Questo libro non ha bisogno del rating con le stelline, lo trovo altamente superfluo. Trevor non può infatti essere valutato per la storia, lo stile di scrittura o i personaggi, ma per lo scopo e l'importanza che questo romanzo ha al mondo d'oggi. Il messaggio arriva forte e chiaro e mi rincuora sapere che questo libro potrà essere di aiuto e conforto a qualcuno, chiunque, giovane (soprattutto) e non. Trevor è un tredicenne che ama Lady Gaga, guarda al mondo con energia e gioia di vivere, ma allo stesso tempo viene preso in giro dai suoi compagni “perché cammina da gay”, e non riesce ad avere un dialogo con i genitori che arrivano a mandarlo da un prete per parlare della sua sessualità.

Se io lo sia davvero o no non conta. Il punto è un altro: è sbagliato rendere pubblico l'orientamento sessuale degli altri, ed è altrettanto sbagliato andarsene in giro a pretendere che qualcuno renda pubblico il suo orientamento sessuale se lui/lei non se la sente.

A volte non servono centinaia di pagine per sentirsi davvero coinvolti in un romanzo. A volte sono sufficienti poche righe, una manciata di pagine che parlano con piena onestà e una leggerezza invidiabile. A volte basta soltanto una frase – “non sei sbagliato, sei come sei” – e bam: rien ne va plus, les jeux sont faits. Questa novella è ormai fuori da un po’ di tempo, lo ricordo perché la copertina – così semplice, pulita e al tempo stesso di grande impatto – ha c Recensito su: ChiaraLeggeTroppo.

A volte basta soltanto una frase – “non sei sbagliato, sei come sei” – e bam: rien ne va plus, les jeux sont faits. Questa novella è ormai fuori da un po’ di tempo, lo ricordo perché la copertina – così semplice, pulita e al tempo stesso di grande impatto – ha capeggiato per un po’ di tempo nella mia bacheca facebook rimanendo impressa tra i miei pensieri, ma è stato in occasione del Readathon day che mi sono finalmente prefissa di affrontarla. Che poi sabato 24 la giornata mi sia letteralmente scappata dalle mani per svariati motivi, è un altro discorso: ho rubato un’ora abbondante ad un lunedì di studio inconcludente e mi sono rimessa in pari. Ritrovandomi a pensare, però, che avrei dovuto farlo molto prima.

Se io lo sia davvero o no non conta. Il punto è un altro: è sbagliato rendere pubblico l’orientamento sessuale degli altri, ed è altrettanto sbagliato andarsene in giro a pretendere che qualcuno renda pubblico il suo orientamento sessuale se lui/lei non se la sente.

Trevor è un bambino e guarda al mondo con occhi che non hanno ancora perso l’innocente incanto dell’infanzia, per cedere il passo al cinico timore adolescenziale che attacca tutto ciò che non si conforma al gruppo. Pieno di energia, di gioia e di voglia di vivere, è una stella che brilla di luce propria in un universo costellato di lune, avide di divorare la luminosità altrui, e non ha paura di premere sull’acceleratore per sentire le orecchie fischiare e il vento schiaffeggiargli la faccia. Si fa portavoce di messaggi importanti, ispirato dal coraggio di una Lady Gaga che ai suoi occhi incarna tutto ciò che nella vita bisognerebbe avere il coraggio di essere, e si lascia trascinare da un entusiasmo che se da un lato emoziona dall’altro spinge verso una preoccupazione sincera. Perché se lui non si rende conto di cosa implichi il suo essere così giovane e così diverso, noi che lo leggiamo lo sappiamo fin troppo bene: isolamento, derisione, cattiverie. Incomprensione, paura. Perché ciò che non si conforma spaventa, spaventa tantissimo, e la passione che Travor mette nel teatro, nelle coreografie, nel semplice atto di respirare non è quello che ci si aspetta da un quasi adolescente maschio. Non è Pinky che si vorrebbe avere al suo fianco, non è a lui che si aspettano siano indirizzati pensieri e telefonate, e la lenta evoluzione della cornice che abbraccia le sue giornate non è che la terribile conferma di qualcosa che non si cerca di comprendere, figuriamoci accettare. Dai suoi stessi genitori, che lo costringono a trascorrere un intero pomeriggio in compagnia di un prete (forse la categoria umana meno indicata ad affrontare il tema della sessualità con chiunque), agli amici più stretti, non sembra esserci nessuno in grado di capire e rispettare qualcosa che Trevor non è pronto ad ammettere con se stesso, ma che sceglie consapevolmente di abbracciare per poter essere liberamente se stesso. Il silenzio si apre come un baratro senza fondo attorno a lui, lasciandolo solo su un’isoletta da cui dovrà affrontare non solo una famiglia che non vuole capire ma anche il bullismo scatenatosi nei suoi confronti a scuola. Non ci saranno mani tese, parole di conforto o prese di posizione a sostenere le sue spalle gracili, alleviando il peso di un fardello che non dovrebbe essere tale, e, sprofondato in un vortice di solitaria disperazione, questo piccolo ragazzino pieno di vita sceglierà di sacrificare ogni cosa, se stesso e la sua vita, perché incapace di continuare a vivere in un mondo che non vuole accettarlo.

