This is an excellent book on China's booming megacities, focusing on the west of the country. Because its authors are an architect and a journalist, the book gives a somewhat different view of the matter than most literature on this subject. The authors have interviewed people involved in building China's cities like planners, architects, and city councillors, but also inhabitants of new compounds, peasants whose land was taken to build highrises, and the people who live on the building sites. This is an outstanding book on 13 megacities that are currently rising in Central and Western China, most of which are unknown in Europe. Every city has been given its own chapter and focuses on a special topic, such as the position of migrant workers, the 'reconstruction' of heritage, environmental issues, the culture scene, the housing market, and so on.
