schemed. NO ONE could have written it better and I just loved watching Illumine graduate into Obumbrate; the writing, as well as Anders, really grew up in this one. There's always something you can learn from someone, but I find that in Obumbrate I've learned so much.

I'm Team Kayden, and that's no secret either. I fall easily for the bad boys. But... then there's Ari, the sweetie. And when you get the bad boy and good boy, it's really hard for you to decide. Imagine what Essallie must be going through! Anyway, I really enjoyed the love triangle and was glad that Essallie knew what she wanted and wasn't the type to play them both until she rendered them tired of her. My only wish was that Kayden and Essallie's relationship would have been explored more. I really wanted DETAILS! But, I've been promised a happier ending (hopefully no more cliffhangers!)and I happily anticipate RIVEN!

Obumbrate is the perfect follow on for Illumine, it is full of twists and turns and leaps in unexpected directions.
Essie is starting to figure herself out a bit more and is learning how to control her gift better, or more to the point her body is guiding her through some very tough and dangerous times. She epitomizes a teenage girl on this book with her moodiness and self wallowing, I really hope she can pull through the hard destiny that has been laid before her and come out the other side of the dangers ahead a happier and brighter Essie. I do love her fire though, it really helps her see clearly and protects her from within from the dangers all around her, including her romantic complications throughout this book.
Kayden is still around and trying to convince Essie that he is there up help, which I still haven't decided if its the truth or not as he has portrayed himself as a very heartless demon indeed with his ploys and tactics that he uses against Essie.
I live the introduction of Ari, he adds another dimension as well as offers a few answers along the way.
This book holds it all, heartbreak, love, loss, rage and plenty of snarky comments and I love how the term pity party was used it was exactly how I was feeling about things at one point.
Essie has such a hard road ahead I am hoping that she finds her peace in
the next book which I can't wait to read.

“Obumbrate” by Alivia Anders is the second in her Illumine series and takes off where the first book left us wondering what Essallie and her new powers would get up to and how she would cope with all the trauma she has experienced.
We still wonder about Essie’s relationship with demon Kayden who gets some competition for Essie’s attention from Ari. Coming to terms with her gift or curse, the physical challenge that this represents and having to make up her mind whom she can trust and whom she can’t, this book turns from the more light hearted first instalment in the series into something more dark and obscure, hence the title change from ‘light’ [Illumine book 1] to ‘dark’ [Obumbrate book 2].
The story moves just as fast as it did in book one and with the introduction of Ari we have back the element of romantic suspense and conflict on top of the battle between good and evil/ angels and demons. Anders has created great characters for her book and handles the descriptions of supernatural powers and beings very well. It is a great thriller and a gripping read for any fan of the genre.

I was given this review in exchange for a honest review. ~WaAr~

I really don't know where to start. The first book Illumine was amazing and now Obumbrate comes along and it starts and ends with a BANG! I'm truly almost speechless. I didn't foresee the twists and turns that took place in this fast paced read. We find out more about what makes the characters tick and how the events shaped them. We even have another love triangle!! I just love those!!

This second story practically starts where Illumine left off. Essie is trying to cope with the death of her friend. She is mad at being deceived by her friends and enemies. This action packed journey we find out more about Essie, Kayden, and Ari. How long will Essie live? Who will she choose the half angel or the demon? How and Why is someone trying to kill her? Is her family safe? You have to read this to find out!! I am truly dying to read the next book Riven!!! I give this a 5 star squealing review!! The author has so much passion in her writing that you will get immerse within the story after reading the first page!

I was given this book in return for an honest review. Essie's story continues. Essie is not only trying to cope with her life as a Nephilim, but also with the death of her friend, who may also have been her Watcher. Without anyone she truly trusts, she is at wits end. She knows that she is a danger to everyone around her and has to learn to trust someone in order to get some answers. Enter Ari, another Nephilim. He will help her discover if her Watcher is really dead, if he is, she will die too. Essie will also have to trust Kaden to an extent, she has no choice and she has some kind of, come and go, attraction to him. With nothing to lose, the three will take on the most powerful supernatural and possibly lose all of their lives. This second book in the series is just as good as the first one, and left me knowing I'll be watching for the next one for sure.

