Here is an excellent little book of amazing photographs of London from the 1800s to the present day. It's interesting to see how much, or how little, some of the city has changed. There are also some nice references to London in films & books, as well as photographs of famous people including Charlotte Rampling & The Rolling Stones.
One of my favourites is a great picture of Battersea Fun Fair (sadly now no longer there) where I used to go to when I lived in London as a child. I have finished reading this book just a few days before my family & I visit this wonderful city again & no amount of terrorist atrocities will ever stop us going.

“London is hard to work out, but very easy to love.”
От зимното намаление на „Taschen” си подарих чудесни албуми на половин цена, като в раздел градове си избрах Лондон, защото…ами, град като Лондон никога не може да бъде обходен, преживян и опознат докрай, а албумът със снимки и текст едновременно образова и съхранява спомена от живото преживяване. Направен е безупречно, голям формат, с твърди корици, отлични фотографии и тежест, която прави невъзможно повдигането му с една ръка.
Римляни, саксонци, викинги и нормани са първите завоеватели на това, което ще стане известно като Лондон. Но архитектурно, градът е творение на викторианците. Големият пожар от 1666 г. разчиства Средновековен Лондон и останките от чумната епидемия, за да се превърне в гигантска строителна площадка през 19 век. От този периоди са и знаковите Royal Albert Hall, Royal Opera House, British Museum, Palace of Westminster, Big Ben, алеи и булеварди като Embankment, Charing Cross Road, Shaftesbury Road, легендарните гари Euston, Paddington, St. Pancras и разбира се – Метрото!
Една от отличителните черти в развитието на града е тоталната липса на контрол и централизирано управление – всичко се развива непланирано, стихийно, на парче – голямата разлика в сравнение с Париж от ерата на Наполеон III и архитект Осман, които проектират прецизно и в детайл големите булеварди, които познаваме днес.
От 19 век нататък Лондон концентрира в себе си всичко, което може да предложи един световен град – всяко възможно забавление, стока и услуга, но и потресаващи мизерия и мръсотия. Едуардианският и джорджианският период не добавят кой знае колко към викторианския устрем, но не можем да пропуснем няколко модерни градски феномена като кината, универсалните магазини (Selfridges), BBC и невероятната литературна сцена.
Макар че Блицът дава героична легитимност на града, Първата световна война също оставя трагичен отпечатък – стотици загиват под бомбите от цепелините. Но, разбира се, Втората световна война променя всичко. Градът е съсипан, населението – уморено и с изопнати нерви от оскъдните дажби и сигналите за противовъздушна тревога, но въпреки това, бавно, много бавно, идва на себе си.
Чак след средата на 50-те Лондон става буквално едно по-ведро място, заради успешната борба със смога, но най-вече заради появата на първите субкултури и призивите за повече социално равноправие. Градът става по-пъстър етнически и още по-богат на чешити. Лондон е музика, мода и повече отвсякога трепти на честотите на хедонизма. Партито приключва с терора на ИРА и епохата на тачъризма, за да се поднови отново през 90-те, когато брит попът започва шествието си по света. Оттогава датира и първото увлечение на моя милост по Града.
Днес, много повече отпреди, дори в сравнение с жестоките времена на детския труд във фабриките, Лондон е синоним на раздут имотен балон, притегателно място за мръсните пари на олигарси и шейхове, кръвожадна конкуренция, която принуждава щастливеца, намерил прилична офис работа, да бъхти по 16 часа на ден и безумен консумеризъм. Но дори и неговите жертви не отричат, че е велик.

An absolute wonderful love letter to the city I was born in.
This book is choc-a-bloc full of gorgeous pictures and insights. An exceptional addition to my London book collection. I was stalking this book for some time and held off because of price, but it's totally worth it!

Wir schreiben das Jahr 2012 und eine Stadt ist im Olympiajahr in aller Munde: London, eine der berühmtesten Hauptstädte Europas. Mit dem Bildband "London - Portrait of a city" hat der Verlag TASCHEN - der im übrigen ein exquisites Programm in dieser Richtung führt - wieder ein Meisterwerk geschaffen. Der über 4 kg schwere und über 500 Seiten starke Prachtband besitzt einen attraktiven, matten Einband, der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart vereint. Auf der Rückseite ein schwarzweiß-Foto aus dem Jahre 1937, auf der Vorderseite eine junge, modische Dame vor einem vorbeifahrenden Doppeldecker-Bus als Begriff des Swinging London der 60er. Gleich beim Aufschlagen entdeckt der Leser eine historische Karte, die "Geburtsurkunde" von London. Gehen wir nun auf Entdeckungsreise in eine Kulturstadt:
Im Innenteil werden die verschiedene Epochen mit kurzen Einleitungstexten in drei Sprachen vorgestellt und in Bildern aus weltweiten Archiven dokumentiert, viele waren davor noch unveröffentlicht. Der Zeitrahmen erstreckt sich vom viktorianischen Zeitalter bis heute. Kaum bekannte historische Aufnahmen haben die Atemzüge der Geschichte angehalten. Wonderful! What a book - the pictures are superb, making it the perfect coffee table book. It's broken into 5 sections:
1. 1817-1901 "The Monster City"
2. 1902-1938 "Modern Times"
3. 1939-1959 "The Consequences of War"
4. 1960-1981 "The Party and the Morning After"
5. 1982-present "New Perspectives"
London really was the first "monster city" and rich with history. One of my favorite cities in the world.
Unfortunately I had to deduct 2 stars because the authors thought it would be funny to write half the book in English, half in French, and half in German, so I only understand about 20% of it. And I refuse to type all of the German and French parts into google translate, it would take months!.
Idiots!
