With over 700 pages, this collection includes "Sticks," "Where the Summer Ends," "In the Pines"; in sum, all of Wagner's horror fiction.
This collection has a color cover by J.K. Potter and over ten full-page, full-color interior illustrations by Potter as well. The book is edited and introduced by Stephen Jones, has an additional introduction by Peter Straub, and a remembrance by David Drake. The introductions are profusely illustrated with pictures of Karl in both black & white and color.
Karl Edward Wagner (12 December 1945 – 13 October 1994) was an American writer, editor and publisher of horror, science fiction, and heroic fantasy, who was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and originally trained as a psychiatrist. His disillusionment with the medical profession can be seen in the stories "The Fourth Seal" and "Into Whose Hands". He described his world view as nihilistic, anarchistic and absurdist, and claimed, not entirely seriously, to be related to "an opera composer named Richard". Wagner also admired the cinema of Sam Peckinpah, stating "I worship the film The Wild Bunch".
All are Centipede Press editions, this one is just both books in a sleeve, fancier bindings, & signed - beyond my budget, especially since I bought a set for myself & my son, plus a third copy of 'Summer' that I sent to a friend (Janny?). They were also really expensive & I just wanted to read the stories. Jerad, the owner of Centipede Press, assured me that the content was otherwise the same.
If I ever do get a chance at a copy reasonably priced, I'd love to have it.