I was given this book on a read to review basis.

Obumbrate is the 2nd book in the Illumine Series, and starts off where Illumine finished.

From the first page I couldn't put this book down, I even took my kindle to work so I could read it on my break. The book is well written, action packed, fast paced and full of twists. The last chapter just had me shocked and wishing there was so much more to the book.

The characters draw you in and you find yourself right in the middle of the story with them, through every up and down. You want to know more about all of them, where there story will lead, and what has happened to lead them here. I personally can't decide between Kayden or Ari, but Essie has enough on her mind without having to complicate it further with love interests.

Eagerly awaiting the 3rd book, Riven.

Alivia did not skip a beat with this one! Obumbrate picks up right where Illumine left off. Same amount of action and sarcasm which makes it a fun, quick read. But it was lacking some of the suspense i thoroughly enjoyed from the 1st book.

I love these characters and this story! I am in love with the setting and plot, im still very impressed with the development of this fantastic world she has created. To the author, please understand the only thing holding me back from 5 stars is that there are so many errors. Simple things like cue/clue, i dont even remember, but this stuff they detract from the amazing story you have woven. I see this was written a few years ago, i look forward to seeing the progress of this author.

(warning will have spoilers for book 1, stop now if you had not read the first one)

Wow, this book was even better than the first, but you still need to read the first, as it’s a continuing story. I really love the uniqueness to this story. I really started to connect with Essallie even more, and really felt for her and the loss she suffered in the first book when Leo died. We loose Leo, but gain the wonderful Ari.

She and Ari grow closer as the story moves along, but to my dismay she also grows closer to Kayden, I am sorry, I still have a vivid visual of how he tore apart Chase and ate his insides, that there is enough for me, but also, he is a demon, and his demon form is disgusting!! Ewwww how can she even think to see him as the gorgeous human he portrays, as it’s not his real form. Anyway, I love Ari, and sure hope things progress with the two of them.

This book is non-stop action and suspense. It’s really exciting to read, I was not able to put it down. I was not too happy with that huge cliffhanger, but am so glad I read these 2 book now, only a few days before Riven the next one is out. Makes the wait more bearable, lol.

I think anyone who has enjoyed books like Harry Potter, and The Mortal Instruments will really like this series. It has only some similarities to it, just enough to really make it great.

5 out of 5 big stars for me.

I was provided a copy of this book for my honest review for the book tour the author has going on.

After turning the last page of Illumine, I knew without a doubt that I'd be back for more. Despite a slightly rocky start between Essallie and I, by the ending all I wanted was to know what would happen next. I fell in love with the action, with the characters, and with the delicious tension that Alivia Anders builds up. I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy of Obumbrate and dive right in.

What immediately struck me was how much Essallie shines in this book. I already knew she was a strong character who doesn't-need-your-help-thank-you-very-much. I love a strong female protagonist, and she fills that role! However in Obumbrate I was really able to see how deep her inner strength goes. After suffering a loss she should, by all rights, be completely down. I know I'd be in bed with cookies and pajamas. Essallie won't have it though, and instead she musters her courage and sets off to protect what's hers. I love this girl!

I also love the plot this time around. Essallie sets off on a quest for answers, and her journey to get them is wholly immersing. I read through this so quickly that I hadn't even realized I was getting close to the end. When I flipped the last page I almost cried. I won't lie. The fact that Essallie is so much more vivid in this book really made me want to keep reading more. I felt for her, I wanted her to succeed, and I won't deny that I shared some of her rage and anguish.

Then of course, there was more Kayden. Okay, yes, he's the bad boy. I can't help but feel a smug satisfaction every time he makes a sarcastic comment to Essallie. He's good at what he does! In Obumbrate though we start to see a different side of him. Honestly? I love him even more now. Plus there is a new character to pit against him. Ari, ah Ari. Such a wonderful guy. No spoilers here, but yum. Ahem.

Obumbrate gets a shiny four stars from this bookworm! There were a few minor grammatical errors, but nothing huge. I definitely enjoyed being allowed to dive deeper into the madness that is Essallie's life. There is nothing I want more than to get to the next book. Cliffhanger warning, because you'll want it too. More Kayden, more action, more Alivia Anders.

