Marissa Pedroza’s THE PULL is a gripping supernatural thriller about a woman who just might be an agent of God. Nyah Garza had a very unfortunate life – her mother ran out on her when she was a child, leaving her in the care of a cruel and abusive grandmother; in high school, she was unjustly imprisoned; and more recently, her infant daughter Monica died in a tragic accident, leaving Nyah bitter and angry with her husband, Bruce, who she blamed for the accident. Nyah Garza had a very unfortunate life – her mother ran out on her when she was a child, leaving her in the care of a cruel and abusive grandmother; in high school, she was unjustly imprisoned; and more recently, her infant daughter Monica died in a tragic accident, leaving Nyah bitter and angry with her husband, Bruce, who she blamed for the accident. But something strange has been happening to Nyah. She gets odd feelings, which she calls “the Pull,” that direct her to people who need her help. It could be a young girl about to be brutally molested, or a boy in the hands of a satanic cult, or someone on the verge of great loss. Somehow, Nyah just knows where she needs to be, and she finds incredible strength – both physical and emotional – to fight the perpetrators of evil.

Nyah is a fascinating and fully developed character, with a rich and believable back story. Her relationship with her husband Bruce is both realistic and intensely sad – she has built up walls between them, and he has pulled away emotionally in response. Their slow and painful journey toward reconciliation is beautifully done. I liked them both very much – theirs is not a sugary sweet romance, but rather a real committed relationship tinged with doubt but filled with a love that Nyah can’t quite believe exists. The more she explores the truth about “the Pull,” the closer she grows to Bruce, and the more she is able to heal from the pain of her life.

This is a story that affirms the existence of God, as well as His hand in our lives. In a way, it reminded me of the TV series “Joan of Arcadia,” about a high school student who becomes an agent of God. In the series, Joan is visited by God (who appears to her in many different guises) and directed to help those around her. In THE PULL, Nyah is directed by something to do the same – there is a Baptist minister who is certain it is God, but Nyah and Bruce aren’t so sure. At the start of the novel Nyah is not a believer; by the end, she sees more possibilities. I wouldn’t call this a Christian novel, since the form God takes is generic. But it is definitely a spiritual thriller, firmly rooted in the idea that God touches us in many different ways.

On a more critical note, THE PULL does need a good editor. There are too many typos, punctuation errors (run-on sentences and comma splices, in particular), and awkwardly worded sentences. This is a good story, with good characters and a well-paced plot, and because of that the errors are disappointing. But none of the errors detract from the story itself, from Nyah’s character, or from the very uplifting and affirming message Pedroza delivers.

I recommend THE PULL for fans of supernatural thrillers, and for spiritual readers looking for a life-affirming novel with an intensely exciting plot. Nyah is a memorable character, and if Pedroza plans more novels focusing on her adventures (as is suggested at the end of this one), I will definitely be along for the ride.
