How can you save money on wedding attire? "Like the sense of accomplishment you feel buying those adorable Calvin Klein pants on the cheap at a little-known sample sale, you'll also feel great getting a bargain on what's probably the most expensive item of clothing you'll ever purchase." (From Chapter 13: Creativity on a Budget) If you cannot relate to any part of that sentence, this book is not for you. Written in the second person, the Everything Creative Wedding Book is directed at a straight woman who is going to shoulder all the traditional woman's work of planning a wedding (read: almost all of it) but doesn't know a lot about wedding traditions. She likes things to be cute and uses exclamation points! And likes cheesy jokes! She is reading this book at the very beginning of her wedding planning, perhaps before even getting engaged, because she is mulling the idea of doing a theme wedding. Maybe a Halloween wedding... or a traditional Hindu ceremony... or a square dance. What bothers me the most about this book is that it is supposed to be about "creativity," but the ideas are not original. It spends most of its time explaining how things are usually done in the Christian tradition in the United States. It's like the author has taken a standard wedding planning guide and padded it with extra chapters. When they say "creativity," they mean that you should DIY many things (favors, invitations, etc), but they don't give craft ideas or any specific instructions. And they mean you should think about a 1970's disco wedding (play ABBA!), or an "African" wedding (wear kente cloth!), or a dog-themed wedding (poop scoopers for favors!). The only thing that distinguishes this guide, a few funny and off-beat ideas, could be condensed into one Buzzfeed slideshow.
For a "Creative" Wedding Book, it wasn't so creative. Maybe in this age of Pinterest, I've already seen or heard of most of its ideas.
It's a good starting point if you want something different (or need something different like when the couple themselves are "nontraditional") and have no idea what to do. It has a lot of general ideas and things to think about if you're doing different, but if you already know generally what you want to do, it's not very helpful.
I was hoping for more creativity in the details (like the invitations) rather than just a general "you could do a board game night for your engagement party!"
