Behind the Painting is a work to read alongside Soseki's Kokoro. My first Thai novel (or rather novella) albeit in translation and glad to have encountered a work that i feel deserves to be more widely read in the English language. Hope that a major publishing house will pick up this work. Finally finished the three short stories that accompany this edition. Recommends it for: anyone who doesn't think that an old novel is lame
Recommended to Bookaholic by: more like, forced to read by: Kru Nok
Shelves: school-destined
Contrary to my initial expectation, I love this novel. The language is so happy sigh-worthy, the characters are complex, the world-building is exquisite..I like the ideas, beliefs, and philosophy presented by the author, especially those that are embodied by the two main characters who are complete opposites. Despite the ultimately tragic conclusion (that made me tear up..), I still relish the story.

My copy of this book got run over by the mail truck, which is kind of what I wished would happen to the protagonist by the end of this book, but the fact that it effected me so deeply makes me feel that it's a good book. The other stories in the back of the book were more to my liking, but Behind the Painting was not too bad, either.

I think this combination of a novella and three short stories is an excellent introduction to Thai society and culture.