TOP NOTCH - PHENOMENAL

Another amazing spectacular read by the talented Author Alivia Anders!!! I fell in love with Alivia’s work with “Illumine” book #1 of this trilogy, after I had on it as a first reads on goodreads.

Once I was cocooned in my book zone, I didn’t come out until I was completely finished. (well, I did for breaks)
Then came along “Obumbrate” book #2, and I was given a copy by Alivia herself for my enjoy. So off to my *book zone I went* And as a avid reader I feel it only fair to give my fair and unbiased opinion in this review.

Oh my heavens, I fell in love once more as I headed into the world of nephilim, angels, demons and watchers….

Poor Essallie just wants her life to go back to being normal again. Her world is upside down. The immense weight on her shoulders, knowing that she’s half angel created for war, and the only person who could help her is the very same demon that’s still waiting to kill her. And the only chance for her lies in a boy who had died right in front of her!!!

I just want to wrap Essallie in a nice warm blanket, to keep her safe. Man my angel wingz won’t stop being all flustered for her as I read this book.

While still coming into her powers, learning just exactly what she can do and not do, also losing people that she cares about, then two trying to gain her attention (Kayden and Ari) its enough to drive anyone crazy. But this is just a few insights of whats in store for poor Essallie… oh and did I mention the fighting/warding off of the ever persistent demons??? Ughh

What will be the fate of Essallie? Who will she give her heart to, or will she? Questions, questions every which way you turn. The suspense and story continue to build; all I can say is please hurry Alivia with book #3, “Riven”!!! it has to have some answers for us.

Well done, on this fabulous sequel that has left me once more hanging on the edge of that “Illumine Cliff”

A MUST READ!!

I picked up this one right after finishing the first one in the series. With an ending like the first one, I couldn't help but want to pick it up.

This is quite the original storyline. One that is pretty out there but not so out there that you find it completely hard to believe. It has just enough reality and fiction thrown in to make it a fun adventurous read.

I didn't quite connect with Essie in the first one so I was really hope this one would rectify that. And while I wouldn't say I connected to her, I did find myself liking her more and relating a little more to her.

I will say I liked Kayden a little more in this one. He wasn't portrayed as quite the demon monster he was in the first one but I still had a really hard time with Essie liking him and seeing him in any kind of romantic light. I think I just couldn't get past the first gruesome scene in Illumine to see him as anything other than the monster he was portrayed as.

I did however love Ari. He is a great addition to the series and one that I hope sticks by Essie and helps her along the way.

We get some new characters in this one, some good, some bad and also a whole lot more of the action and fast paced plot we saw in the first book.

Essie is growing up a little and starting to come into her own. She is dealing with fast issues and trying to move on and do what needs to be done before it is too late for her.

Again, this one ended with a slight cliffhanger. Nothing that made me want to chuck my Kindle acorss the room (thank goodness) but enough to make me want the third book immediately, which I didn't have unfortunately. I will definitely be picking it up though to see what plays out next. I can't help it, for whatever reason this series quickly got me hooked and I can only credit that to the writing of Ms. Anders.

I give this one 3.5 to 4 Stars!

Well, absence does not make the heart grow fonder in this instance. I purchased the newest e-version I could find, and somehow the errors were worse in this one! I don’t understand. Is it me? Is this book suffering from emotional transfer I carried over from the first book? No, I don’t think so. For one thing, we still don’t get the major loose end tied up till the very end of this book.

The romantic aspect of this story was, ::shakes head:: just plain bad IMO. It went back and forth so fast and honestly hindered the story for me. It could have been left out and it wouldn’t have changed the plot. It was fluff in my opinion. I’m being kind of a hard-ass on this one because I just couldn’t keep my beta hat off once I started reading it.

This book needs an editor! Preferably an developmental editor. I found timeline issues and plot holes, not big ones mind you. But they kept adding up till I just couldn’t read it open minded anymore. And that’s when the beta reader came out.

Her emotions aren’t cohesive. They scatter about. The plot is good but the writing doesn’t go into enough detail, it skips around with no transitional sentences. It was a bit hard to follow. It almost seems like the author is trying for bad-ass female lead but without the follow through of depth of character. There is emotions but no reason why she is feeling them, this caused a big disconnect for me. She was very angry for no reason, and she didn’t seem to want to find out why everyone was after her. She took strangers advice and trusted them for no reason. It all just seemed very wishy washy to me.

