A hilarious, irresistible romcom from the author of CONFESSIONS OF A FORTY-SOMETHING F##K UP!

Delilah does none of the above. Instead, she packs her bags and heads to London in search of a new life - and a new man. Only she meets Charlie , the sexy media mogul, and Sam , best friend and confidante.

This is not a review as much as it's a warning. There will also be spoilers, so don't read anything below the spoiler break, if you haven't read the book. At least not if you plan to read it...
The short-short version of my review is this: Sexist, agist, racist, body- and slutshaming book about a sociapathic chick who couldn't be bothered to think about anybody but hersef, but has a Sad Backstory, as if that excuses her rotten behaviour. Chick is Very Pretty (which we are repeatedly shown) and has friends who are there for the punchlines. She also has a gaggle of men to choose from in true chicklit manner. Oh, and there is the pipeline dream... Of course. I wouldn't read this. Or even give it away to your enemies. However, I have a feeling it'd burn nicely, doused with combustible liquids.
Then again, that's just me, and apparently plenty of people like the book. They can have mine. Unless it's already burned.
I always enjoy discovering new authors on my wife’s side of the bookcase, although as her tastes tend to lean towards chick-lit, it’s not always an entirely pleasurable experience, particularly as the genre itself tends to be very cliched. But every author is different, so it’s only fair to give them a fair chance.
Sadly, “What’s New, Pussycat” falls into most of the genre clichés going. Right from the start, a book titled after a Tom Jones song that features a lead character called Delilah doesn’t exactly smack of originality. Sadly, things don’t really improve greatly from this point, as Delilah has hit a point where she can’t take life in Bradford with her boyfriend of 10 years any more, when she bumps into film maker Charlie Mendes in A&E, who suggests she looks him up if she’s ever in London.
Predictably, Delilah heads almost immediately for London and starts looking for him, hampered slightly by losing Charlie’s business card. She also bumps into a guy in a café, Sam, who not only falls for Delilah, but introduces her to his friend Vivienne, a larger than life character who invites Delilah into her home. Delilah sees Vivienne as a new friend, but also sees Sam the same way, much to his disappointment. Sam looks to find a way to change the way Delilah feels about him, whilst she is hunting to find what she had lost with her boyfriend with Charlie. As is so often the case with two men fighting over the same woman in a chick-lit novel, they are known to each other and have a bit of history, which means they don’t get along.
The book moves along reasonably well, as it’s quite simply written and events pass by quickly. Which comes as something of a relief, as there is very little to enjoy here. There is precious little to like about any of the characters and whilst they are all distinctive enough that they don’t get mixed up with each other, they are also wholly one-dimensional and the lead character has nothing in the way of redeeming features. This makes it hard to want her to do well, as her actions are largely selfish and her outlook entirely inward looking, with little feeling for those around her other than as tools to get her what she wants, so the outcome of her search for love became irrelevant to me as I couldn’t bring myself to care about her.
The same was true of the other characters, as there was nothing that the average person could relate to in any of them. Vivienne is best described as quirky, in both dress and sexual habits and lives a life supported by a trust fund which gives her money and time to indulge in both. This at least is an improvement over many chick-lit characters who supposedly have jobs, but still have lots of spare time and money outside their apparent occupations, so the upfront nature of her diversions was welcome, but they were so out of the ordinary that they didn’t do anything to endear the character to me and the same was the case for the rich, womanising Charlie with his expensive cars and flats and his legion of hangers on, which again many of us in less glamorous occupations cannot relate to.
It’s just as well the book does fall for most of the genre clichés, as when the book tries to veer away from them, it quickly heads towards the ridiculous. Vivienne is a prime example of this, as is the ridiculous meet-cute between Delilah and Charlie and it’s telling that the ridiculous decision to move to London to chase a guy you’ve only spoken to once seems like one of the more sensible pieces of plotting by the time you reach the entirely unbelievable ending via more suspensions of disbelief than the Forth Road Bridge. This is a book that veers from the cliched to the ridiculous without ever getting anywhere near sublime. Whilst much in the chick-lit genre is full of clichés, many such novels do offer some redeeming features, but there are none to be found here.
I've read a couple of books by Alexandra Potter and absolutely loved them, but this book was the biggest disappoint.
It was dull, full of cliches, and just not fun to read. I really had to drag myself through the book.
I have finished it, but it didn't get better.
Delilah has u dull boyfriend, breaks up with after meeting some hot TV-guy and moves to London where she hopes to meet him again. She does after a while and after their second date he asks her to move in with him (I mean: how unreal can you get?), and off course she says yes. But unfortunately Charlie is one big disappointment after like three weeks. And then she cheats with a friend who, off course, is in love with Delilah. She runs off the next morning to Charlie, because she feels so guilty. And than everything dawns on her: she doesn't like Charlie, she likes Sam, she doesn't want to shop all day, but to attend a designcollege, off course she applies to late and she is rejected. But then everything turns out fine, Sam comes back to her, her rejection is turned into accepted and so and so on.
