About the author

was a well known and very influential German Orientalist and scholar, who wrote extensively on Islam and Sufism. She was a professor at Harvard University from 1967 to 1992.

مستشرقة المانية ولدت في مدينة إرفورت بوسط ألمانيا لعائلة بروتستانتية تنتمي إلى الطبقة الوسطى..في عام 1939 نزحت مع الأسرة إلى برلين وفيها بدأت دراستها الجامعية للأستشراق. وبعد عام واحد بدأت العمل على رسالتها للدكتوراة حول مكانة علماء الدين في المجتمع المملوكى تحت إشراف ريشارد هارتمان وقد انتهت منها في نوفمبر 1941 وهى في التاسعة عشر من عمرها ونشرتها عام 1943 في مجلة "عالم الإسلام" تحت عنوان "الخليفة والقاضى في مصر في العصور الوسطى المتأخرة".
وفى نوفمبر من عام 1941 عملت كمترجمة عن التركية في وزارة الخارجية الألمانية. وفى وقت الفراغ واصلت اهتمامها العلمى بتاريخ المماليك حتى تمكنت من عمل فهارس لتاريخ ابن إياس. وفى مارس 1945، قبيل نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية بقليل، انتهت من رسالة الدكتوراه في جامعة برلين عن الطبقة العسكرية المملوكية.
وقد احرزت،، في عام 1995 وكأول مستشرقة ودارسة للإسلام جائزة السلام الألمانية التي يمنحها اتحاد الناشرين الألمان ويسلمها رئيس الدولة الألمانى.

A spanning introduction to Islam with a particular focus on Suffism. I found that this was intended at a well versed academic audience and I would have personally benefited from a glossary.

Written in 1992, before the tragic events of 9/11, Anemarie Schimmel's Islam concisely and beautifully describes the core tenants, history and theological flowering of the Islamic religious tradition through out its history. The book's value comes from its insightful and honest reflections on this world religion and it’s place in world history before current political and historical events had taken place, providing an unadulterated examination of Islam’s complex and multifaceted history.

I had used this book in a class back in the day and felt inclined to read through it again to see if it can be recommended to others as an introductory book. It is an informative book but I don't think it is good on its own for people who have no prior knowledge of Islam.

This book filled in a lot of blank that I had about the life of Muhammad, how Islamic religious texts are organized and the Shia/Sunni division. Very basic and decently written.

Good intro to Islam. However, the brevity of this volume means that descriptions and analyses of complex ideological and political factions within Islam are sacrificed into brief paragraphs.

Die Religion des Islam von Annemarie Schimmel eignet sich grundsätzlich gut als Einführung in die Grundlagen des Islam und vermittelt fundiertes Wissen aus religionswissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Ich habe das Buch von der Landeszentrale für politische Bildung erhalten, um mir ein solides Grundwissen anzueignen - diesem Anspruch wird es teilweise gerecht.
Allerdings sind einige Passagen sehr ausführlich und detailreich, was für einen ersten Überblick eher überfordernd ist. Zudem bleibt mir die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit unterschiedlichen Auffassungen und problematischen Aspekten des Islam insgesamt zu zurückhaltend. Das Buch beschreibt viel, hinterfragt aber vergleichsweise wenig.
Insgesamt ein kenntnisreiches Werk, das sich eher für vertiefte Beschäftigung als für eine kompakte, kritisch reflektierte Einführung eignet.

Mir hat es gut gefallen. Zeitweise fand ich die Überblicke über die historische Entwicklung und Strömungen etwas schnell zusammengefasst, so dass man sich die einzelnen Aspekte nicht mehr so gut gemerkt hat. Ansonsten hat mir das Buch einen guten theologisch-wissenschaftlichen Einblick in die Religion des Islam vermittelt. Ich kann es empfehlen! (Ich hatte eine etwas frühere Auflage)

كتاب عظيم يستعرض في أجزاء منه تاريخ المستشرقين الإيجابي البناء ويستكمل بمنهج موضوعي معتاد من كاتبته الرائعة الراحلة آنا ماري شيمل الحديث عن الإسلام وتاريخه ونبيه وفقهه وصوفيته
وذلك في اختصار واف مركز بديع سهل يسير لايستطيعه إلا واسع إطلاع موسوعي المعرفة.
هو بحق كتاب جدير بالإطلاع.