Quando sei giovane, qualsiasi cosa ti capiti la gente ti dice che la supererai, che te la butterai alle spalle; lo dicono come se ciò che provi, i tuoi sentimenti, non fossero veri, o al limite soltanto un semplice allenamento per affrontare quello che poi arriva crescendo. Ma a contare è solo ciò che abbiamo nel presente. L’amore che oggi sentiamo è ciò che sappiamo dell’amore; è ciò con cui dobbiamo fare i conti. La gente rifiuta di ammettere che a volte proviamo sensazioni così forti che vorremmo solo stenderci per terra e morire piuttosto che continuare a provarle. Non sto dicendo che sia una bella cosa, questa; dico solo che è così che va. E lo so perché a me è successo.

Ci vuole tanta delicatezza, nel trattare questo tema scottante – che non dovrebbe neppure esser tale, non nel 2015, non con tutte le presunte campagne per libertà e diritti che ci martellano quotidianamente, perché essere se stessi e amare chi si desidera dovrebbe essere lo stato naturale delle cose e non una conquista ancora lontana -, o quantomeno un grado di consapevolezza capace di evitare le banalità a basso costo che spesso vi si accompagnano. Potete affidarvi a Trevor senza preoccupazioni di sorta, sotto questo punto di punta: James Lecesne vi prenderà per mano e avrà cura di voi ad ogni riga, conducendovi lungo un percorso che lascerà un marchio indelebile tra i vostri pensieri, facendovi innamorare di un ragazzino dal cuore troppo grande e troppo pulito per il mondo che lo circonda. Non è banalmente la storia di Trevor, gay non esattamente consapevole di esserlo, che per questo motivo subisce violenze fisiche e psicologiche quotidianamente, al punto da arrivare a considerare, desiderare e tentare il suicidio perché incapace di vedere una via d’uscita dal buco nero di odio che lo sta logorando. O meglio, è anche questo, ma c’è molto di più al di là di una narrazione che toglie il fiato, cattura, diverte e commuove in un crescendo che poi esplode improvviso, inaspettato, non considerato. Fa pensare, moltissimo. Personalmente sono rimasta estremamente colpita dalla rapidità con cui il suicidio irrompe tra i suoi pensieri, denotando tutta la mia insensibilità di fronte ad una sofferenza che solamente un carattere estremamente solare riusciva a mitigare: non mi ero resa conto, leggendo, che Trevor stesse subendo degli abusi tanto gravi. E cosa mi dice che lo stesso non accada a qualcuno che mi sta accanto, ma che sa convivere con la propria sofferenza e nasconderla al resto del mondo? Cosa mi dice che questa persona non sia vicina al limite? È avvilente, e al tempo stesso aberrante, la crudele verità racchiusa in così poche pagine: non sai mai cosa stai vivendo la persona che ride al tuo fianco. Non davvero. Non voglio essere fraintesa, ma l’ho vissuto come una doccia fredda, o un pugno allo stomaco – non mi ero resa conto di cosa stesse profilandosi all’orizzonte, esattamente come succede la maggior parte delle volte nel mondo non di carta. Non ci si rende conto, non si è in grado di sapere con certezza se il limite ultimo è stato infranto o meno, e quando succede fa male.
Che succeda ancora, è deprecabile. Che succeda perché non si è capaci di accettare che la sessualità è una cosa naturale, a prescindere da qualsiasi altro retaggio culturale, è inaccettabile. Ma fin tanto che il mondo è quello che è, tocca stringere i denti e andare avanti. Quello che mi consola è che i Trevor nel mondo non siano più così soli e abbandonati, ma che esistano angoli di universo a cui possono rivolgersi per chiedere aiuto, o semplicemente parlare. Vi lascio con i recapiti italiani, e l’imperativo categorico di leggere questa novella: non vi porterà via più di un’ora di tempo, e in cambio vi donerà il mondo.

