Aš kaip ir dauguma tautiečių , nieko nežinojau ,apie Škotijoje gimusi Lietuvių imigrantų sūnų džentelmeną Džonį Ramenskį ( Jonas Ramanauskas, 1905-1972m). Ir iš tiesų labai liūdna , kad daugumai lietuvių šis išskirtinis ir įdomus žmogus nėra žinomas. Tad ačiū leidyklai kitos Knygos už tai , kad pristatė bėglį Džonį Ramenskį į Lietuvą. Ir aš naiviai tikiuosi , kad galų gale Džonis susilauks lietuvių dėmesio. Mes turėtume juo didžiuotis.
Škotijoje Džonis tapo legenda kaip seifų plėšikas (tyrėjai apžiūrėdavę seifą ir aplinką , tik ištardavo " Ir vėl Džonis") , kaip bėglys iš griežčiausiai saugomo Škotijos kalėjimo ( iš Piterhedo kalėjimo , kuris vadinamas Škotijos Alkatrasu pabėgo penkis kartus.), ir kaip komandosas ( apie elitinį komandosų būrį kuris stipriai prisidėjo prie karo eigos pasikeitimo, daug ką pasako faktas , kad jie atsisakydavo medalių , nes jiems didžiausias įvertinimas buvo jų sunkiai įgytos žaliosios beretės). Įspūdinga tai , kad Džonis sugebėjo papulti į elitinį komandosų būrį būdamas jau 38 metų ir penkerius metus praleidęs kalėjime ( tais laikais kalinius labai prastai maitino , jiems trūkdavo vitaminų ir mineralų). Džonis įsilaužė į Rommelio , Gioringo ir kitų Vokiečių karo vadų seifus , parūpino dokumentus kurie lėmė karo eigą. Būdavo nusprendžiama keblesnes užduotys palikti Ramenskiui.

Džonio narkotikas buvo adrenalinas ir pavojų jaudulys ir savo poreikį jis patenkindavo įsilauždamas į seifus , bėgdamas iš kalėjimų ir retomis laisvės akimirkomis lošdamas iš didelių sumų. Jį nuolat kamavo vidinė kova tarp noro gyventi sėsliai su savo šeima ir nuotykių troškimo.
Savo laiku jis buvo tikra įžymybė ir jo veidas nuolat mirgėjo laikraščiuose. Kas stipriai prisidėjo prie to , kad didžiąją gyvenimo dalį jis praleido kalėjimuose. ( iš viso kalėjo apie 40 metų). Kai kurie laikraščiai Ramenskiui prilipdė Robino Hudo etiketę dėl to , kad plėšdavo tik įmonių nuosavybę.
Džonio vaikystė prabėgo niūriuose ir dvokiančiuose Škotijos lūšnynuose , tėvo neteko anksti , mama buvo netekusi rankos , tad jis būdamas vos 11 metų jau vagiliavo. Iš dalies sąlygos ir aplinka prisidėjo prie to , kad jis pasuko nusikaltimų keliu. Kita vertus mano asmeninę nuomonę , net jeigu ir būtų užaugęs kitokioje aplinkoje Džonis vis tiek būtų tapęs seiflaužiu , bėgliu ir komandosu. Kaip Coelho pasakytų , tai buvo Džonio asmeninė legenda.
Kai būdamas vaiku skaičiau Bram Stoker "Drakula" vaizduotėje labai ryškiai mačiau , kaip grafas Drakula lipa pilies siena , dabar taip pat ryškiai mačiau Džonį lipanti kalėjimo siena.
Robert Jeffrey Džonio portretą tapė remdamasis dokumentais , laiškais, įvairių žmonių atsiminimais. Vis tik labai gaila , kad jeigu ne pora reto kvailumo žmonių turėtume galimybę perskaityt paties džentelmeno parašytą autobiografiją. Paties Džonio teigimu buvo parašęs 250000 žodžių. Deja bet visi užrašai buvo sudeginti.

Uhhhhhh. Mačiau komentarų apie tai, jog knyga atrodo kaip rašto darbas - negaliu su tuo nesutikti. Ištęsta iki negalėjimo, kartojasi, tas pats per tą patį 10 kartų. Vertimo klaidos taip pat bado akis. Nebuvo lengva skaityti, gal angliškai būtų lengviau.

Kiek gaila, nes pati asmenybė tikrai įdomi ir intriguojanti, bet nu nereeeeeikia tiek daug eterio ir 200+ puslapių. Būtų užtekę ir 100.

Bet šiaip, vertingiau pasiklausyti Proto Pemzos epizodų apie Ramenskį - bus tikrai geriau praleistas laikas.

