Trying to explain why you need to read Steve Canyon is like trying to sell Asterix to the French or Tintin to the Belgians.

You like adventure, some of the finest storytelling in graphic novels ever, terrific drawing and composition, multi-layered characters (male as well as female) and you haven't heard of Steve Canyon? That just can't be!
G.E.T. T.H.I.S.!!!
It's the best edition ever - and for a good price. The printing (both color and b&W) is top notch as is the paper and the binding.

Really excellent adventure fiction, beautifully drawn, with a nice mix of humor and drama. It's not quite as sharp as Terry and the Pirates (the women don't have the depth and character of Burma or the Dragon Lady, and they fawn over Canyon too easily), but it's still a fun trip. And the Library of American Comics did their expectedly splendid job reproducing the strips.

Caniff's canon is the secret archive of the American twentieth century. The more of his work I read, the more astounded I am that he is so tremendously underrated. Kirby, Romita, Buscema--all of the heavy-hitters who come after him are foreshadowed in panel after panel.
Caniff is at the height of his powers during the first handful of years on Steve Canyon (with this volume covering the first two years). The supporting cast never becomes quite as compelling as that of Terry and the Pirates, but C

Outstanding art and storytelling, of course. The reproduction of the strips is excellent, although I wish they could have been printed a bit larger. There are some unfortunate stereotypes and some goofy moments, but you have to pretend that you're reading this back in the '40s.

The biggest hurdle for me is some of the dialogue spoken by non-native English speakers. They speak in a variety phonetic broken English dialects that are very difficult to read. In fact, gave up even trying to read one o

A lot of fun. Not without its drawbacks. You need to be understanding of the time in which this was produced - racial and ethic stereotypes are common, in part inflamed by the recently completed war. Dialogue of non-English-speaking characters is a drawback.

But all of that said -- great drawing, interesting characters, good story lines, and window into a world where daily strips were common and followed widely.