I give this book a 2.5 for writing and a 4 for importance. A fast, humorous read, "Trevor," is the story that inspired The Trevor Project. Based on author James Lecesne's own adolescent journals, the story was originally a one man Off Broadway play(for which it won a Drama Critics Circle Award) and then became an Academy Award winning short film. Now we have the book.

The character of Trevor is a dramatic, good-natured adolescent trying to discover who he is. His first person voice is strong and I give this book a 2.5 for writing and a 4 for importance. A fast, humorous read, "Trevor," is the story that inspired The Trevor Project. Based on author James Lecesne's own adolescent journals, the story was originally a one man Off Broadway play(for which it won a Drama Critics Circle Award) and then became an Academy Award winning short film. Now we have the book.

The character of Trevor is a dramatic, good-natured adolescent trying to discover who he is. His first person voice is strong and believable. His story is one we are familiar with thanks to lots of terrific LGBTQ Young Adult literature. However, in the 1990's, when Lecesne began this journey, this was not the case. There was little quality literature dealing with LGBTQ issues. The problem with Trevor is that it is thin in terms of both plot and character development and, as a result, Trevor is not well-developed enough for the reader to feel much empathy for him. On the other hand, for a reluctant reader, this could be a plus. It is a fast, humorous read - less like "Will Grayson, Will Grayson," more like "Absolutely, Positively Not."

The fact that the book includes many resources for LGBTQ teens and that the story is what inspired The Trevor Project makes it important and a good purchase for school and public libraries.In addition, there is much here in terms of good messages for teens. For instance, on page 21, Trevor thinks,

"Perhaps it reminded me that anything could happen to any one of us at any moment. Our lives could change - or end - with a moment's notice."

I have experienced this over and over in my life.

On page 71, Trevor thinks,

"When you're young, people tell you that you'll get over stuff; they say it as though what you're feeling isn't really real or it's just practice for what comes later in life. But what we have now is all that matters. The love we feel today is what we know of love; good or bad, it's what we've got to work with. People don't recognize that sometimes a feeling is so intense it makes you just want to lay down and die rather than go on feeling it. I'm not saying that that's a good thing; I'm just saying that it happens. And I know it happened to me." Ahhh, that is certainly the truth. it's what I thought when I read "Eleanor and Park."

First love is SO intense. And, all you can see and feel at the time is what is happening NOW.

I have a couple of teachers and students in mind who will find value in this book. Glad I read it. Good, not great. Note that there are a couple of scenes where masturbation and sex are discussed (the "birds and bees" talk between a priest and the main character). ...more

Two stars seems harsh. It's all about the writing style, which is quite accessible to the right teen. Short, clear, in spoken language. These attributes make the book perfect for a certain reader and I am happy it is available.
Trevor is 14, a free spirit, his school is Not Ready for him. Conversely Trevor is insisting on rejecting the boxes his classmates and family want to impose. Huge struggle and the harm always lands on the individual who is merely trying to live with integrity to self.

Ho affrontato una lettura piacevole, leggera e sarcastica.
Tutti aspetti positivi, ma allora perché tre stelle? Beh, ho letto la versione italiana e ci sono stati errori grammaticali non da poco (ad esempio “un” con l’apostrofo quando non era necessario).
Ma a parte ciò, ho trovato la trama poco esaustiva, un po’ troppo messa alle strette (anche perché il libro ha una lunghezza di circa 100 pagine).