Kiek per daug pilstymo iš tuščio į kiaurą ir vėl atgal. Mieliau matyčiau puslapius, užpildytus Džonio nuotraukomis ar tiesiog didesniais tarpais tarp eilučių... Labiau priminė bandymą rašto darbe surinkti tą reikalaujamą žodžių ar puslapių skaičių.
Asmenybė įdomi ir gyvenimo būta neeilinio, turiningo. Papasakoti tikrai buvo ką. Deja, autoriui nepavyko tvarkingai sujungti taškų, sudominti. Skaitydama vis svarsčiau, kaip knygą matytų skaitytojas, kuris su Ramenskiu pažintį pradeda būtent čia. Literatūrine prasme tikrai silpnas darbas. Galbūt prie bendro įspūdžio prisidėjo ir vertimas, kuriam taip pat turiu priekaištų. Ir klaidos badė akis...
Nėra pati prasčiausia skaityta knyga ever, bet tas 2 žvaigzdutes labiau uždirbo tema, ne išpildymas.

This is a rather sad story of a boy who grew up in poverty and who became one of the world’s extraordinary safe blowers, both as a criminal and a war hero Commando who qualified for the famous Green Beret.

Johnny Ramensky was driven by the need for danger, which some folks satisfy via adrenaline inducing sports. Instead, Johnny used his explosives knowledge gained down a mine to crack safes, which also produced the cash to feed his high stake gambling habit.

Although his 15 sentences totalled about 40 years in Scottish Jails, some of which had extremely harsh conditions *, Johnny wouldn’t accept the many kind offers of help to ‘go straight’ and couldn’t resist the temptation to blow another safe each time he was freed. He also held the record for escaping from prison five times, which he saw as a challenge; despite knowing each bid for freedom would be short lived and add to his sentence.

After completing a Jail sentence in 1942, he undertook rigorous training to become a Commando and worked behind enemy lines using his safe blowing experience to crack safes in premises of high ranking officials, to access secret information on WW2. During this period he seemed to get the adrenaline rush he needed without recourse to his criminal ways. However, on returning to civilian life, it was back to normal and more time in Jail.

It poses the question many have considered. What if this highly intelligent and skilful man had been born under different circumstances – might he have used his talents to lead a normal and prosperous life? The jury is still out on this (no pun intended).

I first became aware of Johnny Ramensky when I visited Peterhead prison whilst on holiday in Scotland. One of the cells has lots of material about his life and prison breaks.

After the tour I spotted this book in the gift shop but at the full price of £12.99, whilst I wanted to read it I decided to wait until I got back from holiday to source it cheaper. The next day whilst in Aberdeen I found the same book in an Oxfam bookshop for £2.99.

Result!

Anyway, I digress.

The book itself is an interesting read, however there's a fair bit of waffle that could be cut out. There's also a few occasions where the author appears to attempt to validate himself, as if to prove that he knows what he's talking about which just seems needless to say the least.

It's interesting to note the public perception of Johnny as he gets older, from war hero & around loveable rogue to "Isn't he too old to be doing all this now?"

In summary, a decent enough book, probably 30 pages too long.

I have tried twice to read this book, mainly because I remember my father telling me tales of Johnny Ramensky and also because they both came from the same Lanarkshire village. However, the amount of padding the author puts in makes the book impossible to enjoy. It reads at times like a Boys Own Annual with "jolly exciting tales", but ultimately fails to win this reader over. My dad's tales were much better.

I love a true crime story as well as reading history. I'd never heard of Johnny Ramensky, probably seeing as he is a local legend to his area in Europe. I found this an intriguing account of a man who couldn't bring himself to leave a life of crime. He is a war hero, which I find extremely honorable, and I also find it sad he couldn't find something non-criminal in his life to go straight. I can see why he is called Gentle Johnny, with even folk songs written about him. Well written and factual.

New Perspective

I’m not from Scotland but long ago my ancestors passed through. Recently I traveled to Scotland on business and is my habit when visiting new places I sought out information about my destination. I ran across the story of Gentle Johnny Ramensky and decided to read the book. The writing is not to my preferred style and it feels like the author sacrificed depth of character development and the storyline wanders. But I enjoyed learning more about Scotlands participation in WWII. It is a little odd that someone who was basically a petty thief with the exception of but a few years of military service would be lionized.

What a story, seemingly lost to history. A proper rogue like folk hero who went from criminal to war hero and back to the underworld once more. Unlike the vicious gang land figures of the time, Johnny is respected, not out of fear, but because of his character and his respect for the little guy. His exploits should be known to everyone in Scotland, his name kept in the minds of generations that followed but unlike men like the Krays, this is sadly not the case. A very easy to read account of an incredible life. Must read for any Glaswegian interested in the historical figures of their city.

Labai megstu ir net biskeli romantizuoju istorijas apie Jona Ramanauska, John Ramensky, John Ramsay, Gentle Johnny - u name him :))) nieko labai naujo nesuzinojau, nors buvo faina vel isijaust i ta kreizi gyvenimeli. NU BET KNYGA PARASYTA TRAGISKAI. 5/5 uz meile Johnniui, ir vos 2/5 isspaudziau uz sita mokyklos lygio tekstu kratini. Skauda sirdi :D

Unfortunately this book is very poorly written. War undoubtedly threw away the rulebook for some criminals, and Johnny Ramensky was one of the most interesting. Perhaps he will one day find a better author.

It's somewhere to start, if you want to read about Ramensky, but it's heavily padded, a bit repetitive, and full of the annoying idiosyncracies of books about war or the krays.