Again, I’m going to TRY to read the next one, but truth be told I’m pretty pissed about this one.

This book picks right back up from Illumines dramatic ending of Leo's death and Essalies impending demise from the death of who she believes is her Watcher.

Essalie is confused, betrayed and grief stricken. With who she believes to be her watcher gone she faces the fact that she won't be able to ascend so will soon die herself.
All the skeletons seem to be out of the closet now and Kayden's true selfish nature is revealed. He is meant to kill her afterall.
With no one to turn to and her family to protect she travels to Charon in search of answers and finds help in the only other Nephilim alive, Ari. Together they journey to see if Leo really was her watcher and if there's any hope in saving her.

Their both vulnerable, lonely and currently the only two of their kind left. Up until now Essalie truly didn't realise how deep the hatred for the Nephillim was or how far back the history of their race went.

Friends and enemies are frequently changing but the one who always seems to be at the centre of it all is the Queen. But why?

Great sequel in the series, certainly didn't disappoint.
Essalie is strong and determined but still only a teenage girl which is easy to forget as she's dealt with so much.
Kayden is the rogue love interest we all know is the wrong choice but can't help ourselves wanting. With the hidden facets being revealed i'm intrigued to see how he develops.
Poor Ari's come along abit late in the game to match Kayden in Essie's heart but he's equally been through a terrible journey and survived to tell the tale...went he felt like it.

Dialogue was easy and fresh with a good flow. The language was modern, fitting well with the target market and age of the characters.

Looking forward to Riven

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

This Series keeps getting better and better! With Book 2 starting off where Book 1 Illumine left off, we find ourselves on a continued wild dark ride into the world of the unknown. Essallie now knows she is Nephilim, part human and part Angel, but unless she finds her Watcher and ascends she will die. Everyone wants to help her but there is no one she can trust and it seems everyone is out to kill her. Her best friend lied to her, her brother must be kept out of it for his own safety, her mother, well she is just psycho and Kayden the Demon... he won't be free until she is dead, so why would he help her. This is a strong story that takes the reader into the life of girl who must find the strength within herself to face what ever life throws at her, which could ultimately be her death. With lots of mystery, suspense, magic and romance this story will have you looking for a portal into Charon the way a brick wall behind the Leaky Cauldron takes you into Diagon Alley. And the twist at the end... that has left me wanting so much more! A must read for anyone who loves YA Paranormal Fantasy Series!

'I received this book from the author in return of an honest review.'

This series just gets better and better. If I couldn't put Illumine down then Obumbrate was definitely stuck to me like glue.
Now that Essie has found out who or what she truly is and has lost her friend because of it she now has to face so much more than she ever expected. In Obumbrate, she finds herself trusting those she thought she never would and facing enemies she didn't even know she had. In her new-found world, that she feels more and more at home in, she also finds that her kind, Nephilim, are outcasts and unwelcomed due to past events that are revealed to her as time goes by. She also finds herself with new choices to make and new feeling she didn't realize existed....unwelcomed feelings to say the least. Obumbrate is packed full of action, adventure, humor and yes, a bit of romance too. It was an excellent sequel to Illumine and if you haven't read it yet then I suggest you go get it now...after reading Illumine first though. Job well done Alivia Anders! ~AC Wright (WaAr)~

Obumbrate by Olivia Anders
The sequel to Illumine is mad joy ride of adventure, betrayal, love and disappointment. The story picks up where it left off in Illumine but it goes on to reveal, more, explore deeper and to take the reader deeper into a world never before explored. This is one scary world though. Never knowing who to trust, never knowing why you yourself are such a pivotal role player, not even understanding your own power or its limitations. All this is part of the world of Obumbrate, but reader beware; the end of this book is a cliff hanger like none other. You will be left paging back a few pages, then try to contact the author, then go and look if book three is already available, for this ending will leave you wanting more. I can recommend this book to all lovers of the supernatural young adult crowd. But, begin with the beginning and read slow. The book is thus far not available.
