The Job

Alan Korkunc is a notorious Kurdish assassin who is perhaps not strong or mean enough to work in New York City. Known as the 'Black Stone' back in Istanbul, he has recently escaped from prison after being convicted of murdering a Turkish businessman. Now in a cockroach-infested Manhattan apartment, without his accustomed bespoke tailoring, he prepares for a new assignment against an old enemy of the Kurdish people. But his instructions are not to wipe out the big-wig himself, but his two little daughters and the lovely woman they call 'Mommy'. Although Alan doesn't understand English, or any other gibberish that turns the Big Apple - he thinks 'Mommy' is one of the prettiest names for a woman he has ever heard. As the infamously heartless killer makes his cool, controlled preparations, he has not reckoned on New York's bustling anonymity and its squirting jam donuts, nor on the distractions of an elderly neighbour who shares her tinned sardines with him in his lonely hours. A mix of satire, intrigue and odd-ball lethal suspense, THE JOB is a deft tale of light and shadows which hits unexpected targets of human emotion.

Irene Dische is an American writer, born and raised in the Washington Heights district of New York City.
She has studied Literature and Anthropology on the Harvard University. She was a freelance journalist (The New Yorker, The Nation). In the early 1980s, Dische moved to Berlin, Germany, and now she devides her time between Berlin and Rhinebeck, New York. A lot of her work is written in English, but often first published in German.

Viele ihrer Werke sind in englischer Sprache verfasst, aber zuerst in deutscher Sprache herausgegeben.

Die Autorin habe ich komplett aus dem Blick verloren. Das liegt daran dass ich den Job gelesen hab, als Dische aus irgendeinem Grund gerade als Must Read in Deutschland gehandelt wurde, wahrscheinlich wurde sie gerade von irgendeinem bekannten Literaturkritiker (wieder)entdeckt.
Aber ich hatte mit dem Buch Probleme. Ich bin nicht gut reingekommen, obwohl mich der Plot grundsätzlich interessiert hätte. Vielleicht war es die etwas flapsige Schreibweise mit der ich wenig anfangen konnte.

Eine eigenartig komische Geschichte über den kurdischen Killer Alan, der vom Knast in Istanbul nach New York flieht, um dort seinen letzten Job zu erledigen, bevor er ein freier Mann wird. Während sich im Laufe der Vorbereitung seine Weltanschauung langsam verändert, schließt er zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben eine Freundschaft, und zwar solche, die ihm man eher nicht zumuten würde. Freundschaften können lebensrettend sein, dies ist auch hier der Fall.

Diese nette, ans Absurde grenzende Geschichte hat sich die Zeit gelohnt. Neugierig auf die anderen Werke der Autorin hat sie mich aber nicht gemacht.

Just got my third copy of this book - I keep lending it to people and not getting it back! It's a wonderful tale of a stranger abroad in Manhatten who makes an unlikely bond with a nieghbour. Part culture clash, part low key thriller, with an unexpected but satisfying twist at the end...