I don't mind some cliches in a book, but it was also badly written.
I read somewhere this is Potters first book, but couldn't find anywhere why it is only published last year.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Predictable plot, unlikable heroine with stereotypical dashing media boyfriend, down-to-earth male friend who has a crush on her, crazy BFF and same old misunderstandings that are meant to drive the plot. It was such a simple plot that I found myself rolling my eyes at the characters' presumptions and actions.
First off, there was absolutely no cat in the story, which now begs the question, “What was the title all about?”. But of course, it had a reason for being, ridiculous as it may be that it was entitled after a Tom Jones song. It only went downhill from there, what with a heroine named Delilah (yet after another Tom Jones song), and the worst possible naïveté behind her decision to go to London to chase a guy she met, dreaming up a happily ever after. Then you get introduced to the shallowness of her friend, Vivienne, who was all about sex and money. There would have been some redemption for the friend had she, earlier into the story, gone out in search for love. But of course, the redemption had to come at the tail end. Then there is Sam, a lovesick and straight as an arrow guy, pining for unrequited love, and Charlie, the object of Delilah’s affection who turned out to be the biggest jerk.
Alexandra Potter is one of my go to authors when I need something light and lovey-dovey (usually after reading heavy dramas). I was sorely disappointed though. It had nothing of the giggly punch “Me and Mr. Darcy” packed. The plot was such a cliche—— and while there are a number of frilled up cliches, that have successfully entertained readers, this unfortunately, was not one of them. To be fair, this was Alexandra Potter’s debut novel, and therefore, it was still very rough around the edges. Fortuitously enough, I have read some of her more recent work, and they have been relatively good, so I could still say that she will continue to be a go to writer. Had I read this first, I would not have gone on to her other books. So for now, I will just chalk this up to the error part of the trial and error that come with choosing books to read and put it back on my shelf, without a second glance.
After reading it, I realized that nowadays, we can’t even tell whether the things we want in life are truly our own desires or just products of other people’s preferences. Not all the realizations about what we want to achieve are genuinely ours, after all. Sometimes, they’re intentional — shaped by society’s standards.
That’s why we often crave certain things — to experience them, to have them in our own hands — just so we can be seen, just so we can fit in. But the real question is: Is that really what we want? Is that what we truly crave deep within us? Would we even feel satisfied if we finally got it?
Maybe not. Maybe we want it only because we long for praise and validation from others. Maybe the lifestyle we’ve always dreamed of isn’t really what we want. Maybe we only wanted that kind of setup because society labeled it as a “successful” and “lavish lifestyle” — something everyone is expected to chase.
I was wavering between I don't like it and it was meh to ok.
It was sorta like that. The heroine is OK if she wasn't such a user. I don't know. I feel like there is nothing likable about her and why she seems to attract the attention of the rich and wealthy / sweet baffles me. Aside from her trauma in life which let's face it, many many other people have in life, there is nothing that 'shines' in her.
Which makes reading this book kind of a drag. Also. I am disappointed there is no cat. Why you mention pussycat but no pussies ( not the pervy kind) at all in the book? WHY???
This book opens up with an interesting plot - meeting two cute and eligible new men when moving to a new place. Who would she choose? And I say interesting because initially both guys appear decent so the reader couldn't really guess who is the obvious person the herione is gonna end up with. But yes halfway through you could pretty much guess the ending. And I wish there were more details between Delilah and Sam. Loved the ending!
Hlavni hrdinka byla v pohode, nijak zvlast me netocila, humor zadny a dej dost telenoveloidni.
Well The story is common, that girl who wanted a major change and face the new world with it's ups and downs. I love the London lifestyle so I enjoyed it when she moved. Sometimes It was boring and I kinda skipped parts because of the specific details about not so important characters.
I really enjoyed this book! It was a feel-good read, with some drama and laughter thrown in! The characters were great and written really well. Vivienne was hilarious! The book was brilliant. The story was great, and it had me hooked! I really do enjoy Alexandra's books and highly recommend them.
My favourite teenage read. Fun, relatable and cute. I loved the main character, who was muddling her way through life and grief, but having fun while doing it. Cute, sexy, fun.
Just your casual, cliche rom-com from around the 00's. it's a fun, simple, feel-good book, but yeah, a lot of clichés. It's predictable, but we all need an easy fun book sometimes
i felt this a bizarre story, and very far fetched. it is a light read with of course, the happy ending.
