To be blunt, Iris dislikes her new baby sister. Will her friend Walter be able to help?

Amazingly, to some extent, her best friend does help. For example:

"Baby Rose hurts my ears." said Iris.

"Hmmm. I have an idea," said Walter.

"I'll be right back."

Walter was back in no time.

"Here, Iris, try these earmuffs," he said....

Now Baby Rose sounded far away.

FIVE STARS for a simple yet satisfying story, at Level 3 for early readers.

Typical of author Elissa Haden Guest, the dialog and plot strike me as an excellent match for the more developed understanding of an older child. Iris and Walter think, speak, and act with more sophistication than typical picture book characters.

Of course, as the superb writer Guest is, she pulls this off with apparent spontaneity and effortlessnes. Refreshing!

Iris and Walter and Baby Rose is a great story about the ups and downs of becoming a big sibling. The book is an easy to read and the illustrations are big, which makes it a good first chapter book.

Iris as she learns of the impending birth of a new sibling, has a negative reaction to the new baby, enjoys a day of individual attention with her grandfather, and eventually enjoys her role as a big sister.

This easy reader series uses Iris's and Walter's friendship to tackle everyday issues experienced by children, both acknowledging the small struggles that have big impacts and reassuring young readers.

I thought that this book was very sweet and easy to relate to. Having four younger sisters, I can understand Walters excitement and frustration with having a new sibling. I like that the book was very real and admitted that although babies are cute, they are not always easy to take care of. The book shows that siblings do not always have to get along but they will always share a special kind of love.
This book would be a good read aloud when discussing the elements of a family or different types of families. Many children will be able to relate to Walter, or if they are the youngest they can get a better idea how their older siblings may have felt. This book would start a great discussion about siblings and students could share their own stories.
This would be a good independent read for someone with a new sibling, or with an expectant mother. They would relate to Walter and find humor in the story. It would also teach them a good lesson about sibling love and help them realize that the screaming and crying will not last forever.
This book could be used to teach character development. They could discuss how Walter's feelings change throughout the story. They could also discuss how baby Rose changes as she grows up.
This is a good transitional book. It introduces new words, phrases, and dialect. It also had short chapters. I think that this would be a good book for a student that is starting to become better at reading and enjoys it.

This is a sweet story that highlights the joys and troubles of a new baby in the house. Iris is excited for her new sister Rose to arrive, but doesn't expect her to be so loud and fussy. The book has short chapters and big font, so it's perfect for children who are just beginning to read chapter books. And it can also help parents prepare children for an impending sibling or to help them adjust to additions to the family. Overall, I thought this was an entertaining story and we enjoyed reading it together.

We've read a couple of the books in the Iris and Walter series and we've enjoyed reading them together. We will certainly look for more at our local library.

This story was about getting new family members. It is important when you get told you are going to be getting a new sibling and then you lose all of your parents attention. In this book, that happened to Iris. She was getting a new sister and baby Rose took up all of the time from her parents. Iris's parents had no idea how much they weren't spending with Iris until she went out of the house with her grandpa for the day to ride some rollercoasters. She came back and got to have an evening with her parents that was well deserved. It is important to not forget about other loved ones when somebody new shows up. You want to try and distribute your love equally.

This is very well done story exploring sibling rivalry. Although, personally I don't like it as much as the others, it might well be a very necessary one to read to young children.
