I love picture books with a simple text, beautiful illustrations and a positive message for young children. Ships in the Field wins 5 stars on all three areas.

One of the things I love most about this book is that it is a true story! Author Susanne Gervay has taken her childhood experiences and translated them into a charming, well-written picture book that every young child will enjoy listening to over and over again.

This is a great book to use as a springboard for discussion on diversity, war,

Highly reccomend this compassionate picture book. From a child's viewpoint, about the need to find family security , within a refugee world. Told with humour and delicate artwork.

A lovely written and illustrated Children's Picture book that takes us to the heart of Australia , where many families have immigrated after the war. Ships in the field follows one family in particular , a little girl , her parents and her toy dog Brownie. Her Papa was a farmer and her mother a teacher before the war struck forcing them to uproot and move to another country. The story talks about the girl's family and their nationality differences including speech. Hence the title "Ships in the ...more

Lovely. There's a lot of heart in this book.

I especially love it when Anna P gets out her really dark, scribbly pencil and goes for it! (The picture of the little girl looking out of the window on Sunday morning is divine.)