Trevor is a very small book on a very heavy topic. Trevor is a fictional account but mirrors the very real life struggles that many gay teens may feel in high school. The book has an endearing love story that begins so innocently as friends and that you can watch grow into something more. Egyetlen bajom a könyvvel a rövidsége… Pontosabban a lényegre törő egyszerűsége, a szinte csak a történet szempontjából legfontosabb momentumok kiemelése. Ugyanez a sztori mondjuk legalább 300 oldalban kifejtve… Imádnám!
Amúgy csak ajánlani tudom. Könnyed stílus, nehéz téma… Jó kis kontraszt.

Trevor is a short but poignant story. It’s only a novella so you don’t get the same detail and character development that you would in a longer novel. But it is an effective read and it gets it’s point across clearly. It introduces us to Trevor – a thirteen year old boy who loves musical theatre and Lady GaGa. He wants to fit in and make friends but some kids at school make that difficult for him and eventually he feels as there is only one solution.

I liked that Trevor wasn’t a stereotype. Before his suicide attempt he wasn’t your the typical moody, depressed teen you would expect to see in these kind of stories. He wasn’t trying to pull away from society, he was trying to fit into it. He was trying to share his interests with other and getting in involved in group activities (like drama).

I thought this was key to this story because it showed how easily someone like Trevor could slip through the cracks. How people might not see the signs because it’s not always the signs we expect.

Though almost all of this book is moving in one way or another, I think I was most affected when a perfect stranger reached out and offered Trevor help. It moved me to think how easy it is to make a difference in the life of one person, but how many of us never stop to consider this. How many of us don’t make that same effort, and dismiss our inaction with phrases like “we’ll how much could one person do anyway?” One person could be all the difference.

I think the Trevor Project is an amazing initiative. If you’re not familiar the Trevor Project is a national crisis intervention and suicide prevention program, focusing on LGBTQ youth. 33% percent of teen suicides are commite by LGBTQ youth and one third of all LGBTQ in the United States have reported having attempted suicide. Nine out of ten report bullying and harassment in school. I like projects like “It Gets Better” as well but I feel that style of program is only a band aid solution – telling kids to just hang on until later in life. That’s all well and good but it doesn’t address the problem of what’s happening now.

Groups like The Trevor Project are dealing with the now. They’re talking to kids who have questions, who are suffering, who are feeling hopeless. Kids who can’t wait until later. And for that I think they’re everyday heroes.

Generally, I liked this very well, and thought it is a great novella to explore the issue of identity and cruelty in adolescence. Despite a couple of relatively minor editing/usage issues ("the halls teaming with people"), I commend the author for attempting to accomplish what he has, as explained in the afterword. Se potessi, farei una recensione di sole citazioni.
Se potessi, vi farei leggere la prefazione al libro perchè dice tutto quello che serve.
Se potessi, vi descriverei questo libro con un quadro. Uno di quelli che trasmettono inquietudine e solitudine in un groviglio di linee che corrono sulla tela.

Trevor is a slim, easy to read volume that follows the story of a high schooler struggling with his identity. The titular character approaches this struggle with an innocence that is charming but also heartbreaking. His "what's the big deal?" attitude challenges the reader to ask the same thing, even as Trevor's peers are lashing out at him. Lecesne's book is augmented by pencil illustrations that illuminate Trevor's emotions and struggles. The language is approachable and "PG", which makes this ...more

Racconto fluido e pieno di significato. Una dedica a tutti quei giovani che , consapevoli o meno della loro sessualità, vengono trattati come paria, indegni, rifiuti, oggetti di divertimento da parte dei compagni. E guardati con preoccupazione da parte degli adulti.
Si pensa che oggi un omosessuale o un transgender viva meglio. Vero. Non è più letale come ieri. Ma anche falso perché esserlo n on è ancora considerato davvero normale. Come si dice nel libro, dovremmo aiutare non tanto i gay ma gli ...more
