When I was a second year high school German student, I struggled mightily to slog through "Die verschwundene Miniatur" as part of the required curriculum. Now some 50 years later, I got around to reading the English translation and actually enjoyed it! "The Missing Minature" is a light adventure romance with a fair amount of humor and wordplay (most of which went totally over my head when I was in high school).

Kindly, old master butcher, Oscar Külz, has taken "French leave" from his family and

This frothy, fun period-piece has all the elements of To Catch a Thief and I Love Lucy in a book. Kastner's tone is light and amusing throughout. Even the car-chase scenes, requisite bad guys, and mystery within a mystery was never dark or disturbing. Madcap romp.

Erich Kästner's The Missing Miniature
or The Adventures of A Sensitive Butcher

by tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE - January 4, 2012

I came to the writings of Kästner b/c I'm researching material to use for a sampling movie I'm working on called Robopaths about the relationship between conformity & scapegoating, megalomainiacs & genocide, etc.. It was probably while witnessing the excellent The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl" movie by Ray Müller (1993) that I saw
