Gibbin House by Carola Perla is one of those rare books where I fell in love with the story from the very first line. It is so rare to find a book with an opening line that truly hooks the reader but Gibbin House is one of those extraordinary gems. The first chapter had me so entranced in the story of Anka Pietraru that I turned back and read the Prologue. I never read the Prologue but with Gibbin House I simply couldn’t help myself. The Prologue in Gibbin House is a letter from Anka to a man ...more

This book will take you on a journey not only in time, but also through wonderful cities like Vienna and London, and the backwaters of the Banat. From dark cozy "stuben"in Vienna filled with art history majors and poets. To beautiful London in Gibbin House with it's recluse men all trying to understand their new and peculiar house mate. You will feel as if you are part of that era. It is emotional, funny, romantic, and such a joy to read. It is a wonderful story to take you away to far off ...more

Gibbin House by Carola Perla is one if my favorite historical novels. It surrounds a group if educated men rooming in a huge home in Europe around the World War era. I loved the old world setting and the way the housemates had a stiff / formal friendship of that time. I loved the historical details included. The story was heart wrenching in places, and beautifully played through friendship, rivalry, jealousy, kindness, war, secrets, & eventually love." ~ MoonShineArtSpot

“And I tell her about his description because I want her to know what I now know, which is that the place where the pepper grows is not a place to be afraid of…
I tell her: Mama, exile is not always the darkest corner of the earth. Sometimes it is lush and plentiful, sometimes it is full of life…”