When Deliah is proposed too, she realises this is not what she wants. After a trip to hospital to remove said ring, she meets Charlie, though only for a few moments, she decides to pack her bags and head to London, with the dream.of finding and moving in with Charlie.
I found the whole premise of the story so far fetched, and the character herself wasn't particularly likeable. However a light, easy read with some.laughs along the way.
Alexandra Potter je prostě novou mistryní v romantických románcích a já ji budu vždy velmi ráda bránit a doporučovat svým kamarádkám.
Of wacht!
Another fabulous, fresh, fast read from Alexandra potter. I was a little wary of reading this when I found out it was actually this author’s first novel. Having read most of her other, more recent, novels I was cautious in case this didn’t live up to the usual high standard that she had set in my reading expectations, however I was not disappointed!
Delilah does what so many of us have dreamed of doing, packs her back and runs off to the big city leaving her small town life and love behind. Now I am biased as I too have run off to London from Yorkshire, and therefore this added a whole other element to the book for me. The reason the reader can identify with the character and her storyline so much is because she literally starts off with nothing. She has nowhere to live, knows no-one, the only connection she has when she heads off to the big smoke is a business card from Charlie who she met in A & E before she ran away.
In Alexandra Potter’s usual mix of magic, mysticism and romance, good things start happening for Delilah and it was excellent fun living this out with our heroine! This was a really easy read, a total page tuner and had a satisfying ending with happiness and a twist as well. I think that even if you weren’t a fan of Potter before, you could pick this book up and fall in love with this author, very apt considering the fact that it is her first novel. I can totally recommend this novel, whether you are a Tom Jones Fan or not!
Ok, so 3.5 stars! Cos 3 seems too little and 4 is too much;)
I have always enjoyed Alexandra Potter's books, they're always cheery and humorous! It seems that a number of her books have this magical element to them (I didn't mean all Twinkle bell and Disney here!) but this one is obviously lacking, which I wish it wasn't.
At around 50% of the book, I was like, ok, I can predict the ending, but Delilah, girl, why must you be such a stubborn B****??! That's the "hardest time" to get through.... It's kinda entertaining to see how Charlie screw her up and act like a jerk hahahahaha
Vivienne, on the other hand, is one of my fav character of all time! She's absolutely cra-cra!!! Silly, straightforward, beautiful, sexy and sooooo cool! What's not to love about this girl?!
As for the Sam, I don't really have anything to say! Just this you-wish-you-would-meet-someday-in-real-life kind of guy who happens to be perfect and bold lol
Bottom line: read it when you're free. Takes off some stress after work:)
This book uses the usual plot that is used in all of Potter's books. Woman With Financial Struggles that somehow manages to live in an expensive big city (NYC or London). She's with Nice But Boring Guy, but his attention seems to have drifted, and she starts to doubt their relationship. Enter Strange Supernatural Happening that changes everything. But, don't worry, she has Curvy Fashionista BFF and New Love Interest at her side. Despite trying to hide her feelings for New Love Interest, for some reason she dumps Nice But Boring Guy and New Love Interest gets the girl in the end. Aw.
So, clearly this isn't a book to stimulate your braincells and get yourself excited over questions of morality. But as someone who has read all of Potter's books (yes, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM), I think I'm inclined to say that they're damn good books to read by the beach or pool.
Prakticky bez prostriedkov a v tazkej realite. Tu jej pomozu Sam a bohemka Vivienne a Delila spoznava Londyn. Vzlety a pady a zakoncenie slnieckovym zaverom.
Bohuzial, jemne mi to dokonca pripominalo Erskinovej styl (bez psycho-casti)... este ze som od Potterovej predtym citala inu knihu, ovela lepsiu. Inak by som po nej uz nesiahla.
I had high expectations of Alexandra Potter as the campaign accompanying the release of her books in the Czech Republic had been massive. I expected something new and fresh and different from usual chick lit. What I got was EXACTLY the usual chick lit. As soon as all of the main characters were on the scene I didn't have the slightest doubt how it would end--that is, which guy Delilah would end up with. For some reason, she couldn't see it for about 300 pages.
There is nothing special about the plot.....It's your typical girl leaves boy to follow man of her dreams, girl meets new boy best friend and falls in love with man of her dreams, realizes later on that man of her dreams is not really for her and falls in love with best friend. I just love how Alexandra Potter makes the story still interesting and funny despite the overused plot. This was a fast, easy and fun read with a few lessons here and there.
well this has been a rather difficult reads. story was far fetched. how likely is it someone like her will just uproot herself to chase a dream in the form of Charles mendes? a waitress without much education and stuck in the rug if life with a "secured" bf.
what is more far fetch is that at every turn lady luck seems to be with her.
despite everything this have been a good read as it's not gloomy.
